Most people are not aware of the fact that Perl has support for object-oriented programming. If you've used another object-oriented programming language such as Java or C++ or been exposed to object-orientation then object oriented programming in Perl is nothing like that. To do real useful object-oriented programming in Perl you only need to use three simple rules as put forth by Larry Wall in Object Oriented Perl.

Developer of Japanese P2P system
arrested

Developer of Japanese P2P system
arrested
05/10/2004 04:36 AM

Today, an associate professor at the most prestigious university in Japan, Tokyo University was arrested today for developing a tool that enables piracy. The program is a P2P system cally Winny. Previously two of the users had been arrested. I got a call from Asahi Shimbun (Japanese newspaper) today asking me for a comment for the morning news tomorrow. I hope the print it. I think it's an absolute disgrace to Japan. While the US is fighting in congress, Hollywood pushing to ban P2P and Boucher et al fighting for DMCRA, Japanese police go and arrest someone developing P2P software with a VERY sketchy case. The thing is, it's quite likely he will be found guilty.

I once served as an expert witness on the FLMASK case. FLMASK was a program that could be used to allow password protected scrambling of areas of an image so that porn sites could post pictures that passed the Japanese censors, but allowed users to unscramble them. The police were so upset that they cracked down on the hardcore porn sites with the argument that even with FLMASK'ed "clean" images, they would be deemed hardcore. The problem was, this left the developer of FLMASK free from claims that his software enabled anything illegal. So they busted him for LINKING to these porn sites that got busted as users of his software. The deemed linking to a porn site as the same as actually running a porn site. I was the chairman of Infoseek Japan at the time so I obviously had a lot to say about that. The amazing thing is... after overwhelming evidence of the stupidity of the allegations, the guy was found guilty.

Anyway, Japan is yet again leading the world in stupid Internet policing.

Japanese File Sharing System Creator
Arrested For Copyright Violation

Japanese File Sharing System Creator
Arrested For Copyright Violation
05/10/2004 04:31 AM
For all the complaints we have about bad laws in the US, at least (so far) we've been able to keep from declaring file sharing software (on its own) illegal. That's not the case in Japan, where the creator of a supposedly anonymous file sharing system ha s been arrested for "abetting the violation of the Copyright Law." Apparently, the fact that such software has plenty of legitimate uses as well doesn't matter. Shouldn't they also be arresting the creators of just about any other technology that can be used to break the law? In this case, they say it made sense because they have evidence that two people used his file sharing program to download illegal files. I think there's plenty of evidence that computers have been used in crimes. They should be arresting everyone who created computers. Plus the internet is full of criminals these days - so the folks who started the internet clearly to be thrown in jail. Just think how many crimes have been committed by people in cars! A pen can be used for both forgeries and to stab someone. Someone ought to be locked up for that. The list is endless. Clearly, no technology at all should be created and anyone who created any technology deserves to be in jail.

I wanted to demonstrate the SpamBayes plug-in for the school, and I realized I ought to try the screen-capture feature of the free Windows Media Encoder 9. The results were stunning. I set up a new session, pointed it at Outlook's main window, and began encoding. Then I talked through a demonstration of SpamBayes' configuration manager, its Delete and Recover toolbar buttons, and my techniques for integrating SpamBayes with Outlook's filtering and foldering. Along the way I pointed with the cursor to items of interest, opened and closed dialog boxes, and drove the Outlook interface as I normally do.

The resulting six-minute video had the same format as my Outlook window, which happened to be about 750-by-620. The file came in at just under 3MB. I FTP'd it to my Website and, because I'd chosen the progressive-download option, playback was immediate. It was also perfectly readable and audible. Elapsed time from the moment I thought of trying this to the end of playback: about 25 minutes. Next time it'll take 10. Why don't more people do this? Because it wasn't this easy before. Now, it is. [Full story at InfoWorld.com]
I wanted to post that video here, but I'm afraid I can't because it reveals too much of the contents of my inbox. However, I'll definitely be using this technique in the future. One killer application, if you sit in on a lot of WebEx demos as I do, is the ability to record them, play them back, and publish excerpts from them. ...

DAPreview found some new hi-resolution shots of the upcoming iRiver PMC-100, the Microsoft-based Portable Media Center that is the cousin to the non-Microsoft PMP-120/140. It looks considerably different than the original, more slab-like mockup we'd shown you, but it does look a lot more practical to use. It also looks like it is probably just a remolded bit of plastic that fits over the same hardware that powers the PMP-1xx series players.

I still like the old design better, but I also know which one I'd rather hold in my hands for two hours at a time.
