Reith Lectures 2003: The Emerging Mind
Reith Lectures 2003: The Emerging Mind
12/17/2003 06:02 PMIn 1922, a young Scottish engineer called John Reith was appointed
General Manager of a fledgling national broadcasting service, known at
the time as the British Broadcasting Company. With little experience
and without any established purpose to guide him, Reith shaped the
growing institution according to his vision of what a public service
broadcaster should be. Reith defined the BBC's role as "to bring the
best of everything to the greatest number of homes". He maintained
that it was the duty of a national broadcaster to make an intellectual
contribution to public life. According to his principles and in
honour of his work, the BBC inaugurated the Reith Lectures in 1948.
Every year a leading figure is invited to deliver a series of public
lectures informed by their particular field of expertise. The purpose
of the lectures is "to advance public understanding and debate about
significant issues of contemporary interest". The first Reith Lectures
were given by Bertrand Russell and notable contributors have consented
to participate ever since. Former Reith Lecturers include Robert
Oppenheimer, JK Galbraith, John Searle, Steve Jones and Edward Said.
This year's Reith Lecturer was Professor Vilayanur Ramachandran,
Director of the Centre for Brain and Cognition and professor with the
Psychology Department and the Neurosciences Programme at the
University of California, San Diego.

Bands Promoting Free MP3s Online
Bands Promoting Free MP3s Online
11/11/2003 10:23 PMSometimes it's good to be reminded that there are still musicians who
can see through all the rhetoric and realize that
it might be
beneficial to them to offer their music online for free. Bands
are coming to terms with the fact that free MP3s work as a promotional
tool that brings people out to concerts - which is where they make
their money anyway. The rest of the article includes typical quotes
from the RIAA, including their favorite line: "you can't compete with
free." Of course, that's a lie. You absolutely can compete with free
- but you have to offer something worthwhile above what people can get
for free, and that's what the industry keeps missing. Besides, the
issue isn't really about "competing" with free - but using the free
reproduction and distribution of the internet to your advantage.
That's what the profiled band ("Q and not U") did. If an
up-and-coming band can see that, why can't the industry association?

Xeni Jardin:
Last week in LA, I went to a
Channel

films before a live audience, who in turn vote the work on or off the
proverbial viewing island. The project isn't a cable TV show yet, but
it ought to be. I understand they recently shot a pilot for Fox, so
perhaps it will.
One of the teams who participate regularly in the Channel 101
showdowns is The Lonely

terrific stuff. One of their pieces, which screened at last week's
event, is a dry, deadpan music video performed by two guys, called,

Technology Document
01/23/2004 02:21 PMIEEE Releases One-Millionth Online Technology
Documenthttp:
//www.ieee.org/products/onlinepubs/news/0104_04.htmlThe
IEEE released its
one-millionth online technical document to researchers on 22 January
2004. There are now more than one million full-text technology papers,
articles and standards in
IEEE
Xplore, the delivery system for IEEE online publications. The
milestone document, "Novel Frame Buffer Pixel Circuits for
Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Microdisplays," was published in the January
2004 issue of the
IEEE
Journal of Solid-State Circuits. The paper was written by IEEE
Members Sangrok Lee and James C. Morizio and IEEE Fellow Kristina M.
Johnson. The authors are with the Electrical and Computer Engineering
Department, Pratt School of Engineering, at Duke University in Durham,
NC. The paper may be read for free
here (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).
"This
milestone illustrates IEEE's importance as the primary source for
current technical literature." said IEEE publications director Anthony
Durniak. "The publications of IEEE's many Societies and Councils cover
the breadth of today's technology. With IEEE Xplore, we provide
high-tech researchers, scientists, engineers and other users with a
single, convenient source for access to the papers and technology
standards they need to develop tomorrow's technical innovations. The
value of IEEE-published information is demonstrated in the four
million downloads requested by users each month." The IEEE online
collection of technology articles and papers has grown by more than 25
percent over the last 18 months. This includes more than 80,000
archival backfile documents from 1950-1987 added last year.
IEEE publishes 121 journals and magazines and more than 400
conference proceedings titles each year and has 900 active technology
standards. All of this information is available to researchers as
full-text documents through the IEEE Xplore online delivery system.
IEEE Xplore also delivers journals and conference proceedings from the
IEE, the Institution of Electrical Engineers, headquartered in the
United Kingdom.
Access to IEEE online documents is
available through institutional subscriptions, by individual online
article purchase, or through subscriptions available to IEEE
members.

