04/21/2004 08:55 AMAP - When Nick Holonyak Jr. set out to create a new kind of visible
lighting using semiconductor alloys, his colleagues thought he was
"nuttier than hell." Today, his discovery of light-emitting diodes, or
LEDs, are used in everything from DVDs to alarm clocks to the NASDAQ
stock billboard in New York. Dozens of his students have continued his
work, developing lighting used in traffic lights and other everyday
technology.

Safety
Dynamics is creating a system to separate the gentle susurration of
the waves from the sound of an invading amphibian army. Designed to
pick out unnatural noises – glass breaking, chain link rattling, the
odd, inopportune cough – SENTRI can tell the difference between
natural, repetitive sounds and unnatural breaking and entry. Planned
chemical sensors will even allow it to tell the difference between
shots fired and a truck backfiring.
SENTRI, designed for the U.S. Office of Naval Research, is now
being used by two police departments and can call in for back up or
aim cameras at a certain location. Up next is a mobile version. Maybe
something that shocks you when a raccoon is rustling in your campsite
trash?
Hey, now, what's that sound [EurekAlert]

Mistakes of 2003 make interesting reading this year, covering
topics including undated content, incomprehensible thumbnails and
overly specific forms. In previous years Jakob's complaints tended to
center around far more obvious problems such as horizontal scroll bars
and fixed size fonts. Either the field of web usability has matured to
the point where the common issues are less glaringly obvious or Jakob
is running out of low-hanging fruit.

Design critique of Jakob Nielsen
Design critique of Jakob Nielsen
05/24/2004 02:56 AMJakob Nielsen is a legendary usability crank who writes great little
columns called "AlertBoxes" wherein he runs down his best practices
for one or another element of usability (I always forget to read these
because I can't find any RSS or Atom for Jakob's site and it updates
too infrequently to put it in my regular Moz tab-group bookmark;
nevertheless, some of Nielsen's pieces, like the
Microcontent
thing from 1998 have been very influential in my blogging style)
Last week's AlertBox was about link-style, and it's pretty good and
sensible. But, like all of the AlertBoxen, it is ugly as hell.
Enter "Design Eye for the Usability Guy." Five designers, who have
clearly been scorched by Nielsen's legendary rants about the primacy
of usability over design, take on Nielsen's AlertBox house-style in a
kind of overblown, gushy tone, and undertake to remodel Jakob's image
so that his site is both usable and beautiful. It's funny, subversive
and in the words of the Cos, "you may learn seomthing before it's
done. Hey! Hey! Hey!"
Last time I checked it wasn't illegal to use illustrations to spice up
your web site. Now, before we go wild let us remember that Nielsen's
not exactly the nothing-but-prada-shoes type of guy. So, I settled
with a clean, icon-like style that will reinforce each guideline
visually. The colours used are basic: red for links, blue for hover
and shades of gray and black for other text. Again, let's try to stick
with a style that somehow matches his current branding.
To translate the general concept of links into something simple I've
chosen to use an underlined letter "a," applied to an assortment of
situations that exemplify each guideline. The font used is Georgia,
which happens to work nicely and is very much ubiquitous.

Nielsen Sees Gold In TiVo Users
03/08/2004 11:04 PMIt looks like TiVo is finally catching on. While Nielsen had planned
to start including data on people using TiVo-like devices in 2006,
they're now
pushing
that deadline up a year, as they've noticed that the TV-watching
public is increasingly signing up for such services (thanks, in part,
to various cable and satellite providers offering them with basic
service). For the extra paranoid, Nielsen says they won't track
things like whether or not people fast forward through commercials,
but only whether or not the show was watched at a different time than
it was originally broadcast. Still, it probably won't be long before
they're tracking commercial skippers as well. So the question is,
once the data on commercial skippers becomes public, what will happen?
Will broadcasters demand changes in the technology (or the law!), or
will they admit that it's time that they, themselves, changed how they
present advertising (or, even, how they fund their operations)?

p://theage.com.au/articles/2004/06/07/1086460217133.htmlUser experience expert Jakob Nielsen, co-founder with Don Norman of
the Nielsen Norman Group, decries the poor search capabilities within
Web sites. "A lot of Web sites have search that doesn't prioritize
results well and you couldn't make any sense of the results even if
they were in the right order. We have relatively good search engines
for the Internet but the sad thing is, within the Web sites the search
engines have not really improved." The Nielsen Norman Group helps
organizations design "human-centered" products and services by
examining all aspects of the end-user's interaction with a company's
services and products. Nielsen complains: "Web sites are also pretty
bad at predicting what you want -- all the attempts at personalization
have mainly failed." When a searcher's results are shown on a small
display, the system's ability to predict what the searcher wants is
extremely important, as is its ability to describe things concisely.
Nielsen also thinks Web designers need to spend more energy find
constructive ways to use this bandwidth: "We're now at a point where
it's possible for many users to watch decent-quality video over the
Internet. That's a technology question. But this then begs the
question, what are you going to use it for in terms of content? Just
because you can do it, doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it." (The
Age 7 Jun 2004)
