Patent Office Agrees To Check Into All
That Prior Art On The Eolas Patent
11/12/2003 01:35 PM
The latest in the Eolas patent saga is that someone at the Patent Office has finally agreed to review the patent based on stacks and stacks of prior art that people have been finding. Amazingly, the Patent Office appears to have responded quickly (though, they don't say how long it will take for a new decision on the patent) to the requests for a re-examination of the patent. There's a quote from the USPTO's deputy commissioner for patent examination policy saying that this was an "extraordinary situation" which necessitated the quick response. The problem with this statement is that it's not an extraordinary situation. In fact, it's an increasingly common situation, where silly patents are getting the stamp of approval every day - and then used to hold other companies up for extortion, rather than for encouraging innovation.

NEC JVC has three new high-definition plasma televisions coming out - two 42-inch models and a 50-inch. One of the 42-inchers, the GD-V422PCE, produces over a billion colors, which should make for a very nice, rich looking picture. They all are nice, of course, as far as plasma goes, plus each is capable of displaying a regular XGA source (1,024 by 760 pixels) if you wanted to use them as a giant monitor. Prices aren't announced yet, but I'd expect something in the $6,000 - 7,000 range for the 42-inch models, and way more than that for the 50.

Silly Patent Of The Day: Adobe Hit With
Lawsuit Over Hyperlink Patent
07/08/2004 05:05 PM
I think it's about time we came up with a new topic/icon for stupid patents. There are just so many of them these days. The latest is that Adobe, who is no stranger to abusing intellectual property rules, is now being hit with a patent over their PDF technology. The patent is for a method of extracting network information via hyperlinks. Reading through the patent, they're basically describing a system for clicking on a hyperlinking and having the system not only download the page in question, but all locally related pages linked from that page as well. Perhaps a useful system, but it seems like this sort of technology was around well before the patent was granted, and it's unclear what it has to do with PDF files.

I'm not really in a bad mood - I'm just blowing off steam. We've got morons up the wazoo crowding the streets of San Francisco to protest the war. It took me well over an hour to get to work this morning - when it normally takes ten minutes. I don't mind peaceful demonstrations - but the moment you get in my way, I get a little pissy. You don't like what we're doing in Iraq? Fine, it's your right as an American citizen to share your feelings with the public. But how is keeping me from my morning coffee going to change anything?! Why don't you get a Web site - like a normal person? Blog it, damn you. Just don't stand in between me and my Peet's....

WHO image rattles plasma TV owner: Not what you want out of an expensive TV.

[Bryant] Ayala of Bondurant [Iowa] said he noticed Monday night that the blue frame used by WHO-TV to warn viewers about winter weather closings appeared to have been burned into his recently purchased plasma screen.

A Web site called PlasmaTVBuyingGuide.com said that images can be burned into plasma TV screens, particularly when the image is displayed for more than a few minutes at a time. The problem is more common during the first 200 hours of use, according to the site.

Remember that this is why screensavers moved around originally — because of the mythical "burn in." Supposedly this problem was resolved for CRTs a long time ago, but I guess plasmas are still in their infancy.

Referencing Minority Report far too many times, the reviewer tells us that Panasonic had developed some very specific weather tracking and aerial navigation software to take advantage of the touch capabilities. The great part is that the infrared unit is an independent frame around the television and Panasonic also makes a 42" and 50" model, so retrofitting your existing Plasma shouldn't be too difficult. It's USB-powered and accurate up to 2x2 millimeters. No word on price or availability, but a quick Google search pulled up a German Lycos catalog page with a price of about $5,150 for the 50" model.

Sharp Releases 3D Flat Panel (Finally)

Sharp Releases 3D Flat Panel (Finally) 08/10/2004 08:48 AM

ll-151-3d.jpg imageSharp has finally released its 3D flat-panel LCD monitor, a 15-inch version creatively dubbed the "LL-151-3D." Sharp, Sony, and other display manufacturers worked to develop a standard for the 3D monitors, though, which means that investing in the $1,500 unit means it should continue to work with future products for a while. While the technology is intended primarily for gamers, Sharp hopes to also sell units to scientists and bathtub chemists who have a need to view molecular structures and the like in 3D.

No special equipment is required to see the 3D images, but users do have to sit directly in front of the screen to get the full effect. (Thanks, Teemu!)

I'm in the market for a new flat-panel monitor, so Trusted Reviews' eight-way 20- and 21-inch flat-panel comparison was right up my alley -- at least until I realized it was, like, 1902913 pages long. So unless you're into the total nitty gritty of flat-panel testing, ignore all their hard work and skip to the end, where they offer up three good-looking and good value monitors for your consideration. Samsung and Viewsonic I sort of expected to see on there, but the third company I'd never even heard of.
