International Phones Now at Stage 2: The
“Safety Device”
03/31/2005 08:57 AMThe ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason
for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by
Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of
its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell
phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US
citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are
increasingly confident to travel internationally. [PRWEB Mar 31, 2005]

07/02/2004 01:22 AMKim Komando did a nice article on buying camera phones recently. She
discusses the importance of checking out the quality of the phone by
reading reviews and being selective when choosing a wireless carrier.
She then goes on to advise that you “try it before you buy
it”. Snap some photos to see how the images turn out. Her
message is clear as she explains that you need to know what to expect
from your carrier and what features you are wanting from your phone.

"As of the first week of June 2004, the mobile service industry
broke the 1.5 billion subscriber mark worldwide. Research firm EMC

"New research from Mobile Youth - a mobile telecoms consultancy -
found that 700,000 (20%) of primary school children own mobile phones
and that the under 10s "represent the fastest-growing segment of
mobile phone ownership within Britain".
'They are the key fashion accessory which no self respecting child
can do without,' says the report. It predicts that by 2006, more than
one million primary school kids (a third of all five-to-nine year
olds) will own mobiles." [The

In TheFeature, I have a piece about a Silicon Valley startup that's
working on a technology that allows people to control a mobile device
using brainwave sensing.
One of the intriguing possibilities for NeuroSky's
technology is a sleep detector. If you were driving a car and started
to fall asleep, the system could sound an alarm and wake you up.
NeuroSky is working with partners, most notably China's Ziyitong
Technology to develop a sleep-detector as well as systems for gaming
and Attention Deficit Disorder.

09/17/2004 12:24 PMA new service in the UK lets Wi-Fi users find nearby hotspots with
their cell phones: By sending a text message to a certain mailbox,
users will receive a list of the nearest Wi-Fi hotspots. The service
offers up hotspots that are near the cell site that the user's phone
is communicating with. This is a fantastic offering for finding
hotspots in an area users may not be familiar with. There are plenty
of hotspot locators online, but they require users to investigate
hotspots in the area in advance. For all the procrastinators out there
or for folks who may find themselves unexpectedly in need of a
hotspot, the cell phone locator service is great. Now this company
just needs to start offering the service in the United States…...

Everyone's Jamming Cell Phones
Everyone's Jamming Cell Phones
12/08/2003 04:42 AMMobile phone signal jammers are illegal in the US, but that doesn't
mean they're not used. They're apparently
increasingly common, and are
expected to spread quite a bit in the near future. The FCC says
that using a jammer is considered "theft" of airwaves, because that
spectrum has been allocated as property to a commercial entity. The
writer of the article wonders, though, about "passive jamming" - such
as putting up buildings made of material that block out cell phone
signals. While some don't like the idea of having their signals
blocked - others think it may become a lot more popular in the future,
if only to have areas to "disconnect". The article points to the rise
of camera phones as a "bottom up surveillance society" as a reason why
we might want areas that have no signal. That makes little sense to
me, since anyone using a camera phone can still snap the picture, and
then just upload it later when they're in range of a signal. Still,
it will be interesting to see if anti-jamming equipment becomes
popular. Most people have no idea if a jammer is being used, since it
just looks like there's no service. This makes it very difficult to
figure out if someone is using a jammer, and means that no one's
getting caught using these things right now.

You remind me of those people who said

You remind me of those people who said
they'd never get cell phones
01/08/2004 08:06 PMI remember when everyone shouted into their cell phones and thought
that their batteries drained faster when they made long distance
phones. I remember when people (who now have cell phones) swore to me
that they'd never have a cell phone. I remember when cell phones
looked more like military radios. I think it's fine to gripe about
technology, but I would warn those people who swear they'll never use
a technology. Technology evolves and so do social norms.
We've been having a dialog recently about the relationship
between social norms and technology. I think this is part of the
same dialog. New technologies disrupt our habits and our norms and
what we feel comfortable with. I am an early adopter type who uses
every technology possible and I try to wrap my life around it all.
Some people try the technology and point out the tensions. Some people
ignore the technology. Technology evolves along with the social norms.
When it works well, we end up with a technology that contributes to
society in some way and becomes a seamless part of our social norms.
When it doesn't work well it either damages society or does not
integrate and is discarded.
Being the techno-ut
opian optimist that I am, I think that writing off Skype and IM as annoying is a big
mistake. They are what military radios were to the cell phones of
today. I think it's important to take what David Weinberger and da
nah have to say about the tensions they create and thinking about
how to make presence more granular, how to make it easier to manage
the emission of your presence information and control access to you.
What DOES free VoIP really mean? Can it be a background thing that allows us to continue to focus
on our work instead of being an interruption? I am very excited by
IM and VoIP and think that the tensions and the annoyances they are
creating is a good a reason as any to dive into the privacy, identity,
presence and interop issues that we've been talking about for so long.
The more annoying it becomes, the more people will care about these
issues.
