AP - A strain of bird flu that scientists fear could lead to a worldwide pandemic in humans is becoming more infectious to mammals. Millions of chickens and other fowl have had to be slaughtered in Asia — and thousands more have been killed in the United States and elsewhere — to stem outbreaks of avian flu in recent years. Scientists say it is only a matter of time before the virus adapts to spread among humans.

On the train to Waterloo

On the train to Waterloo 06/06/2005 12:12 AM

So I'm working out in Wokingham - which is part of the Reading "The UK's Silicon Valley" area west of London. Our client - Visual Media - are teh folks who do Pluginz.com and JahShaka - which Doc wrote about two years ago.

They've had over 200k downloads of their open source high-end graphics/animation tool and we're designing a social network and media blogging DLA for them.

Today I meet with several other potential clients and (hopefully) continue to spread the DLA meme. When I get back - we'll have our other new client over in SF for a month of meetings and will be starting two other projects - which makes four simultaneous active projects, with our aSmallWorld project ramping down.

Whereever I go - the DLA pitch is warmly received and immediately put into the context of whoever I'm meeting with.

Now we get to show what this all has to do with microformats, new kinds of tools and integration, aggregation and customization - in general.

If everything continues - as is - I'll be posting for more 'Mini-Marcs' soon enough.

Figure Eight Train Racing

Figure Eight Train Racing 03/26/2005 09:53 PM

I stumbled across something on SpeedTV today that has to be seen to be believed: figure-eight train racing. Not real trains — three cars lashed together to act like a train.

The first car is the only powered car. Usually something big, old, and American — mid seventies Monte Carlos seemed quite popular. The driver of this car steers and works the throttle. The car has no brakes.

Attached to the back of the first car by chains and a tow bar is the middle car, which has nothing. No engine, no brakes, no driver. Just an empty shell.

Attached to the back of that by chains is the caboose. No engine, no steering, but it has brakes and a driver. God help him.

Now, take eight of these perversions of automotive theory and put them on a figure eight track. Seriously. Then race them for 10 laps.

The race I watched ended with no hits in the crossover, which surprised me. What's amazing is watching the caboose get whipped around like a rag doll. The rear driver is supposed to be able to put some tension on the train by using the brake, but I couldn't see any difference. Any quick steering movement up front got wildly exaggerated by the time it rippled back to the rear and that guy was just along for the ride.

I wish I had a picture to show you, but a few minutes of Googling turned up nothing. Half of me thinks the whole thing was just a nightmare.
