Sharing multiple digests could be
kinja's killer app...
04/09/2004 03:54 PM

So I looked at Kinja and I was pretty impressed. I looked at it and saw something clean and simple that would hopefully appeal to people who find the morass of weblogs out there to be overwhelming. I thought it would appeal to those who didn't know where to start. It wasn't perfect, of course - not by any stretch of the imagination. For a start, the first beta didn't really make a clear distinction between the digests that you could make and the digests that were editorially chosen by the kinja team. It didn't seem to know what it was there to do for you. But after some fiddling an essence started to emerge and I started to see it for what I thought it was - a nice little simple application that would appeal to the newbies...

So basically, I thought it was polished and useful but I didn't think it was interesting. But the funny thing is that I think I've changed my mind. And the reason I've changed my mind is because of the tiniest feature that I didn't even notice the first few times I used it - it's not the fact that I can create my own little version of Haddock Blogs that's interesting, it's the fact that I can chuck it around to all my friends. I can link to it like this and - if I wanted to - I could stick it at the end of my blogroll so that other people could play with it too. I could e-mail it to someone, or IM it or even just tell someone my user name and have them go and find it.

This is the feature that I think we were supposed to catch on right from the beginning - or was somewhere in people's minds in the earliest iterations of the concept - but has kind of been hidden by accretion, simplification and implementational problems. The message has become lost - because Kinja's not about making the collections, it's about making collections that we can do things with, collections with handles that can be picked up and thrown around and shown to people to explain or illustrate things.

Nearly a year ago I started writing a little post about RSS aggregators that went a little off the rails. It was supposed to be a tiny little post that spiralled and spiralled until it became impossible to finish. It kind of sat in my drafts bin, where it remains, even though I'm basically going to rip it off wholeheartedly for the rest of this enormous rant.

The draft post was written shortly after voidblogs launched - a site kind of based around the Haddock Blogs model of pulling out a time-stamp and a summary each time a post is made and then stringing them together in a webloggish format to generate a perpetually updating metaloggy thing. Around that time the new design of the the UK weblogs aggregator relaunched. I found all of these things really interesting and came to the conclusion that they were interesting not only because people liked the specific weblogs in the list and wanted to keep track of them, but more importantly because they were a way to mirror in nearly-real-time the mental life of a group to members of that group. They could reflect both ways - they revealed the compiler and they could reveal the group to itself as well.

Which made me think. A lot of people were talking then (and are still talking now) about how to use weblogs in business and education. They've all been working on the principle that a weblog is first and foremost a piece of social software that allows and facilitates collboration. But while it's certainly true that weblog culture in the wild has evolved these groups, it's less obvious that this is necessarily the fundamental structuring principle of what a weblog 'is'. In fact I'm going to go further and state something that should probably be obvious to everyone by now: Giving a group of people weblogs does not mean that they'll necessarily start connecting with each other through them.

First and foremost, at the smallest possible scale, a weblog is not social software. Instead it is a point in cyberspace from which to speak - it's a representation of our very self - our voice. At the most very basic of levels, a weblog isn't just part of a commmunity that shares and interacts, it's an individual voice as yet unconnected. It takes time for the second-order properties to emerge - and when they do so it's not as a rapid consolidation or phase-shift between stable states of 'singular publishing' and 'many-to-many communication'. Instead familiarity is gradually gained, recurrently interesting and communicative webloggers become friends, people gradually find their communicative voices.

So the question becomes - when we talk about weblogging around educational projects or work-related schemes - given that a weblog won't automatically make them part of a creative collaborative community - how do we get people to think in terms of their engagement with others. And how do we get them to that stage quickly? How do we help them use the weblog to express themeselves and create notes and write thoughts while simultaneously ramping up the speed at which they start interacting with each other around these issues.

Which brings us right back to where we started. In my opinion - rather than setting up a central weblog for a course or a project in which people can post their thoughts only as comments, the simplest and most effective way would be to have something like haddock blogs or the uk weblog aggregator or a kinja group digest sitting in the middle in between all the participants. Let that be the one stop shop for zeitgeist measuring and interest following and in-public annotation or discussion. Let that be the place for representing the community at a glance, to see the range of interests people have (even serendipitously the interests they have outside the specifics of the course / working environment that you're trying to represent). Let that be the place to see what they're getting excited by...

And hence to kinja... Please, please, please Mr Denton - don't try and sell me weblog-management. Don't try to make it easy to replicate the functionality of my RSS aggregator. No - your killer app is this sharing of digests, this creation of really user-friendly throw-aroundable clumps of groupness. That's the the core of the enterprise. That's where the fun is, that's the playlist-making, that's the mix-tape, that's the place where self-defining groups can make their home and that's where I think the future development should move (and the marketing effort). Let people make more than one digest - let them make dozens - let it represent their church group or their anthropology class or their social software circle. Let them share them - even badge them prominently so that they seem co-owned. If you do all that, then Kinja might not just be a simple app for the newbies in the audience but a project with surprising and long-lasting power. There could be something really interesting here after all, just in a slightly unexpected direction...

Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps

Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps 02/01/2005 08:35 PM

Continuing my series on mobile platforms, I now think killer mobile apps need mobile devices designed like game consoles, meaning that it has one or two slots for application cartridges.  Each cartridge contains one or more applications.  Cellphones would come with a built-in cartridge containing the phone app as well as others.