Pay To Have Your CDs Turned Into MP3s
Pay To Have Your CDs Turned Into MP3s
01/26/2004 12:42 PMI've mentioned before that I'm still a bit behind on using digitized
music, as it seems like quite a chore to rip all my CDs. It's been
something of an ad hoc process. Every once in a while, when I want to
listen to a specific CD and have the music stored on my computer, I'll
rip that CD. However, ripping them all (over 1,000) seems like quite
a process. That said, I'm still not sure I'd be interested in
a service
that would rip your CDs into MP3s for you. Still, it appears
plenty of people are interested and are paying about a dollar per CD
to have the process done. While the service was originally intended
for DJs, many people are apparently signing up to have their personal
collections ripped as well. Of course, you have to wonder how
sustainable this business is. You certainly aren't going to have many
repeat customers.
More on "Why can't the BBC play MP3s?"
More on "Why can't the BBC play MP3s?"
06/13/2004 12:56 AMFollowing up on
this earlier BoingBoing post about the curious tale of Rodeohead
MP3s, BoingBoing, and the BBC -- reader and geek sleuth Rupert
Goodwins says, "I asked
Mike
Todd, one of BBC Radio's Broadcast Duty Managers, what was with
that MP3 ban on the wireless. He said:
"A lot depends on the amount of compression in the original MP3, but
the CD-R request would be either to allow a linear version to be
supplied, or a very much less compressed version. Every time
lossy-compressed audio goes via a lossy part of the chain it gets
worse (depending, of course, on the original level of compression and
the type of audio)."
A BH studio to the FM transmitter network is not a problem, but it is
when it goes to DAB/Freeview/Dsat ... and then the studio itself may
be being sourced via a lossy ISDN (as indeed Peel is). Add these
together and the results could be dreadful ... therefore there's a
policy to (a) not use MP3s unless editorial imperatives demand it and
there is absolutely no other way, (b) not us Minidiscs except in
certain circumstances and (c) have computer playout systems working
with linear audio.
BoingBoing reader Rupert continues:
"There we have it. DAB is the
European terrestrial digital radio system, Freeview is the UK's
digital terrestrial TV system which has multiple radio channels too,
and DSat is the digital satellite system.
There's one heck of a lot of digital broadcasting round these parts,
each with its own compression system, and that's before you start to
worry about the streaming stuff on the Net."
[Xeni speaking again here]. I'm still not sure that explains it. The
BoingBoing reader who pointed John Peel to the Rodeohead MP3s says
that when he learned Peel couldn't play the MP3s, he burned them to
CD, sent them to Peel at the BBC, and they aired on Peel's show
shortly thereafter. So, either (a) the issue was that Peel's show was
simply unable to deal with downloading, storing, and playing digital
files (but popping a CD in a player was no prob), or (b) the above
theory is true, and Peel's show obtained and then aired a non-lossy
version of the material, from someone other than this BoingBoing
reader.

