IE 6 Bug with pseudo elements

IE 6 Bug with pseudo elements

IE 6 Bug with pseudo elements 03/08/2004 11:28 PM

Herman Peet recently posted in the TopStyle newsgroups about a CSS bug in IE6 that I haven't heard of before. Basically, when no space exists between a pseudo element and the first brace in a CSS rule, the selector will not be applied. Jack Brewster was kind enough to create a web page which illustrates the problem.

Corporate pseudo Responsibility

Corporate pseudo Responsibility 05/26/2004 09:05 AM
David Batstone at Worthwhile (where I also blog) expresses skepticism that is not only appropriate but inevitable when it comes to corporations issuing reports about how well they're upholding their self-defined social responsibilities. Some of the reports may be honest but they suffer from Electronic Ballot syndrome: By their nature, they engender disbelief. I'd be more impressed if corporations enabled an independent, third-party group to investigate them and issue reports. Is there any such group that gets full cooperation and support from the corporations it researches?...

Pseudo PostreSQL ADODB

Pseudo PostreSQL ADODB 11/08/2002 07:17 PM
Pseudo PostgreSQL ADODB is a PHP class designed as a drop-in replacement for ADOdb for PHP applications that do not need the full power of ADOdb, want to remain light and fast but want to remain compatible with ADOdb. The API of PostgreSQL ADODB Emulation was designed to be compatible with ADOdb. I was able to remove ADOdb from my application framework and use this class instead.

Bollywood spoof ads, continued: mullet
pseudo-history
05/31/2004 01:05 AM
BoingBoing reader Chris points us to this blast from the online past:

"Another corporate '70s Bollywood spoof, this time by Absolut Vodka. ~10 minute film, made in 2002, filmed in India. It's a Bollywood pseudohistory of the mullet. Entertaining enough story (a little long...) - but really well-crafted, with awesome songs and dancing. Low-level product placement - no actual bottles or mention of vodka - but the familiar Absolut shape makes subtle appearances."

The film's hilarious, but -- OMGWTF! Do my own eyes betray me? Look closely at the faux promo poster screengrabbed at left. Is the male lead in Absolut Mulit not wearing a shirt with the exact same pink vomit print that Vivek Oberoi wears in the aforementioned Vanilla Coke Bollywood ad? Perhaps this is a secret, ironic reference to pink vomit couture featured in a real Bollywood film -- and I'm not enough of an Indian cinema buff to get the joke. If any intrepid BoingBoing readers know the answer, do tell.

Centering Elements via CSS

Centering Elements via CSS 09/07/2004 11:52 PM

Here's a CSS technique that I didn't know about, and perhaps you didn't either. To center an element on the page — like the image above — just set the margins to "auto." This only works on block elements, so you'll need to modify the "display" value for images.

img.center
{
  display: block;
  margin: auto;
}

If you want a fixed width site running down the center of the page:

div.container
{
  width: 760px;
  margin: auto;
}

Handy. Again, this may be obvious to a lot of people, but I apparently managed to avoid learning about it for the last six years.