Adding a cartridge adds new apps.  Applications have two modes: running and stopped.  The Next-App button (aka Appy button) activates (brings to front) each running apps in turn.  Some apps can activate itself when an event fires (phone call received).  To see the list of available apps, keep the Next-App button pressed for a second.

Eventually, app cartridges will be advance to become platform cartridges, taking over the full functionality of the mobile device to offer better application platform services than the one that came with the device (i.e. easy to use app download service that auto-configures apps for your device).  If you don't like the built-in calender, just stop it and run a third-party calendar instead.

Ho w to Make Money with Digital Lifestyle Aggregators - Part I

"We call it digital lifestyle aggregation and it's based upon a number of assumptions - first and foremost being 'provide compelling experiences to your end-users.' That said - here's what you can do to deliver these oft sought after compelling experiences....

1. Integration. The secret to making things easy to use is in providing an integrated environment where built-in constructs (such as IM, image gallery or friends network) provide all the functionality end-users expect. We call these 'commodity features' and satisfying end-user's expectations as to what software should be - is what it's all about. These features have to be taken for granted and assumed to be there - everywhere - all the time. Even this nascent AO Zaibatsu system provides built-in friends networks to learn and leverage off of. And they have to be as easy to use as saving off a file or turning up the volume.

In the future ALL software products and services will have built-in digital camera support, cell phone gateways, universal messaging, real-time presence management, personal publishing, social networking and oh - did we forget to say - web services? But most will just patch-quilt on these functional modules, never thinking through how an integarted approach can not only make it easy to use and viable, but also achieve an elegant design result, which then causes all sorts of OTHER things to happen!

By providing an integrated environment with lots of great things for people to do, it becomes instantly more accessible and viral. By pre-wiring all of these applications and services - so that they work seamlessly together - OH MY GOD - you just may yet end up with a series of compelling experiences - 'cause heaven forbid - maybe not ALL of our end-users are the same....

2. Aggregation. Do you realize that the digital downloading universe expects end-users to listen to ONLY the songs they download from one vendor on their jukeboxes? That it's impossible to mix and match music you've bought from multiple vendors? That's like only being able to play CDs you bought from Tower Records on your CD player! Apple also prevents you from loading music from more than one machine at a time - so you're out of luck if you have two or more machines.

That's the world we're in today.

RSS News aggregators are becoming understood (you can subscribe to me here at AO Zaibatsu for instance or at my other blog - @ blog.canter.com) so what happens when we can start to aggregate other things as well? Like our digital identity or other forms of expression besides blogs?...

Aggregation is a killer app - that no one owns. It's public domain. Everyone benefits from it. So is integration as well.

3. Customization. So now let's combine Integration and Aggregation with end-users intense desire to have their software do what THEY want it to do. To have the software adapt to their appropriate usage level (beginner, average or advanced), their sex, age, demogarphics - even their location....

This is all happening - but it's all happening as SEPARATE web servcies or web apps....

I'm sorry to tell you this guys - but that doesn't work. You need more than just a single feature to acheive the oft sought after 'compelling experience" we started this post with. To start to reap the benefits of digital lifestyle aggregation - you need to get smart about architecting systems that rely upon XML, open standards and web services.

So personalization and customization find their destiny intermixed with Integration and Aggregation. The only way to produce compelling enough experiences is by integrating a wide range of built-in constructs, combining that with aggregated web servcies and content and topping it all off with unprecedented levels of control and customization. In one product or service." [AlwaysOn, via T he Doc Searls Weblog]

A long excerpt, I know, but even though the author focuses on commercial applications, revenue streams, and open source software, it's worth reading through this in the context of libraries.

I've said before that aggregation is a killer app, one well-suited to libraries and the kind of information to which we provide access. External projects such as LibraryLookup bring home hard the need for our products to very quickly adapt to web services and XML back-ends. And now we're seeing another big push for integration in our industry - federated searching, OpenURL and SFX resolvers, and statewide union catalogs are good examples of this.

So what would aggregation, integration, and personalization mashed together in one app, designed from the ground up to work together, look like in the library world? Would *that* be our version of the killer app?

Preamble towards a post on Social
Software for Set-top boxes
03/23/2005 07:59 PM

The following post contains some of my thoughts about Social Software for Set-Top Boxes. But before I do so, I thought maybe I should write really briefly about some of the context. I've been thinking around this stuff for a very long time now, but I've been too disorganised and busy to put any of it out in public. The last thing I wrote around this area was several months ago, and was in fact entirely an attempt to set the scene a little for what I'm going to write next. It was about conceptualising how a connected media hub might operate in the home. For more background on that, you should read the three posts I wrote back then, the last of which has enough pictures to give a sense of the whole concept without the effort of ploughing through my clumsy inarticulate prose:

I started writing this post and the following post immediately after producing the pieces above, and the illustrations and design work you'll see were well on their way before Christmas. I decided to postpone publishing it for a variety of reasons, including the fact that I felt it had a certain amount of synergy with the paper that Matt Webb and I were going to be presenting at ETCon with Paul and Matt Biddulph on "Reinventing Radio". But with that paper now out of the way (and available here: Reinventing Radio: Enhancing One-to-Many with Many-to-Many) I think it's probably the right time to launch into it. So with no further ado: Social Software for Set-Top Boxes.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-050:
Vulnerability in Microsoft Word and

11/13/2003 12:36 AM
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed. If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding, changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or formatting the hard drive.
