Foreigners and Japanese customs
Foreigners and Japanese customs
04/09/2004 03:56 PMA lot of people ask me about Japanese customs. They learn the
formal way to hand business cards, they bow deeply when they meet
Japanese and they call me "Ito-san." Stop that. It's silly. To some
Japanese, the awkward foreigners trying to please their hosts by
acting Japanese may look cute, but more likely than not, you'll get a
A for effort but you'll be forever the silly foreigner in their minds.
It's only the extremely intolerant xenophobe who would really want a
foreigner to really act Japanese and you don't want to be hanging out
with those anyway. Keep an eye out for indicators of discomfort but
bring the flair of your own culture with you.
Rather than trying to act Japanese, I suggest that people visiting
Japan be sensitive and aware of the nuances in the interactions. It is
more about timing, loudness, space and smiles than it is about how
your hold your business card or calling people "Ito-san." When in
doubt, shut up and listen. When smiled at, smile back. If you're
freaking someone out, back off instead of continuing your
interrogation. All of which I believe is not unique to being a
foreigner in Japan. The more important Japan specific social behaviors
involve cleanliness like taking off your shoes in homes and washing
your body before and not taking your towel when entering the bath and
not being stinky.
Caveat: If you're meeting someone for the first time, in a very
formal setting, and you only have one shot, doing the step-by-step
from the "How to Impress Japanese" book is probably a good idea. My
comments above apply mostly to normal social situations.
UPDATE: I think many people were offended by this post. ;-) Please
read the comments for an interesting discussion.

04/02/2005 11:03 PMGoats are wonderful animals, not least because of their close alliance
with Satan, all-powerful Lord of Darkness to whom we give all
obeisance. With their amazing horns, fantastic hooves and spectacular
goatees, goats really are strong contenders for being the greatest
animals ever. Want a farmyard pet that butts into things? Get a goat.
Want an animal reputed to eat tins though it probably doesn't really?
Get a goat. Want an animal that bleats like a sheep yet knows its own
mind? A goat is your ally, my friend, just like it is Satan's ally in
all things. Within I have collected some of the foremost examples of
goat-related pages from around the web, as well as some marvellous
pictures of these truly awesome and delightful creatures in various
attitudes of repose or non-repose. What more could you ask for?

Computer pioneer Jef Raskin , who

away this week. He was
sixty-two:
Jef created the Macintosh Computer as employee number 31 at Apple in
the early 1980s, revolutionizing computer interface design. Jef
established many methods now taken for granted by computer users, such
as "click and drag." He named the Macintosh project after his favorite
variety of apple, the McIntosh (modifying the spelling for copyright
purposes). Jef strongly believed that computers should make tasks easy
for people, not the other way around.

05/21/2004 02:14 PMIf you were reading this blog earlier this year you may recall my
recently
kindled enthusiasm for the music of The Mountain Goats. This
enthusiasm has not waned as I have explored the back catalog of this
"band" of (mostly) one. It has, if anything, waxed.
As I wrote about my delight in this discovery I uncovered the
existence of kindred spirits here at Salon, including our
jack-of-all-trades editorial operations director Max Garrone, who
swears by "The Coroner's Gambit," and our Renaissance-man IT support
manager, Jim Fisher.
Perhaps you've read some of Jim's in-depth reportin
g for Salon on technology and the environment, or some of his great poems that we've published. (I'm not the only one who
thinks highly of his work; he has recently won a prestigious Stegner
Fellowship at Stanford.)
Anyway, I learned that last year Jim had written an in-depth
critical essay on the music and lyrics of the Mountain Goats and John
Darnielle. For various reasons the essay never got published in Salon.
It is perhaps of more interest to those already hooked on this work
than those not yet familiar with it. But the piece deserves a home on
the Web, so I've published it in this blogspace, here.
Jim's piece was written months ago, at the time of the Mountain
Goats' release of "Tallahassee." Earlier this year saw the release of
"We Shall All Be Healed." I'm not sure Jim agrees with me on this, but
I think that album fulfills the prediction at the end of his essay of
an "all-studio masterpiece" from this artist, much of whose previous
work was recorded direct-to-boombox.

The Men Who Stare At Goats
The Men Who Stare At Goats
04/07/2005 10:17 PMDavid Pescovitz:
I just finished reading
Jon
Ronson's latest non-fiction book The Men Who Stare At Goats and it
was brilliant, absurd, scary, deeply freaky, and lol funny. The cover
of the book says it's a story "about what happened when a small group
of men--highly placed within the United State military, the
government, and the intelligence services--began believing in very
strange things." Some of those odd beliefs include: psychic spying
(aka "
remote
viewing"), Jedi powers, subliminal sound weapons, and the ability
to kill an animal just by looking at it (hence the title). As
demonstrated in his previous book, "Them: Adventures with Extremists,"
Ronson has an amazing talent for seeking out individuals on the
fringes of reason and enchanting the reader with their (truthful?)
tales of high weirdness. Forget any questionable conspiracy theories
about the US military--the truth is far stranger. From the dust
jacket:
In 1979 a secret unit was established by the most gifted minds within
the US Army. Defying all known accepted military practice - and
indeed, the laws of physics - they believed that a soldier could adopt
the cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls and, perhaps
most chillingly, kill goats just by staring at them. Entrusted with
defending America from all known adversaries, they were the First Earth
Battalion. And they really weren't joking. What's more, they're
back and fighting the War on Terror. 'The men who stare at goats'
reveals extraordinary - and very nutty - national secrets at the core
of George W Bush's War on Terror.

tml Computers can manipulate vast amounts of data,
without knowing what any of it actually means. Now a major
breakthrough in the field of machine understanding could spell big
business for its developer, IBM, as well as data miners, content
providers, libraries and anyone else who relies on information. IBM's
WebFountain is a huge collection of processors, routers and disk
drives running a menagerie of software applications, all dedicated to
one purpose: making sense of the churning ocean of information,
opinion and falsehood that floods the Internet. WebFountain sucks in
data like a search engine. Then its analysis engine sniffs out its own
clues about a document's meaning and provides insight into what the
search results mean in aggregate. WebFountain's most amazing trick: it
converts unlabeled data into XML-labeled data. A variety of
annotators, each specializing in a separate subject, scans each
document looking for familiar references, and automatically adds XML
tags when it spots them. Result: a uniform, structured format that can
be searched and analyzed. In a few months, in partnership with online
news company Factiva, IBM will launch a service to allow companies to
track their reputations online: what journalists are reporting about
them, which blogs have said what about them, even the latest buzz in
chat rooms.
