Redshift Record Smashed Again

Redshift Record Smashed Again 03/09/2004 12:06 AM

Redshift Record Smashed Again
http://Skyan dTelescope.com/news/article_1201_1.asp

Just two weeks ago astronomers found their most distant object ever, at about redshift 7, using the Hubble and Keck Telescopes. Now a different group, using one of the Very Large Telescope (VLT) reflectors of the European Southern Observatory, claims to have smashed that record using a similar technique. Roser Pello (Midi Observatory, Pyrenees, France) and four colleagues say they have identified an extremely faint galaxy fragment that has a redshift of 10.0. This would mean we see it as it was just 460 million years after the universe was born -- at just 3.5 percent of the present cosmic age -- when the "dark age" that followed the Big Bang was ending and the first stars and galaxies were being born....

"On the Web but off the record" does not
compute
03/14/2005 05:45 PM
When you post something on a public weblog, you're posting it to the open Web, which is to say, you are making it public to anyone who follows a link to it. So I was a little taken aback, as I followed the blogosphere chatter over the Microsoft-G roove deal (here's the commentary by Groove investor and former board member Mitch Kapor), to come upon this comment by Ed Brill of Lotus / IBM.

Brill labels his post as a "not-for-quote-by-press observation." He boldfaces the phrase, so clearly he means it seriously, he's not joking. In a follow-up post he explains that "the posting isn't my complete perspective on the announcement. ... In a press interview, I'd offer a broader view of the deal, and, more importantly, put it in the context of what we at IBM/Lotus have to offer the market."

But, um, Ed, you've posted words on the Web that are readable by hundreds of millions of people. I'm afraid the cat's out of the bag. If a reporter (or anyone) wants to quote you, you can't say, "Sorry, that was off the record." If you don't want to be quoted, post your comment in a private forum! Put it in a private e-mail labeled "Do Not Quote"! Call your friends and tell them what you think, and don't let any reporters on the line! If you need time to compose your "complete perspective" on an announcement and don't want your quick initial scribblings to be quoted, don't post them.

This is a small point, and there's nothing particularly incendiary in Brill's posting that would cause any fuss. I'm just finding it impossible to get my head around the oxymoronic notion of a public Web posting that is "not-for-quote-by-press."

UPDATE: Read Ed Brill's reasonable response. Looks like, as an IBM employee, he's feeling his way through this complex and still-evolving landscape.

New IM Record in Libraries

New IM Record in Libraries 03/14/2005 06:23 PM

I've been so short on time lately that I've been trying to avoid using what little blogging time I do have to simply repost what other library bloggers are already putting up. This one, however, was just too good to pass up.

when was the last time you had this kind of response to a new library service?

"Brian didn’t give me permission to publish a portion of his email, but I’m so excited about it I’m going to throw caution into the wind. He wrote [emphasis mine]:
'Rule number 1: Don’t send out IM reference fliers to every middle school and jr. high classroom on the same day!

Had to have been at least 100 IMs in the first 2 hours after the kiddies got home. For a while, I had about 20 IM windows up at once.' "

Someone recently observed that there are a lot of Eeyo res in the library community, but I think we can officially declare IM reference a Martha-Stewart-good-thing for (at least) public libraries and move it to Pooh status.

Cost of purchasing the AIM software: $0.
Cost of staff time to "man" the AIM service during those two hours: already paid for.
Satisfaction of having 100 kids respond positively and view the library in a new light: PRICELESS.

SMS text speed record smashed
June 29, 2004

A SINGAPORE business student with nimble thumbs has broken the Guinness world record for the fastest SMS.

Kimberly Yeo, 23, clocked 43.24 seconds for typing 26 words.

The 160-character, 26-word text she typed read: "The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human."

The previous record was 67 seconds for the same 26 words, held by James Trusler of Britain.

More than 500 people took part in Sunday's "SMS Shootout", The Straits Times said.
