Local Goes Live

Local Goes Live 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

Google Local integrates yellow pages-style information right into your search. Search for pizza 90210 or macaroni stanford, ca and up will pop a little compass with a couple results. Click the compass, and you'll get a full listing of nearby results, with distance, maps, directions, related web pages, phone numbers, and more. You can narrow it down by category and distance, and look at a map of all the results. Google's really done a nice job of combining various sources of information for this service....

More Local-i

More Local-i 09/12/2004 06:02 PM

There are already 85 mentions of Local-i and Marc Canter in Google - so it should not surprise anyone if I blog about the service - again.

It was during the Amsterdam dinner #2 - that someone brought it up - during my pitch on OpenReviews - just as naturally as I would have. It was a beautiful moment.

It showed that folks were connecting the dots together - without me.

Local-i fills an important part of the OpenReviews puzzle. I'm hoping that similar services for resorts, hair dressers and car mechanics appear - as well.

Here's Peter Caputa's blog on their launch in Boston......

My friends over @ local-i, who I've written about several times, have just launched their service on Boston.com. branded as the restaurant search on Boston.com Congrats to local-i. Even with local search on the agenda of the big search players, a small company, local-i, has beat them to the first instance of local vertically-based search syndication.

Local Chaos

Local Chaos 03/23/2005 01:07 PM
Loca l Chaos. In the early 1980's, Ann Arbor, Michigan had a small, but thriving hardcore/skate scene. At the time, the scene was documented in a 'zine called Loca l Chaos by a guy named Wes and his friends. But the 80's faded, as did the scene and the 'zine, and only the memories were left.
Then, a couple of years ago, Wes created a site dedicated to Local Chaos, and the scene of yore. In the wake of the site going live, several of the bands have gotten back together and even played some live shows. If you've ever wondered what the bald youth of 80's hardcore would look like playing at 40, then check out the music page for current photos, and video clips, of legendary locals like Grou nd Zero, The State, and arguably Ann Arbor's longest-running punk act, The Cult Heroes. The sCrapbook features a trove of old interviews, photos, and odds and ends. This is a great look back at the Ann Arbor hardcore/skate scene in the 80's.
Punk's not dead!

More on Yahoo Local

More on Yahoo Local 08/03/2004 02:58 PM

This actually affects my life somewhat - as one of my clients - Tribe.net - is heavily into this. I'm also highly focused on decentralized, social realities and where EXACTLY the rubber hits the road where cyberspace hits meatspace.

So I need to analyze and grok this - by 2PM today.

So here's John Batelle's inside scoop.....

I'm slow to report the news here (the embargo lifted last night at 9 pm) but today Yahoo launched its local search product. I was on an informal "advisory board" for this product, but I have to admit that my focus on the book did not allow me to be very engaged. However I did get to play with it early, and found it pretty damn good.

Chris Sherman of SEW agrees, his write up is here< /a>. He notes the major features, the clean interface, and the elegant "refine" features that let you zero in on lists of search results. He quotes Jeff Weiner on the goal:

"Our mission is to understand intention of user, to help them complete tasks as quickly as possible," said Jeff Weiner, senior vice president, search and marketplace, sharply contrasting Yahoo's approach with Google's mission "to make the world's information universally accessible and useful."

You know what a sucker I am for intent-based media. Net net: I like Yahoo Local, and plan to use it, at least for now.

[John Battelle]

Looking For Local Search

Looking For Local Search 02/13/2004 01:13 PM
A new study has found that when people are searching online for a place to buy something, approximately one out of every four is looking for a local retailer they can go to buy the product, rather than just looking for an online retailer. With that high a percentage, you can understand why the search companies are all starting to invest in local search offerings. What will be interesting is how this percentage changes over time. Will people become more internet focused (location doesn't matter) or will they continue to search out local stores (which may depend on the strength of local search options)?

Thinking local

Thinking local 08/15/2004 09:21 PM

I'm sitting here in Gramd Haven, MI - thinking abotu how cyberspace needs ot hit meatspace. MeetUp does it well and so does Dodgeball, but when I hear about new services like StepUp.com - I get real excited.

The UPS store is across the street - and I stopped by and asked them about AuctionDrop.com. They hadn't heard of it - yet. But they liked the idea.

As John Battelle says:

I thought it'd be really cool if we started a website where local merchants could list their wares, so folks could check to see if a local business had what they were looking for before going down to the store. We decided against the business, but I've remained fascinated by this concept. It just seems to make sense, that at some point you will be able to check into the inventory of your local stores to see if what you want is there, and even reserve it or have it delivered to you.

John's talking about a real-world solution who's day has come.....

But I gotta wonder if subjects like this will get discussed at the upcoming Web 2.0 conference. Judging by the list of speakers - I doubt it. It's just more of the same - sort of like the BlogOn conference.

It was ludicrous - Yahoo, AOL and CNet telling us about teh future. Give me a break!

Sure - Cory will get up and holler aboput [insert complaint du jour] and Danger Mouse will hopefully keep it real - but I just gotta wonder what John Doerr has to say - for the upteenth time. Or Mary Meeker. Sounds exicting.

Anyway I'm sure the folks putting on Web 2.0 have the best intentions, and they certainly got the buzzword du jour - by the horns.

But without cutting edge entrepreneurs taking risks, what's the point? And I don't mean T'rati, 6A or Craigslist. They've had their day in the sun.

How 'bout a panel with developers who are broke, have kickass services and products and need funding? What a concept.

But anyway - back to local services. The FEDEX and UPS stores solved integration and aggregation issues for humans - for packaging and shipping. The merger with Kinkos was brilliant for FEDEX. Kinkos has been solving the copying/printing activity for humans for years.

Software needs to solve real world problems and wrap it into 'activity based' solutions. By combining eVite functionality, with WinAmp, Guestbook and Blogging features - coolio integrated parties could be born - spontaneously. Sounds like a meatpsace solutionf or Dodgeball.

:-)
