There are now more home internet users
using broadband than dialup in the U.S. - Does this mean
that web designers will continue down the same path as some
programmers and create bloated code? Are the days of trying to be
efficient and keeping pages less than 70k a thing of the past?

Is It Misleading To Call A Dialup
Accelerator Broadband?
04/14/2004 03:58 PMThese days many dialup providers have been offering "accelerators" for
an additional fee (the technology is often provided by the company
Propel, though there are a few others out there as well). These work
by using caching and compression to make certain webpages appear
faster - though, it doesn't actually speed up your connection at all.
Now, popular cheap dialup up provider Joi Internet is
being sued by BellSouth for false advertising, by claiming
that their accelerated dialup is "DSL speed" and showing a commercial
that implies it's even faster than BellSouth's DSL. Joi responds by
making this into a David vs. Goliath style battle and claims that none
of their customers have complained. Still, in this case, BellSouth
has a point. The accelerated dialup is
not DSL-speed at all,
and implying that it is (or that it's faster than DSL) is clearly
misleading.

Dialup WiFi?
Dialup WiFi?
08/27/2004 03:36 PMJust because you have a really slow, not always on, internet
connection to the outside world, it doesn't mean you shouldn't be able
to set up a home network or surf "wirelessly" on your laptop. Sensing
the power of niche (and shrinking) markets, some company has
apparently come up with a
dialup WiFi hub. That's right, plug it in to a phone jack,
have it handle the dialing, and surf away... at 56k, but without
wires. Seems almost... pointless.
Update: And, as has been
made abundantly clear, there are plenty of products on the market that
already do this, though, they most are also regular WiFi boxes as
well. The point on this one seems to be that it's just dialup.

The Not Really Free, Not Really
Broadband, Free Broadband Scam
08/06/2004 04:41 PMAaron writes in to point us to a story at Broadband Reports
about a
scam
claiming to offer "free" broadband, when the truth is anything but
that. The company in question is really just offering one of those
silly web "accelerator" tools that speed up some dialup web surfing by
caching images and using some compression. It's not really broadband
at all, though if you're stuck on dialup, apparently it helps. It's
also not free at all, since it's a typical pyramid scam, where you
need to get others to sign up first. Since they know otherwise
intelligent people will know it's a scam, the site doesn't make
outrageous claims on their home page, but leaves those only for those
who come via a referral code (which is all part of the scam) at which
point they start making outlandish claims anyone with a bit of
broadband knowledge would know were false.

The Best For Broadband: AOL vs. MSN
02/11/2004 02:35 AMAre America Online (TWX ) and Microsoft's (MSFT ) MSN relevant in the
broadband era? The two online services' latest packages, AOL 9.0 for
Broadband and MSN 9, try to make a case but manage no more than
partial success. AOL's broadband offering is the richer and better
integrated of the two, but I'm left wondering if either is worth the
expense.

Earthlink to Offer Broadband Wireless in
Calif.
05/20/2004 11:29 AMEarthlink will offer Internet access to customers in Northern
California through a deal with Digitalpath Networks, a wireless ISP:
Digitalpath uses a proprietary system to deliver the access. It had
better be a pretty cheap proprietary system because it requires
technicians to install antennas on customer homes. The cost of such
installs is commonly blamed for the failure of the MMDS market in the
'90s. Since then, many wireless ISPs in non-rural areas have targeted
the more lucrative business market because of the expense of building
and installing network equipment. Earthlink has been one of the most
bullish big players to pursue broadband wireless opportunities. It has
made similar wireless offerings in the Atlanta area through partners.
On a side note, shame on Cnet for this line: "Wireless broadband,
commonly called WiMax." Come on folks, not all wireless broadband is
WiMax and in fact, WiMax gear doesn't exist. It sounds like
Digitalpath is using a technology that is nothing like WiMax....
