Precisely One Hour of House-Cleaning Music...

Precisely One Hour of House-Cleaning

Precisely One Hour of House-Cleaning
Music...
04/09/2004 03:54 PM

New concept - don't clean until your house is clean, instead merely allocate time to the cleaning process and clean until that time is over whether you finish or not. Also if you finish before the time is up (unlikely) then clean something better than you would normally. I started this insane cleaning regimen yesterday with a statement that I would clean in a high-impact fashion for no more and no less than precisely one hour. I created an iTunes playlist full of motivational music with the sole intention of keeping me psyched about the whole horrors of cleaning my flat. It is precisely one hour long and is called Precisely One Hour of House-Cleaning Music. It contains a fair amount of cheese, for the specific reason that it's designed to get the heart-pounding and the mind focused on doing things (rather than being subtle or nuanced in any way) so don't get on my case about how lame it is. The first tune is designed to set the scene and the final one to get the pace back down to useful human-levels. List follows:

  1. "Main Title", Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Once More with Feeling
  2. "Because We Can", Moulin Rouge Soundtrack
  3. "God Save the Queen", Sex Pistols
  4. "Don't Be Light", Air
  5. "Fix Up, Look Sharp", Dizzee Rascal
  6. "Baby, I'm a Star", Prince and the Revolution
  7. "Live at Dominoes", The Avalanches
  8. "Love Burns", Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
  9. "Star Guitar", Chemical Brothers
  10. "Superheroes", Daft Punk
  11. "Fire Up the Shoesaw", Lionrock
  12. "Twist and Shout", Backbeat Soundtrack
  13. "Kodachrome", Paul Simon
  14. "I Fought the Law", Green Day
  15. "My weakness", Moby

Length of playlist 1 hour and zero minutes and zero seconds. Your time may vary based upon whether or not you cross-fade your songs or have inserted seconds of blank-space at the beginnings of your tracks.

Cleaning House 01/06/2005 05:35 PM
In a secret ballot Wednesday afternoon, the House Republican leadership ousted Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Christopher Smith, R-N.J., and replaced him with Rep. Steve Buyer of Indiana. At first glance, dumping Smith in favor of one of his colleagues might seem out of keeping for the Republicans, who normally avoid infighting. But Wednesday's vote wasn't so much a fight as a takedown.

Spring Cleaning is a good choice for managing the digital junk you've created, such as documents and QuickTime movies. But some of Spring Cleaning's features make it potentially dangerous for people who may not know what they're deleting. As for Internet Cleanup, if you use Internet Explorer, you may find it useful. Fans of other browsers should look elsewhere. By T. Patrick Henebry (Macworld via MyAppleMenu)

Self-cleaning nanofabric

Self-cleaning nanofabric 07/23/2004 02:41 PM
CNN reports on the recently-announced invention of self-cleaning nano-coated fabric that's a leap beyond stain-resistant Dockers. The materials scientists at Hong Kong Polytechnic University coated cotton with nanoparticles of titanium dioxide. When subjected to ultraviolet light, the titanium dioxide produces an oxidizing agent that can break down dirt and other organic substances. According to researcher Walid A. Daoud, several companies have already come knocking.
"(The fabric will be useful for) military people, or travelers, people who go hiking, who don't have a lot of water and time to wash their clothes," he said. "This is a very good idea because then if the clothes get dirty, the dirt can be decomposed by the fabric itself. So after a few days in the sunshine, or even indoor light, the dirt will disappear."
As both BioED Online and CNN point out, the technology was prophesized in the 1951 film The Man in the White Suit starring Alec Guinness. Link< /a>

activ_glass.jpg LogoThey've been developing it for years, so it's good news to see that the Pilkington Activ glass -- the self-cleaning "eco glass" coated with a film of titanium dioxide -- is finally being put to use in commercial development. If you hadn't see it before, the Activ glass has two advantages over normal glass: the first is the photocatalytic effect that reacts to sunlight to break down organic dirt, and the second is an enhanced hydrophilic tendency of water running on the glass to form sheets instead of droplets (like Rain-X, for instance). The combination of the two effects means that every time it rains (as I hear it does a lot in UK, where the technology was developed), the outside of the windows clean themselves.

Ever since Windows NT was first released (strangely enough as Version 3.5 - Microsoft never did get the hang of proper numbering), NetWare aficionados have swapped stories about uptime - how long a server goes between bootups. Windows servers used to have uptime numbers that were measured in hours or days, while NetWare uptime was measured in months or even years. With older versions of NT, starting or stopping a service often meant you needed to reboot while recent versions of NetWare haven't needed a reboot even to upgrade the operating system.

Cleaning Word HTML

Cleaning Word HTML 11/10/2003 11:12 PM

I took a weekend off from scowling and screaming at the content management system that refuses to be born in order to luxuriate in code that has to work on only one server, and has to be legible only to me. The bliss, I tell you, the bliss!

The result is a rather if-I-may skookum rewrite of this site’s Word HTML Cleaner. The markup it now produces is tidier and easier to read, and the selection of tags and attributes that make it through the cleaning process is somewhat more sensible.

Access to the Word Cleaner continues to be free for files up to 20 kilobytes, though I’ve added an option to subscribe at the ROCK BOTTOM INTRODUCTORY PRICE of $20 per year.

Subscribers can, in addition to working with documents larger than 20 Kb, customise how the cleaner deals with tag attributes, as well as have access to other future improvements. Thanks to a bit of hacking through Paypal’s rather suave Instant Payment Notification API, access to the Word cleaner’s new bells and whistles is nearly instant.

Whether this will slow down the instances of people firing up 2 megabyte quarterly reports overflowing with WordArt and Excel charts – then sniffily demanding why this free service didn’t work (‘oh was I supposed to save it as HTML?’) – remains to be seen.

Roku SoundBridge adds free Wi-Fi 08/30/2004 10:29 AM
Palo Alto, Calif.-based digital media product maker Roku announced Monday that its SoundBri dge network music player now ships with free Wi-Fi connectivity. Wireless networking was previously a US$50 option for the device. SoundBridge streams digital music and Internet radio from computers -- including Macs -- to powered speaker systems or stereo systems. Unlike Apple's own AirPort Express device, the SoundBridge incorporates a florescent display and a remote control that enables users to view information on artists and playlists and change the music they're listening to. The SoundBridge supports MP3, AAC, AIFF and WAV audio file formats, and it also plays directly from iTunes without needing any additional software to work (though it isn't able to play FairPlay-encrypted music purchased through the iTunes Music Store). The SoundBridge is available in M1000 and M2000 models, for US$249.99 and $499.99 respectively.

Find Duplicate Music Files detects music files that contain the same music, even if the files are differently named, and are in different formats such as MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA, M4A, and RealAudio and contain different or non-existent meta-information such as ID3 tags. The program operates on whole directories of music file at a time, or upon multiple directories. It analyzes them and outputs the filenames of pairs that seem similar.
Changes:
This release, 0.0.9n, uses Mplayer as a decoder for the various audio file formats. Now fdmf can detect that a pair of files contain the same music even if they are in different formats including any combination of MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA, M4A, and Realaudio. This release also fixes some minor bugs.