Abbie Hoffman MP3s

04/04/2005 06:25 PMMark Frauenfelder:
Steal this LP: here's Abbie Hoffman's 1969 record album,
Wake Up
America! in MP3 format.
This reminded me of the time I met Hoffman. It was around 1985 or
1986, when Carla and I went to a 1960s conference in San Francisco.
(Tom Robbins, Timothy Leary, Paul Krassner, and so on, were there. We
went mainly to see Leary.)
Some reporter from a paper up in Marin or Sonoma spotted us and
decided to write an article about us -- still not sure why. Anyway, he
insisted on introducing us to Abbie Hoffman, who was there. I think he
had recently come out of hiding. I hate meeting famous people in
situations like this, and I wasn't looking forward to meeting but
Carla and I meekly went along at the reporter's insistence. Hoffman
was standing in the lobby, looking very grumpy. We were introduced,
and he gruffly shook our hands, but avoided eye contact. He then
announced to us, without looking at any of us, that he needed to find
a payphone to get the score to a ball game, because he had money
riding on the outcome. He walked away without saying anything else.
I don't blame him for not wanting to be bothered, but I learned
something. To this day, when I have the opportunity to meet a famous
person, I almost always decline. I usually don't have anything to say
to them and they don't have anything to say to me.

Cyberterrorism Lecture
Cyberterrorism Lecture
03/24/2005 04:41 PMI had the chance to attend a lecture last night by Marcus Ranum on
the subject of cyberterrorism. Ranum is the author of the book The Myth of Homeland
Security.
Upon my arrival I quickly realized that I was entering a room full
of college age kids and was in the minority of people over the age of
thirty. Rannum began his lecture with stories of his experiences with
airport security and how he really does feel any safer today than he
did prior to 9/11. He than began to talk about hypothetical
situations or pranks that one could pull in order to cause the TSA
(Transportation Safety Administration) a headache. I wonder how many
of the college students in attendance may actually try some of his
ideas out. It was at this point I began to wonder when he was going
to start talk about cyberterrorism.
Ranum followed up his opening statements with what I can only
describe as a rant of the obvious. He pointed out the bureaucratic
mess that was caused as a result of 9/11. He reiterated the failures
in the intelligence communities that have been well document over the
past couple of years. I was glad to hear Mr. Ranum clearly state that
he was not politically motivated and was happy to point out the
failures on both sides of the aisle.
He made it a point to show specific portions of the Patriot Act that
are clearly written as political pork as opposed to security. Ranum
also repeatedly said do not take his word as the truth and encourage
everyone to do their own research.
With twenty minutes left in the lecture the topic of cyberterrorism
was finally touched upon. Ranum pointed out that the twenty-seven
intelligence agencies on the US do not have compatible systems and
still cannot share their data. Yes, this is a weakness and has been
known for some time. He also stated that he does not feel that a
large scale or coordinated attack would succeed against the IT
infrastructure of the US. His thoughts are that this type of attack
would only be a bump in the road.
While I was disappointed that the topic of cyberterrorism was only
covered for a small fraction of the time the overall lecture was worth
the time spent. I have not read Mr. Ranum’s book however, I plan on
purchasing it.
To learn more about Marcus Ranum you can visit his website.

A lecture on the development of the New
York City subway
05/20/2004 10:00 AMTomorrow night (Thursday) at the New York Public Library there's a
free lecture on The
Development of the New York City Subway System that sounds
interesting.
Transit Historian Peter Derrick will discuss why New
York City needed an extensive rapid transit system, the political and
financial difficulties in getting new lines built, and the impact the
subways had on the growth of the city and the well being of its
population. The focus will be on the largest stage of subway
expansion, the 1913 Dual System of Rapid Transit, under which most of
the existing IRT and BMT lines were constructed.
Free. From 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM.Science, Industry and Business
Library, 188 Madison Avenue, New York.

The BBC Radio 4 Reith Lectures are an annual series of fascinating,
thematically linked learned talks. This year's theme is "The Triumph
of Technology." The series kicks off tomorrow. Last year, the Reith
Lectures were available as downloadable MP3s; the site is vague on
whether they'll repeat it ("Lecture audio and transcripts will be
available after each broadcast"), but I've got high hopes.
