iMovie underfire

iMovie underfire 03/13/2003 10:21 AM
Last week, Neil McIntosh wrote a glowing review of iMovie 3 for Guardian Online. Since the article’s publication, a number of people responded to McIntosh claiming that iMovie was riddled with bugs and was undeserving of the praise he had heaped upon it. As a result, McIntosh’s latest article does some serious back-tracking - “iMovie 3 appears to be filled with bugs of the worst kind. They are critical.. spread the word that, in its current state, this piece of software simply is not worth the CD-ROM it has been burnt on. “. Compare this to some of the remarks McIntosh made last week in ‘Live the iLife’ : “It's amazing technology, at an amazing price...Cheap, simple video editing software, and now a cheap, simple means of distribution: it all adds up to something that's well worth making a fuss about.” I haven’t used iMovie 3 yet so I can’t comment on the validity of McIntosh’s remarks, but it’s worrying that the level of reponse he received compelled him to completely reverse his opinions.

FileVault + iMovie = Trouble

FileVault + iMovie = Trouble 02/10/2004 02:56 AM
I was trying to import some video I shot at the beach into iMovie and it just wouldn’t go; the picture would lurch and stutter and then the import would just halt, no diagnostics. I was puzzled because I used to import all the time on my much-slower previous PowerBook. Then I remembered that I’d turned on FileVault, i.e. everything in my home directory is encrypted. I wouldn’t be surprised if soaking up data at FireWire rates, plus encrypting it, might be a bit much; so I logged into another—unencrypted—account on this computer and it imported fine. So I may be jumping to conclusions, but this looks like a bad combination.

MioTech Mio269 GPS Unit with Hard , MP3

MioTech Mio269 GPS Unit with Hard , MP3 02/01/2005 09:09 PM

miotech_269.jpg imageMioTech is showing off their new Mio269, which has the distinction of being the first GPS units with a built-in hard drive (which honestly, sounds a little suspect to me, but maybe in the handheld space that's true). The 2.5GB hard drives are pre-loaded with maps of Europe, but retain 500MB of free space for MP3s, which is pretty considerate of them. MioTech is also launching the Mio268, which has the same functions, but is cheaper and uses flash memory instead of the hard disc.

MioTech Mio269 First Harddrive-based Handheld GPS System [MobileMag]

Update: Levi writes: This unit is not the first to have a hard drive.  The Magellan RoadMate 700 has a 10GB one, and I believe the Garmin 6260 also has a hard drive built in.  There are probably others as well.  Both the Magellan and the Garmin are handheld, not in-dash.

Large size LCD monitor prices crash

Large size LCD monitor prices crash 09/03/2004 08:23 AM
LACK OF DEMAND, over supply and huge stocks of product in the channel mean prices of large sized LCD pannels fell more than expected in August, research firm iSuppli said. That, according to a report from the firm, meant a "near time headache" for suppliers but could mean bargains for buyers. The LCD panels used in desktop PC monitors fell the most, said iSuppli in a report to its customers, meaning prices for 15-inch and 17-inch panels fell by around 18 to 19 per cent last month.

Despite hopes that sales of LCD TVs would pick up because of the Olympic Games last month, the reality was that sales were slow. And sales of LCD monitors appeared to be just as slow. Some desktop monitor firms have begun slashing prices on 15-inch and 17-inch LCD monitors already - there are stocks in the distribution panel getting dusty.

Easily send a file to another user

Easily send a file to another user 12/24/2004 12:41 PM
mjmtaiwan: "There must be an easier way to set this up, but I couldn't find one, so I made my own. My lovely wife often sits down at the Mac and browses the web, saving files on MY desktop. I don't know about you, but this drives me nuts -- I like things neat. So, how do you easily send files over to her account's desktop so you can be rid of them? I wrote an AppleScript and attached it to a folder on my Desktop called 'Send to Shan's Desktop,' which just moves the file to her drop box at /Users -> shan -> Public -> Drop Box."

Click thumbnail for full-size. I can't remember whether or not I've already posted this portrait I shot a few months ago. My memory's failing, and so are my Google skillz, so if this is a repeat, sorry. Something reminded me of it this morning.

Don Manuel is a Mayan priest and K'iche language instructor who lives in a small Guatemalan village called Nahuala. He saw and experienced a lot of suffering during the country's civil war. The "hot war" is over, but life is still extremely hard for many indigenous people like him. Not much justice, not much economic opportunity. There is a longer story behind this image, for another time. But for now, I'll just post this, shot with a micro-mini Canon elph in front of the Versace boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. This was the first time he'd ever been outside of Guatemala -- a trip to the US to work on a translation project involving historic Mayan texts. A few minutes before, I walked down Rodeo with Don Manuel, escorted him inside a few of the couture shops. We stepped inside the Gucci boutique, where there was a mink-lined doggie carrier. He asked me how much it cost, and when I translated the five-figure price into Guatemalan quetzales, his jaw dropped. A few moments later he said in Spanish, "In Guatemala, dogs live on the street. This house for a dog costs many times more than the building that houses my entire extended family in Nahuala."
