06/28/2004 09:46 AM
Automatic Duck on Monday released P ro Import C3, a timeline integration software tool for Mac OS X and Windows that enables users of Avid of Final Cut Pro-based editing systems to translate their editing timelines into Discreet's Combustion 3 compositing software. Pro Import C3 imports all media and clips, accounting for layer placement and digital media effects as well. As a result, Combustion users can then slip and trim shots without needing to go back to the editing software to export their edits again. Layer names are maintained as sequences are imported, collapsed layers and nested effects are turned into nested composites in Combustion, and media support includes Avid ABVB, Meridien, Xpress DV and Xpress Pro, Final Cut Pro DV, SD and HD. Pro Import C3 costs US$495.

Unlicensed Low Frequency Spectrum
06/03/2004 04:47 PM
Four admirable spectrum licensing wonks have started an advocacy site on low-frequency unlicensed wireless: Kevin Werbach, Andrew Odlyzko, David Isenberg, and Clay Shirky are a combined powerhouse of intellectual might and regulatory expertise. Their site promotes the notion of unshackling spectrum from outdated technical notions that restrict innovation. The FCC has become more and more amenable to these ideas, as it toys with rulemaking vastly different than anything that's come before. The site is funded by Microsoft. I had some back and forth with Werbach about what that means, and he has clarified the issue on their About page. Microsoft is funding their time to devote to the issue, but the editorial voice is independent. I know all of these gentlemen except Odlyzko, and can vouch that you wouldn't see the door hit their backside if there were a conflict of interest or an attempt to change their statements....

Among three new cell phones announced by the company on Thursday, Nokia introduced its new 7280 model, which features leather and mirror accents, a high-gloss finish and a sliding cover for the lens that offers VGA-quality snapshots. It can sync with your Mac via Bluetooth to transfer photos, songs, videos, ring tones and wallpapers back and forth. Its display supports 104 x 208 resolution and up to 65,536 colors, with the ability to stream video, and its Lithium Ion battery allows up to three hours of talk time and up to 240 hours of standby time. Bayesian spam rumination: when
word-frequency-histograms attack!

Bayesian spam rumination: when
word-frequency-histograms attack!
06/29/2004 10:40 AM
Ed Felten has posted an intriguing rumination on the possible failure modes of Bayesian spam-filtering -- filtering that uses word-frequency statistics to classify email as spam or ham. As Ed points out, Bayesian filters are trained by the spammers, who, by choosing the vocabulary of their messages carefully, can make messages containing certain words or phrases undeliverable on the Internet.
Now suppose a big spammer wanted to poison a particular word, so that messages containing that word would be (mis)classified as spam. The spammer could sprinkle the target word throughout the word salad in his outgoing spam messages. When users classified those messages as spam, the targeted word would develop a negative score in the users' Bayesian spam filters. Later, messages with the targeted word would likely be mistaken for spam.

This attack could even be carried out against a particular targeted user. By feeding that user a steady diet of spam (or pseudo-spam) containing the target word, a malicious person could build up a highly negative score for that word in the targeted user's filter.
