Full RSS Feed commentary from Angie

Full RSS Feed commentary from Angie 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

Sandra BullockAngie McKaig tackles the Full RSS Feed question. I subscribe to Angie's full feed, and I think her site has a wonderful design.

I subscribe to her full feed because I'd like to read her site whenever it's updated, and... I really don't have the capacity or desire to remember to visit her site every day to see if it's updated, and... I really like to read everything she writes... but often don't have time to click-thru to her website from my RSS reader, and then go read her site, then return to my RSS reader to read the rest of the feeds I'm subscribed to...

So, I'm very thankful to Angie for offering her entire feed... and, if you need MT templates to offer your readers multiple feeds, you can steal my RSS templates.

I'd also make a plea that more traditional publishers start publishing RSS feeds, and, if they can include advertising in the feeds (to pay for them) go right ahead, just save me time and I'll read their content more often.

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension

"Feed Your Reader" Firefox Feed
Extension
09/20/2004 10:22 AM

When Firefox add ed RSS support, I had mixed reactions. On the one hand, I was excited by the boost RSS would receive by being supported in a popular browser. But on the other hand, for obvious reasons I wasn't wild about how Firefox built RSS into the browser without enabling users to choose an external RSS reader.

So, I was glad when several FeedDemon customers talking about building an extension to enable FeedDemon to take advantage of the new Firefox RSS features.

Michael Koziarski rose to the challenge and created F eed Your Reader, a Firefox extension that enables you to subscribe to feed in FeedDemon - or any other RSS reader that supports the feed: // protocol. Which means that even though the extension was designed with FeedDemon in mind, it's not specific to FeedDemon. Initial tests show that it also works with NetNewsWire on the Mac.

Once this extension is installed, you'll see an additional "FYR" icon in Firefox's status bar right next to the existing RSS icon. Clicking the FYR icon displays a menu of auto-discovered feeds, and clicking one of these feeds will display FeedDemon's "New Channel" wizard to subscribe to it.

Details on Feed Your Reader are h ere, and the project page is here. If you're viewing this in Firefox, the download link to the XPI (extension) is here .

War commentary 03/19/2003 10:26 PM

Paolo Valdemarin: "After September 11 the US were leading the largest coalition of countries ever seen. Now, whatever the US administration is saying, they are going to a war alone." Actually the British are fighting with the US.

Lance Knobel: "I'd like to have seen an alternative to war, but that would have meant an international commitment to intrusive inspections, backed by the threat of force. In the light of French and Russian vacillation, it's very unclear whether that could have worked."

Megnut: "I'm uncomfortable with the idea of America unilaterally removing someone from power. And I am very disturbed by the approach the American government has taken to achieve its goals."

Karlin Lillington: "The Bush administration has been utterly hopeless and inept in creating a coalition abroad, in showing leadership overseas, in working towards consensus."

These superb historic novel have rekindled my interest in the great age of sail, especially the exploits of Lord Nelson. The Royal Navy at this time ruled the world, although the tactics used were brutal and seaman were often taken to sea against their will. The Battle of Trafalgar is certainly the most famous engagement and HMS Victory the most famous of the ships. Next year is the 200th anniversary of the battle, the preparations sound spectacular and it is good to see the strong British sailing tradition continues.

Sailing the Martian Sea

Sailing the Martian Sea 03/22/2005 03:36 PM

The Mars Rovers have exceeded all expectations during their time exploring the surface of the red planet. However, there is other Martian exploration and research going on. The European Space Agency probe Mars Express has sent back new data which indicates that there may be a frozen sea under the surface of Mars.

Images taken of the Elysium region near the equator show a region that some believe is a large frozen sea, just below the surface of the planet. The team at the ESA believe that the area, around the size of the UK’s North Sea, contains water that is covered in a layer of volcanic ash that prevents the frozen ice form sublimating in the thin Martian atmosphere.

After reading Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series, which covered a the colonization and terraforming of the red planet, I find the news that there large amounts of ice on Mars to be fascinating. Maybe some day we'll get there.
