Computer pioneer Jef Raskin , who
launched the Apple Macintosh ,
passed
away this week. He was
sixty-two:
Jef created the Macintosh Computer as employee number 31 at Apple in
the early 1980s, revolutionizing computer interface design. Jef
established many methods now taken for granted by computer users, such
as "click and drag." He named the Macintosh project after his favorite
variety of apple, the McIntosh (modifying the spelling for copyright
purposes). Jef strongly believed that computers should make tasks easy
for people, not the other way around.

has just launched a new little site aimed at centralizing access to

visitors to select a Google service using a "Macintosh-Dock"
type interface. Upon selecting an item from the "GoogDock",
users are whisked away to the appropriate service site.
The creators of Google X have provided a somewhat humorous caption to
the bottom of the page, which reads: "Roses are red. Violets are

Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to

Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to
sell baby-privacy
04/04/2005 06:24 AMCory Doctorow:
A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the
idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The
idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed
more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the
freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and
I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled
through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with
input from maternity wards.
That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It
doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it
doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and
respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no
medical endorsement of these products).
Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a
"free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical
forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the
picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.
On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to
the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free
portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines,
having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two
others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate
and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph
of both...
...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family.
They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her
name and birthdate and your full name and address...
Growing Family will use your information from time to time to
promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from
Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.
Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few
weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a
steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday
cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a
baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. Needless
to say, when their next baby was born, they never, ever bought
products from the companies that ghoulishly continued to market to
their dead daughter.

A Wife, A Son, and A Mountain of Luggage
A Wife, A Son, and A Mountain of Luggage
07/21/2004 04:49 PM
On Sunday, my wife and son returned from Korea. They also
brought a mountain
of luggage, two full carts worth. Since my wife and I already
had more than
a decade of arguments over her seemingly unbreakable habit of
moving mountains across
oceans, all I could do was sigh and hug.
My wife and I are on the extreme opposites when it comes to
luggage. I despise
luggage so I travel very light. For a month long trip to
Europe, I
would take two underwears, two pairs of socks, two T-shirts, one
jean, one slack,
one jacket, and a pair of running shoes. Since I am going to
be wearing one
set of everything plus the jacket and the shoes, the spares could
fit comfortably into
a small carry-on. If the jacket has big pockets, I could
travel without any
bags but I use the carry-on to avoid getting grilled by immigration
officers.
And on my trips, I rarely buy anything I have to carry. If
it's something big,
I ship it.
My wife, on the other hand, carries everything. Her annual trips to
Korea
usually starts with increasing shopping activities a month or
two before the
trip. In buying her gifts, she ignores logic
completely. I have seen her
buying goods made in Korea as gifts to take back to Korea. On
this trip, she
brought back goods she bought at Costco in Korea, goods made right
here in California.
She said they were on sale over there and saving a few bucks on
pots and pans made
perfect sense to her. Oy.
And much of the luggage was food. For example, she brought
back two boxes of
ramyeon, dry noodle in a cup. Of course, our local Korean
markets sell them
by boxes too but my wife said these are fresher. Fresh
instant noodle?
Arghhhh!
When I was growing up in Korea, I frequently saw a Korean women
carrying heavy stuff
while her husband walked ahead with hands behind his back.
Until I got married
I didn't understand why Korean husbands weren't helping their
wives. Why?
It's because they already had their decade of fruitless arguments
and all of them
reached the same compromise. As for me, I help out despite my
frustrations but
also try to avoid travelling with her to Korea.
Between Mars and Venus lies an impenetrable astroid field of
luggage.
