Mars Hills, Crater Yield Evidence of
Flowing Water

The hills of Mars yield more tantalizing clues about how water shaped the Red Planet. Tests by NASA's robotic geologist, Spirit, found out this information, while its twin, Opportunity, observed the deep crater it climbed into two months ago.

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said Spirit discovered a swath of bedrock that showed signs of being altered by water. It may yield clues about the planet's primordial atmosphere. Scientist believe the bedrock was thrust up from below the lava-covered surface of the vast Gusev Crater, where Spirit landed Jan. 3 and spent months crossing to arrive at a series of promontories dubbed the Columbia Hills.

For the past week, the rover has conducted a series of tests on a rock nicknamed Clovis, that is perched on a spur about 30 feet above the plain. Both Spirit and Opportunity found ancient evidence of water on Mars earlier in their missions, but new data recorded by Spirit's scientific instruments this week suggests that the life-giving liquid was once more plentiful than they thought.

Study Says BitTorren Use Up -- But
Findings Not Clear
07/13/2004 05:15 PM
Following last week's incred ibly misleading study from the MPAA about people trading movies online, a company trying to sell network management technologies has put out their own study claiming that movie traders are now just using BitTorrent instead of Kazaa. Now, that might be true, but the study doesn't actually support the conclusions the company claims it does. First, they're obviously trying to sell their offering, as they make sure to mention that file sharing costs ISPs $10 million in bandwidth costs. That may be true, but considering the fact that broadband providers offer "all you can eat" plans, they don't have much to complain about when someone eats all they can. Second, the study never actually looks at what content is being shared (or at least they don't make it clear). Instead, they just look at overall amount of traffic, never once admitting that plenty of BitTorrent traffic is perfectly legitimate, non-infringing traffic. The purpose of BitTorrent is to distribute large files efficiently, and that's what many people use it for. In fact, BitTorrent is a horrible system for exchanging unauthorized files because the system clearly broadcasts who you are. Instead, they just imply that BitTorrent is this horrible new version of Kazaa that's better for exchanging big movies -- without ever proving that people are using it for the illegal exchange of movies. Does it happen? Sure. But, the implications of the study should be supported by more factual information rather than innuendo.

Sailing the Martian Sea

Sailing the Martian Sea 03/22/2005 03:36 PM

The Mars Rovers have exceeded all expectations during their time exploring the surface of the red planet. However, there is other Martian exploration and research going on. The European Space Agency probe Mars Express has sent back new data which indicates that there may be a frozen sea under the surface of Mars.

Images taken of the Elysium region near the equator show a region that some believe is a large frozen sea, just below the surface of the planet. The team at the ESA believe that the area, around the size of the UK’s North Sea, contains water that is covered in a layer of volcanic ash that prevents the frozen ice form sublimating in the thin Martian atmosphere.

After reading Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series, which covered a the colonization and terraforming of the red planet, I find the news that there large amounts of ice on Mars to be fascinating. Maybe some day we'll get there.

Bespoke martian watches keep 24h, 39m

Bespoke martian watches keep 24h, 39m
day
01/09/2004 09:56 PM
Researchers working on the Mars lander are rising and sleeping on Martian Standard Time, the daylight hours on the lander's plot of Mars. The martian day is 24h, 39m long -- which means that the rover crew had to get custom-made timepieces (for "had to," here, read, "thought it would be really cool to") manufactured for them by a master watchmaker.

My next novel, Eastern Standard Tribe, (due out in just a few weeks!) revolves around the way that your sleep schedule determines a lot about your social circle and hence your beliefs, alliegances, and so forth. A friend of mine in DC who used to work for the CIA just read the book and wrote to point out that the military has been running timezone-tribes for years, so that all the people commanding and supporting some distant operational unit are rising and sleeping on a schedule synched with daylight hours in some far corner.

But I bet they don't get cool watches like this one -- someone should manufacture and sell 'em. My sleep-schedule is so scr0d that I would happily wear this thing and abide by what it told me about my circadian. Link (via MeFi)

The Martian meteorite re-examined

The Martian meteorite re-examined 02/10/2004 02:57 AM
Two Australian scientists have developed a new process for examining the controversial Martian meteorite, a stone retrieved from Antarctic ice samples several years ago. This stone shows signs of having been formed on the fourth planet from the sun, and kicked free of Mars' gravity by a tremendous surface impact, causing it to drift through space and eventually fall to Earth. It is believed by some to contain fossilised traces of simple single-celled organisms. These scientists claim their process proves beyond any doubt that those traces are genuine: the meteorite contains evidence of primitive life on Mars many millions of years ago.

Hunter’s Martian Eyes

Hunter’s Martian Eyes 01/16/2004 10:56 AM
In Barry Lopez’ Arctic Dreams (a beautiful and wise book) he laments the passage of the special relationship between the hunter and the landscape; A hunter—a real hunts-to-live hunter, not a plaid-clad suburbanite gun nut—has to as a matter of life or death study his surroundings with great care. I quote: “But the meticulous inspection of the land that is the mark of a good hunter becomes most evident when he uses a pair of good field glasses. Long after the most inquiring nonnative has has grown weary of glassing the land for some clue to the movement of animals, a hunter is still scouring its edges and interstices. He may take an hour to glass 360° of the apparently silent tundra, one section at a time.” In that spirit, go visit the very good Quicktime VR panorama of the Martian Surface, set the scene into a slow, slow drift (it’s easy with a trackpad), cultivate that hunter’s eye, and spend a half-hour looking at the horizon, and the sand, and the stones.
