Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail

Anti-Gmail Bill Now Allows Gmail 05/26/2004 01:35 PM
Last month there was a lot of talk about the somewhat clueless move by a California politician to create a law that would ban Google's Gmail offering, despite the fact that it was completely optional to use. It appears that enough people (probably including those at Google itself) sat down with State Senator Liz Figueroa to explain how email works, and have convinced her to tone down the bill so that it now allows Gmail. That's right, the anti-Gmail bill now has loopholes that specifically allow Gmail. In other words, Senator Figueroa seems to have realized just how pointless the bill was in the first place and is trying to save face by adjusting it so that it still seems to have a purpose: banning a bunch of things that no one was doing, like having humans read the content of your emails to put in advertising.

IDF roundup 03/17/2005 02:53 AM

With the parade of multicore chips at the recently-concluded Intel Developer's Forum, it was crystal-clear that the company has finally left behind the last vestiges of the hunt for megahertz. Instead, we have a newly-branded desktop CPU, the Pentium D, and a host of other multicore products. Join Hannibal as he looks back at the IDF and discusses where Intel is headed next.

E3 roundup

E3 roundup 06/05/2005 10:53 PM

Another E3 is ready to wrap up. Before it rides off into the sunset until 2006, check out Kurt Mackey's roundup of all things E3.

The big news at this year’s E3 was the introductions of next generation consoles from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. The marketing material’s been covered pretty extensively, and E3 was a good chance for scrubs like me to get (or attempt to get) some more information about the upcoming consoles.

Microsoft was the big winner when it came to showing off next-generation consoles. Sony was second, and about all Nintendo had to say about the Revolution was that it's about the size of three DVD cases. Read on for the definitive E3 summary.

The big roundup

The big roundup 04/14/2005 12:54 PM
Websites that have gone live with embarrassing placeholder text. Plus May 1st Reboot encourages standards-based entries. Plus Style Master CSS editor unveils educational pricing. Also: What are desire lines? And this: Apple should hire John Gruber. (With a dash of Scoble love.) Plus the Unofficial Apple Weblog moves and retools. Last but not least, Acid 2 puts browser makers on notice. (And some browser makers actually notice! Dave Hyatt uses it to start fixing CSS bugs in Safari.)

Regression Roundup

Regression Roundup 04/19/2005 04:14 AM

The purpose of this blog entry is for you to track back to it with regressions you have discovered going from 1.2 to 1.3. It would be especially helpful if you can test up front for whether this is a user agent bug (by spoofing as another browser), since changes in browser version numbers often cause regressions even when nothing is wrong with the browser itself.

The more clear and concise the reduction, the better the chances are that we can address the issue quickly (thus increasing the odds it can make it into a software update sooner rather than later).

Please include in these trackbacks only regressions from 1.2. If you included something in the earlier blog entry's comments section, please post it again as a trackback. Thanks!

RSS News Roundup

RSS News Roundup 02/07/2005 01:41 AM

First The Guardian and then the L.A. Times:

“…Guardian has tied up with a till-now stealth company called Consenda, and I met up with the CEO Xavier Ferguson today in NYC. The RSS newsreader (Guardian insists on called RSS as Webfeeds), called Newspoint, is a downloadable app, with a tabbed and clean interface. The newspaper has started offering it as a test download for about 250 users....” [Paid Content.org]

“The LA Times has launched a branded RSS news aggregator in partnership with Consenda. You can find it here, however the service is invitation-only right now. The launch comes on the heels of the Guardian's RSS newsreader, which like the LAT is also called Newspoint.” [Mic ro Persuasion]

Frankly, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for newspapers to start figuring this out. Andy Rhinehart and I have been talking about newspapers and aggregators for three years, and we’re just now seeing some signs of life in this area. What does surprise me is that the Newspoint app is a download, rather than a web-based site.

But of course, the really big RSS news of the day is that Ask Jeeves bought Bloglines. What does this mean for everyone’s favorite, free, web-based aggregator, and more importantly, for its users? Hopefully just some text ads, which were coming anyway, since that’s what I use when I teach RSS at MLS. It will be interesting to see what happens with this during the next few months, but we’re definitely seeing more signs that this will indeed be a big year for RSS. Hopefully, libraries will be part of it.

Review Roundup

Review Roundup 09/25/2004 05:03 PM

A roundup of the stuff I've seen and used in the past few months:

  • Riding Giants was fantastic, doing for surfing what Dogtown and Z Boys did for skateboarding: making a sport interesting to regular folks. The big wave stuff at the very end is really incredible, though if I had to find any fault with this movie, it kind of glossed over the 80s revival of big wave surfing, especially all the drama at the Eddie Aikau contests.
  • The folks at Bigha sent me a Jasper Laser to play with, and it actually works as described. On dark, clear nights, you can point at stars surprisingly well, and folks next to you can see what you're pointing at. For complete amateur astronomers, this is often the biggest problem as you point and try to describe stuff to others. The laser worked so well one night that I heard my next door neighbor ask "what in the hell is that?!"
  • The "cr ippy duck" bag from Crumpler is the best laptop/camera bag I've ever owned, and might just be the last one I need. The laptop sleeve fits my 12" powerbook well and I can toss the charger, my digital rebel, an extra lens, and an external flash into the rest of the interior space. Basically I can carry everything I might need in something smaller than most of the messenger bags I've used in the past.
  • My bag is also filled with ziplinq cables, which work great at connecting and charging my cell phone, my ipod, and my CF card reader, in addition to connecting to ethernet when need be and modem connections as well.
  • Joel on Software's book is a surprisingly good read. It's basically a book of essays and blog entries but it's really well written, though skews towards hardcore (C++) software development.
  • I mentioned Medium Footwear on this site about a year ago, but finally found a shop with a good selection in San Francisco. I own a pair of these and they're some of my all-time favorite shoes. Interesting on the outside, and a comfortable skate shoe on the inside. Perfect.
  • Jason took me to an all-risotto restaurant called Risotterria that was really good and worth checking out if you're in Manhattan.

Robosapien Roundup 08/18/2004 04:15 PM
Several interesting Robosapien items have been submitted lately. From Gizmodo comes news of a giant Robosapien outside the Macy's department store in New York. Also, zodiak has written an article on the Robosapien's internals that includes lots of very clear photos. That sort of information will come in handy if you plan on entering the SERVO Magazine Hack-A-Sapien contest. Also some DPRG members dissected a Robosapien at a recent RBNO. If you haven't got a Robosapien yet, they're still available from Amazon.com at a discount. Links to more photos and video of the Robosapien are available in a previous robots.net article.
