MIB MP3 Alarm Clock 04/01/2005 10:59 AM

mib_clock.jpg imageContinuing with the USB memory news today is MIB and their "Wakeup+" alarm clock. The Wakeup+ really isn't the first time we've seen an alarm clock that supports playback of MP3, but it may be the first time we've seen it done right. It supports the USB On-The-Go standard, so you can plug USB memory devices right into the port found on the reverse of the unit. MIB has also confirmed the clock to work with the iPod mini and iPod shuffle.

Alarm clock that hides

Alarm clock that hides 03/29/2005 08:54 PM
David Pescovitz: Clocky is an alarm clock that hides when you hit its snooze button. It was developed by Gauri Nanda at the MIT Media Lab. From the project description:
Clocky Images Clocky-CloseupWhen the alarm clock goes off and the snooze button is pressed, Clocky will roll off the bedside table and wheel away, bumping mindlessly into objects on the floor until it eventually finds a spot to rest. Minutes later, when the alarm sounds again, the sleeper must get up out of bed and search for Clocky. This ensures that the person is fully awake before turning it off. Small wheels that are concealed by Clocky's shag enable it to move and reposition itself, and an internal processor helps it find a new hiding spot every day.

I don't like being told when to wake up but I've come to terms with the idea that I have to. In designing Clocky, I was in part inspired by kittens I've had that would bite my toes every morning.

No cord to cut, since it's battery operated, and "recommended for ages 3 or over"—really, anyone old enough to wield a hammer.

Clocky, Rolling Alarm Clock

Clocky, Rolling Alarm Clock 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

clocky_rolling_alarm_clock.jpgGizmodo being the family-oriented, award-winning weblog that it is, I'm disinclined to tell you what I first thought the Clocky looked like. On closer inspection, that's carpet, although Gauri Nanda might've done better with a more vibrant color. Regardless, Clocky rolls off your nightstand, bounces off your startled dog and finds a new place to hide once you press the snooze button. Maybe one day, we'll have an alarm clock that just crawls on your chest and wets itself. We can dream, can't we?

MIT Media Lab might have the answer for individuals who just can't get out of bed in the morning. Research associate Gauri Nanda has created an alarm clock, called "Clocky," that drives off a bedside table and hides as soon as the snooze button is pressed. And to ensure its owner awakes, Clocky hides in a different spot each day.

They also claim that the iH5's 'Reason8' (get it?) speaker chamber (get it now?) will help provide a decent enough sound that you'll even use the iH5 when you aren't trying to wake up. It addition to the ability to 'Wake to iPod,' the iH5 also features the standard AM/FM radio and alarms you've learned to hate.

Hilton Hotels Line-In Alarm Clock

Hilton Hotels Line-In Alarm Clock 03/30/2005 09:10 AM

hilton_clock.jpgHilton Hotels are rolling out new radio alarm clocks to their rooms, complete with a line-in jack for plugging in your MP3 player. In addition, the new units are supposed to be a lot easier to set yourself, and can wake you up with the sound of one of four pre-set radio stations instead of the jarring clang of the hotel wake-up call (although, I sort of like that, especially when the friendly robot calls).

Of course, it'd be cooler if the clock could wake you up with your music, but that would probably morph into 'iPod only.' Line-in is the future!

flip_clock_supreme.jpg imageI'd say my chances of getting a hold of a Dutch-designed clock from an out-of-stock Korean vendor are pretty slim, but that doesn't make me want this Kikkerland "Motion Flip Alarm Clock" any less. My grandparents had a flip-clock when I was growing up that I was captivated by - and Groundhog Day is less a movie for me and more of a religious experience - so it pleases me no end to know that someone is still designing interesting ones.

Alarm clock waits for light sleep to
wake you
04/15/2005 04:53 AM
Cory Doctorow: The difference between being woken from a dream and woken from light sleep is the difference between a rotten wake up and an easy one -- for me at least. I have long dreamt (heh) of an alarm clock that is smart enough to tell the difference, and now I've found one:
The clock, called SleepSmart, measures your sleep cycle, and waits for you to be in your lightest phase of sleep before rousing you. Its makers say that should ensure you wake up feeling refreshed every morning.

Update: d3 sez, "They mention a prototype might be ready by the end of the year, but there already is an alarm clock that performs a similar function available now called the SleepT racker."

Digital Clock as Thin as Paper

Digital Clock as Thin as Paper 06/17/2005 03:17 PM
Just when you thought watches couldn't get any more advanced, Citizen Watch has created a digital clock that is as thin as paper!

Utilizing the electronic paper display technology, Citizen Watch has created a digital clock that is as thin as paper. This unique design is enabled by E Ink(r)Imaging Film. This easy-to-read, low-power display component is fully conformable, allowing product designers more creative freedom than ever before.

The clock boasts twice the contrast of a reflective LCD, Low power consuption, because there's no backlight and a flexible form allowing developers to create curved eye catching shapes.

Citizen Watch have not yet announced a launch date for this product, but it is expected to be commercialized in Japan in 2005. Plans for the international launch are under consideration, along with other design interpretations.

alarm! alarm!

alarm! alarm! 01/11/2004 10:13 AM

I was woken up this morning (before 7 am) to the horrible screeching of the building's fire alarm (yes, the building's not my apartment's). It's a pretty bad way to wake up. I was about to go down and see what was happening when it stopped. This has been a problem once before in the past. Needless to say, I couldn't go back to sleep, and it took me a while to get the sound out of my head and to quell a rising headache. Then I got to work, write a bit, etc.

A few minutes back I was right "in the zone" and the alarm went off again. Damn. I went down. "They are fixing it". Right. Then it stopped.

About 10 minutes ago it started up again and they are stopping it and starting it intermittently as they try to fix it. It's impossible to concentrate. If this keeps up, I'll go for a walk. And hopefully they'll get it fixed for the rest of the day at least, so I can get some work done!

Ah, the wonders of technology.

The fire alarm is ringing...

The fire alarm is ringing... 01/18/2004 09:21 PM

I am awake at 3:45 AM (Helsinki time) because the fire alarm went off in the hallway. (I'm in the Radisson SAS Seaside Hotel in Helsinki.) Then the TV turned on. (Yay! A message.) The TV started flashing "Fire Alarm" and blaring, "Please remain calm. We are investigating the cause." The volume steadily got louder until the TV was full blast. (I couldn't turn down the volume.) Then the TV suddenly turned off. The alarm in the hallway continued. Then turned off. Then turned on. And off... over and over for awhile. Finally the alarm stopped. Either the operator of the TV emergency notification system was burned alive or they had forgotten to tell us to "it was nothing." Finally, I called down to the front desk and they said, "oh, it was nothing." Doh. This is the second false hotel fire alarm in 6 months or so. What a drag. This is sort of like hotel spam. Well, not really, but it's really annoying.

My decla ration to AKMA DID flash through my head though...
