Runner #464, 7 to go. 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

One week to go, then. By this time next Sunday, I'll be somewhere in the middle of the Sahara, in about 110 degrees, running the first leg of the Marathon des Sables. The next six days will see another six...

Why I'll never be a fast runner

Why I'll never be a fast runner 08/11/2004 10:24 AM
An interesting article in the New York Times yesterday examines Why Joggers Labor and Olympians Fly. Apparently elite atheletes (like we know from cyclist Lance Armstrong) possess physiological traits that "normal" people don't have, such as larger hearts. Exercise physiologists say there are three components to great running: A high VO2 max, the volume of oxygen an athlete can consume at maximum exertion; great running efficiency, a measurement of the energy used to run at a particular pace; and an ability to keep going at a high level of exertion for a long time, expressed as the percentage of VO2 max that can be sustained during a run. Some day I'd like to get my VO2 max measured. Meanwhile, my marathon training has been progressing quite well, or it was until yesterday when I was running in the woods, took my mind off the trail, and started thinking about the interval training I was going to do after I warmed up. Then I tripped on a root and went non-Olympian flying through the air, bonking my knee as I skidded along the pine needled floor of the forest. No interval training after that, just a slow jog back home and a day of icing the knee. I guess I'm still in the "Joggers Labor" phase of my running career.

a front runner

a front runner 01/28/2004 11:21 AM
So we have a front runner -- a great Senator with an extraordinary career of service. He's found the message -- a "positive" campaign "against special interests." (In the great tradition of Walt Disney creativity, it is a message that builds upon the culture around him. See, e.g. Edwards, Dean). And while I have no doubt the Senator would make a far better president than the current, I worry whether the message ("against special interests") will ring true with a man who has been in DC for so long. This was the part that came naturally to Dean, and even Edwards. When Edwards describes "the way Washington works," it's like a doctor describing the spread of a virus. But that will be a hard sell for this powerful, if consistently right, senator from Massachusetts. And as for fighting "special interests": As far as the copyright debate goes, the Senator seems to have heard only from the special interests. His technology discussion twice mentions copyright, only to urge even more IP extremism. And while there's a vague tilt to "WiFi", there doesn't seem to be anything else to signal the Senator has even seen the other side. E.g.
"...THR: The RIAA recently filed suit against several hundred file sharers. How far should copyright holders be allowed to go to protect their products? And do you think that file sharers should be held liable? Kerry: I think any kind of mass file sharing that goes beyond the normal college-dorm, room-to-room, person-to-person, friend-to-friend kind of sharing is a violation of the law. I believe in copyright. I think we would have complete disorder in the marketplace if you don't enforce copyright. Copyright is the way you create order out of chaos in the marketplace. Otherwise, you diminish the value of intellectual property and artistic property, and you wind up not enforcing the rules by which people are compensated for their work. I think the U.S. has been very lax in dealing with China and other countries on intellectual property regulations, and I have long argued that we ought to be enforcing those measures very, very strictly. Now, I have worked hard with the industry to try to find some ways to create an appropriate technology that allows people to share. The problem, obviously, in a digital world, is that one tap of a button on a Web site and you can transmit to millions of people a perfect copy. So I think we have to find a technological fix, and frankly, it has been economic self-interest that has prevented people at arriving at an appropriate compromise..."
I've never spoken to a Kerry-ite (except his wife whom I used to campaign with when I was chairman of the Teenage Republicans and she was married to the late-Senator Heinz). So I'd love to be proven wrong about this. Are there pointers to stuff that demonstrates a more charitable read?

Blade Runner Dualmode Concept

Blade Runner Dualmode Concept 08/02/2004 02:08 PM

br2_dualmode.jpg image

The Blade Runner Dualmode is a concept vehicle from UK firm Silvertip Design that aims to take out the middleman between tractor-trailers and conventional freight trains. Currently in 1/8th-scale working model, the Blade Runner can operate on normal highways, then easily switch to running on standard train rails, using a fifth-wheel to stay on the tracks but continuing to use the rubber tires on the rails for acceleration and braking. The concept as designed could haul over 105 passengers or 115 cubic meters of freight. Somehow I have a feeling this one won't see the light of day, but best of luck to them.

Seems like an awful lot of AOL news today... Despite AOL and Time Warner merging over three years ago, it seems that they just realized that maybe (just maybe) there's some synergy between AOL and Time Warner's Road Runner service. People have been asking for ages when they would work together, and the answer is apparently now (finally). AOL and Road Runner have announced a plan to team up for broadband. In exchange for having AOL offer up Road Runner connections, Time Warner will be offering a channel of AOL content on their website - which should interest about three or four people.

There are other external, rechargeable battery packs for the iPod -- and certainly ones that are better looking -- if anyone actually gets around to importing this one, it might be worth a glance. The 14-hour battery life and LED charge-state indicators are especially nice.
