What to do before installing Panther 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
With Panther's launch date coming quickly (this Friday!), I thought it was a good time to remind you what to do before making a major OS update. It's a scary time for a lot of people, especially switchers who may never have done something of this scale to their Mac before. but, the grass is green on the other side--Panther really kicks.

Should you need to install DBD::mysql on
Panther, ...

Should you need to install DBD::mysql on Panther, here's a few tips you might find helpful. First: DBD::mysql installation will likely fail if you try to do it using the CPAN installer because it won't be configured with your database settings. You'll need to manually install it. Get it from CPAN here: DBD-mysql-2.9003 .

To create the Makefile you'll need to pass it your database's username and password:

perl Makefile.PL --testuser=usename --testpassword=password
Next you'll need to add the following step (thanks to Casey West):
perl -pi -e's/MACOSX/env MACOSX/' Makefile

I also had to sudo make install which makes the whole process like so:

perl Makefile.PL --testuser=username --testpassword=password
perl -pi -e's/MACOSX/env MACOSX/' Makefile
make
make test
sudo make install

FoxServ

FoxServ 06/30/2004 04:51 AM

FoxServ Project: I'm surprised we haven't talked about FoxServ here before.

FoxServ is an Apache / mySQL / PHP installer package for Windows. Unlike NuShpere or PHPTriad, FoxServ features the latest version of all included pacakges, user defined configuration during installation, PHP as a module, PEAR, and the Zend Optimizer.

That's right, FoxServ is nothing but an installer that takes all the above-named parts of the LAMP equation and makes them all work together on Windows, saving you the hassle of installing and configuring them separately.

I use this on all my Windows machines for a quick development platform, and I've used it at the office to create the platform to serve up our intranet. You get a double-clickable installer, and if your scripts don't need any special configuration, you can just copy them to the document root and be serving them up within about 90 seconds.

The quote doesn't mention it, but Perl, Python, and even phpMyAdmin are in there too. Based on what I heard over the weekend, I'm thinking Ruby won't be far behind.

Sokkit

Sokkit 01/04/2005 02:39 AM

Sokkit - Install Apache and PHP on Windows: A while back, we mentioned FoxServ as a great way to get Apache, MySQL, and PHP (AMP) running on Windows. It was really nothing more than an installer that got all those pieces working together for you, but this was still a very handy thing since doing it from scratch can be a tedious pain.

Since that recommendation, however, the project seems to have come to a halt. The FoxServ site refers to the "old server" as "dying." While the support forums and the SourceForge download page are still active, there doesn't appear to have been any activity on FoxServ since 3.1.

FoxServ installs Apache 2 and MySQL 4, which are nice, but the PHP version is stuck way back at 4.2.2 (circa June 2002), which is a drag. Add to this a big problem getting PHP extensions to load for some reason, and I got pretty frustrated the last time I worked with it. (Although I will say that I currently have a FoxServ install serving a production intranet app and it works great so long as you don't need anything beyond the old PHP version and the standard PHP extensions.)

Regardless, I went looking for something new a few weeks ago and I found Sokkit, formerly PHPTriad. It's the same concept as FoxServ: a good, solid AMP installer. It installs Apache 2 and MySQL 4.3.9 — almost the latest stable 4.x version. Extra PHP extensions can be enabled and seem to load with no problems.

MySQL installs as a "module." phpMyAdmin gets installed with it. There are other modules for Webmail, Perl/CGI, and SSL.

Sokkit isn't free, but at $19.95, it's worth it. Getting a quality AMP platform running on Windows in just a few minutes is worth quite a bit more than twenty bucks. Sokkit 4.0 is coming with PHP 5. No reason to wait — if you buy 3.5, they'll give you 4.0 for the price difference when it comes out.

But, here's my question: Sokkit comes with a 30-day trial which installs MySQL and Apache as Windows services. After the initial install, Sokkit really just becomes a handy little monitoring app which lets you edit config files easily and stop, start, and restart services.

So how do you enforce a 30-day trial with this? Does it uninstall the services after 30 days? I have it installed, and it strikes me that Apache and MySQL are currently autonomous services, just as if I installed them myself from scratch. I'll be curious to see exactly what happens when the 30 days are up.

No matter — I plan to purchase a license just because I want to be sure it continues to develop. The problems with PHP on FoxServ 3.1 made me realize how much I depended on it, and I want to make sure Sokkit will always be there when I need it. It's a good product worth having when you move machines or need something up and running in a hurry.

Installing psycopg on Red Hat 9

Installing psycopg on Red Hat 9 12/31/2003 12:20 AM

Adrian Holovaty and I spent some time today figuring out how to get the psycopg Postgres module to install on Red Hat 9. It took a while, but eventually we tweaked the spec file and used it to compile our own RPM. I've posted our modified spec file to the psycopg mailing list. More for my own record than anything else, the arcane incantations needed to create the RPM went roughly as follows:

  1. Copy the modified psycopg.spec file in to /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/
  2. Copy psycopg-1.1.11.tar.gz in to /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES
  3. In the SPECS directory, run rpmbuild -ba psycopg.spec
  4. Install the resulting RPM, which materialised in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS

The above was recreated by digging through my bash history - hopefully I haven't missed a step. The technique appears to work for Fedora as well.
