The Leak, Day #3: Leak Found, Pictures,

Fun Tidbits
02/01/2005 10:14 PMWell, I managed to wake up at the crack of 6am so that I'd be
semi-coherent when Robert and Victor (the leak finder) came by at 7am.
They were right on time, too. Leak Discovery They pulled a big hose
into the house and hooked it up to the hot water line. The idea was to
blow air through the system and listen for leaks. Victor used what I
can only describe as a plumber's stethoscope. It's like a normal...

03/19/2005 03:03 AMXeni Jardin:
Revolutionary Meatspace P2P! VCRs cast off by newly-minted Chinese
DVD owners trickle into North Korea, along with tapes of South Korean
TV shows.
The construction of cellular relay stations last fall along the
Chinese side of the border has allowed some North Koreans in border
towns to use prepaid Chinese cellphones to call relatives and
reporters in South Korea, defectors from North Korea say. And after
DVD players swept northern China two years ago, entrepreneurs
collected castoff videocassette recorders and peddled them in North
Korea. Now tapes of South Korean soap operas are so popular that state
television in Pyongyang, North Korea's capital, is campaigning against
South Korean hairstyles, clothing and slang, visitors and defectors
have said.
"In the 1960's in the Soviet Union, it was cool to wear blue jeans and
listen to rock and roll," said Andrei Lankov, a Russian exchange
student in the North at Kim Il Sung University in 1985, who now
teaches about North Korea at Kookmin University here in the South.
"Today, it is cool for North Koreans to look and behave South Korean,
as they do in the television serials. That does not bode well for the
long-term survival of the regime."

01/07/2004 01:57 PM Why Did Attorney General Ashcroft Remove
Himself From The Valerie Plame Wilson Leak Investigation? If
there is a witness willing to testify against one -- or both -- of the
leakers in exchange for immunity, what then? It seems likely that
Fitzgerald will move very quickly to find out if there is indeed a
case to be made against the leakers. To bolster his case, he may call
Novak and others to the grand jury or, as noted above, subpoena
Novak's (and others') phone records over the relevant period. Even
Ashcroft himself could in theory be called to the grand jury. If this
case does not make headlines in 90 to 120 days, it will be quite
surprising. There has been too much high level action and Comey, a
presidential appointee, knows that politically it would be better for
Bush & Company to have the matter flushed out within the next few
months, than to have it arise just before the November election.
Needless to say, this could be an interesting year for the White
House, with more than reelection to worry about. Robert Novak: Republican hardball

An old note from my journalist course
days...
12/17/2004 06:42 PM
So years ago I did a journalism course and one of the early lessons
in news reporting was just an exercise in trying to collectively
define news. It was a pretty heavily-directed effort, and I think it
had to be, because like many other things that we're so used to in our
everyday lives, it's weirdly difficult to explain to people. Anyway,
I'm cleaning up my flat and I find the definition that we came up
with on a piece of notepaper, and I'm looking at it and I'm thinking:
"This is actually quite interesting - and possibly quite useful for
people who are setting up subject-based weblogs". So here it is:
"New information of significance, interest or relevance
which affects the lives or interests of a particular group of readers
/ listeners / viewers"
It's not perfect by any means, but it gives you some places to
start when you're thinking about what to write. Know your audience,
make sure you're giving them information, and make sure that the
information is actually going to matter to them. It's not exactly
revelatory information, but I figured someone out there might find it
useful. And now I've transcribed it onto the net, it means that I can
throw away the piece of paper!
