Software MacKiev on Friday released a free set of 48 Christmas- and New Year-themed templates for use with the developer's Print Shop software. The collection includes CD labels, greeting cards, postcards, online greetings and calendars decorated with a variety of images that range from traditional to the Mac-themed "Here's to the new cat in 2005," which adorns a photo of a tiger. The Print Shop is a US$49.95 application that comes with more than 6,000 templates for creating not only the types of print-outs found in the holiday collection but also VHS tape labels, banners, fax cover pages, pamphlets, newsletters and more. It can export and import projects in a variety of formats and supports 60 Avery label types. Mac OS X v10.1.5, a G3 350MHz processor, 192MB RAM (256MB recommended) and 150MB free hard drive space are required.

Software MacKiev on Friday released a free Holiday Greetings Collection with a Valentine's Day theme. For use with the company's The Print Shop software, the set features 48 templates that include a new project type, Gift Tags, in addition to printed and online greetings, postcards and more. The new Holiday Greetings Collection also offers CD label and jewel case insert templates that feature better integration with iTunes by importing artist names, track times and album or playlist titles, in addition to track titles. Current users can update The Print Shop to version 1.06 from within the software.

MacCentral received word Wednesday that at long last, Broderbund's The Print Shop Mac OS X Edition 1.0 has finally shipped to retailer's store shelves. It's also available for online sale. The completely reinvented Mac OS X-native version of Broderbund's popular consumer-oriented printing software was first unveiled to the public at last summer's Macworld CreativePro Conference & Expo in New York City by its developer, Software MacKiev. Macworld's editors awarded the software their Best of Show recognition for the product at that show.

This giant Ukrainian Easter Egg (pysanka) was built in 1975 in Vegreville, Canada by (then) Univ. Utah Computer Science Professor Ronald Resch. Interesting egg factoids can be found here--including that it swivels like a weather vane. Vegreville has an annual festival. More images of egg here. The Vegreville Pysanka was the first physical structure completely designed with computer-aided geometric modeling software. There is a good description here of the complex geometry involved. It's based on a technique (PDF) he developed and patented for folding a flat material (i.e. sheet metal) into flexible surfaces. Ronald Resch has had an interesting career.
