Tons of Goodies

Tons of Goodies 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

Lots of news from Google today, most of it listed at: What's New from Google. Some highlights: The redesign has gone public for everyone. Froogle is now featured in the toolbar at the top of every page. A new numrange search, that allows you to type $250..350 and get results including any number in between. But perhaps most interesting is new Personalized Web Search which lets you specify categories of interest and then uses them to rank results in those categories higher than they would normally be....

Zend PHP 5 Goodies

Zend PHP 5 Goodies 04/09/2004 04:08 PM

Zend have quietly released a veritable treasure trove of PHP 5 tutorials via their PHP5 InfoCenter:

The Tidy functions look particularly useful, especially if you are interested in maintaining clean markup within your PHP applications.

One thing that I would like to see addressed with the full release of PHP 5 is the increasing fragmentation of the PHP manual. The single online manual now covers every version of PHP from 3 upwards, making it increasingly difficult to use effectively if you are targetting older versions of PHP. The Python site maintains archived versions of previous documentation snapshots, making it easy to refer to the documentation of the version of the language you are using. With the major changes between versions 4 and 5 of PHP a similar approach could be highly beneficial.

Goodies From the Family

Goodies From the Family 06/24/2004 01:35 AM
I had a birthday a few days ago and the family was real good to me. A genuinely funny e-card from my mother-in-law (pretty good), an obscure DVD from the kid (quite good), and from my Mom, Jane Jacobs’ Dark Age Coming, highly literate doomsaying but, dig this, it came from Amazon. My Mom uses Amazon, is that cool or what? Then Lauren gave me a beautiful bird picture and—best of all—a pair of Shure 3C’s, the ultramodern way-in-your-ear headphones. This motivated me to go rip a couple of CDs with the new Apple lossless encoding; first to hand were Steve Earle’s Train a Comin’ and the k.d.lang/Tony Bennett Wonderful World collaboration. I’m writing this at 33,000 feet on the Airbus from Vancouver to San Fran, and I hear no airplane, just Steve and the band; raspy heartfelt harmony and sweet swinging strings, so tight they’re loose. (To everyone: Lossy compression of music is vandalism, i.e. MP3 is so over.) And I think to myself... what a wonderful world.

Xeni Jardin: The current edition of the New York Times Magazine is chock-full of interesting Japanophilia, including this stunning series of portraits shot by Hellen van Meene. Also included: a Murakami feature; the mundane tale of a Japanese convenience store; a list of Top 10 design hits; some foodie goodies; and a fashion photo spread by Jean-Baptiste Delmondo unfortunately titled Turning Japanese. (Earth to headline copywriters: Give that chestnut a break PLEASE. It was a lame, racist pop song even before you overused it well beyond death.)

Blackhat Briefings: Forget the borders,
guard the goodies
07/28/2004 02:54 PM
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- The Blackhat Briefings got underway this morning at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nev. Conference organizer Jeff Moss kicked off the session and took the time to describe what he had in mind for the benefit of first-time attendees. A crowd of nearly 2,000 was still getting settled in their seats as Moss began by explaining that he did not want an academic conference, with presenters delivering presentations and attendees sitting quietly and taking notes. He encouraged everyone to make the sessions interactive, asking questions, challenging speakers, and sharing knowledge with others. He also pointed out that folks here will not get pigeon-holed by vendors and forced to listen to sales spiels. The vendors have been encouraged to staff their booths with engineers instead of marketing drones.

Salon's $35/year gets you tons of
DRM-free music

Salon's $35/year gets you tons of
DRM-free music
04/04/2005 06:26 PM
Cory Doctorow: Sumana, a support rep for Salon Premium, "just realized how much DRM-free music Salon Premium members buy for $35."
Not only do they get something like twenty-five songs (MP3s) in the most recent Salon Music Mix and archived December 2004 mix, but they can download a new song (MP3) every weekday with Audiofile (which has an RSS feed), and there's a bunch of archived stuff too, some in MP3 format.

True, some of these free downloads are not exclusive to Salon, but Salon selects good tunes to give its members. I don't have the time to scan a billion free song sites and MP3 blogs; Salon performs the filtering.

Of course, as nice as having good songs selected for you and made available, it's also nice when you can choose which music you get with your sub... Link (Thanks, Sumana!)
