Pocket PCs Masquerade As iPods

Pocket PCs Masquerade As iPods

Pocket PCs Masquerade As iPods 03/08/2004 11:24 PM

StarBrite is selling a pPod, a virtual iPod for Pocket PCs, that -- given Apple's past tolerance for knockoffs -- may not be available for very long. By Leander Kahney (Wired News via MyAppleMenu)

40 iPods In Your Pocket

40 iPods In Your Pocket 04/19/2004 07:04 PM
Ok, 40 iPods will not fit. But Karl Lagerfeld does have 40 iPods. I'm just wondering why.

Masquerade

Masquerade 06/02/2004 06:42 PM
I just saw for the first time a feed with the filename rss.xml that’s actually an Atom feed.

That won’t confuse NetNewsWire (which doesn’t care about the filename when determining which parser to use)—but it could be confusing to, well, people.

I’m not going to link to it, because I don’t want to embarrass anybody, but I do want to point it out in case this is the first data point in a trend. (Heck, maybe there are thousands of these already, and this is just the first one I’ve noticed.)

My concern is that the term RSS could come to mean syndication-in-general, including Atom. I don’t think advocates of Atom or of RSS want that to happen. (Though I could be wrong.)

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods? 01/07/2004 06:38 PM
Well, as every other tech site in the world is now telling you, the not-so-secret rumors that Apple was coming out with a "mini iPod", cleverly named "iPod mini" are completely true. The other big story people are focusing on are that Apple has gotten past their Henry Ford-style color options, and will offer the iPod mini in multiple colors. You can read all the details at other sites, but in looking over the stories about the device, I'm wondering if the iPod mini will replace the iPod itself as the popular music device of choice. Personally, I don't own an iPod or any portable digital music player (I barely have any digital music - so buying such a device would only mean I need to rip all my CDs, which is a project I'm still not ready to bother with). Still, the iPod mini seems to make a lot more sense to me than many other portable music devices. The early MP3 players had way too little memory, but once you get up into the 4 gigabyte range, I wonder how much more some people need. Historically, of course, that's a dangerous viewpoint to take - since we've always figured out ways to fill up empty storage space. With Apple even advertising games, calendars and other iPod apps - you can imagine that the memory will go. However, if I were in the market for such a device, I'd definitely go with the mini iPod version right now: it's a better size for carrying around and it's "good enough" in terms of storage space - not to mention that it's cheaper. Thus, while I'm sure there are some people who simply need to have more storage space, I'm wondering if this mini iPod will steal marketshare away from its big brother.

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM

ifd-iv.jpg imageFor embedded computing hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection; that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around $2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives instead.
Read - Flash memory ATA hard drive [TechJapan]

Update: Reader Tom Lee brings up a much cheaper option for hackers on a budget (after the jump.)

iPods

iPods 12/02/2003 03:42 PM
(from Robert) New York Times Magazine had an interesting article about Apple and the iPod a few days ago, The Guts of a New Machine. I didn't expect much when I resorted to asking, in so many words, whether he thinks consciously about innovation. ''No,'' [Steve Jobs] said, peevishly. ''We consciously think about making great products. We don't think, 'Let's be innovative!''' He waved his hands for effect. '''Let's take a class! Here are the five rules of innovation,...

Canadians Can't Tax iPods... For Now

Canadians Can't Tax iPods... For Now 12/19/2004 03:47 PM
Almost exactly a year ago, Canada started taxing MP3 players. They had already been taxing things like blank CDs as a sort of "tax to cover unauthorized music copying" and the idea was to extend it to MP3 players... even for those who were using the players for completely legitimate purposes. Now, a Canadian Court has ruled that this tax is illegal. The reasoning is basically that the wording of Canada's Copyright Act clearly doesn't cover things like MP3 players. What this really means is that Canadian politicians are likely to change that law soon. If anything, certain Canadian politicians will probably use this as an opportunity to try to make the law much more entertainment industry friendly.

Thanko iCombi Bluetooth iPod Set

Thanko iCombi Bluetooth iPod Set 04/07/2005 12:44 PM

thanko_ipod.jpg image
Thanko's new "iCombi Wireless Stereo Headset" is a package deal with headphones and Bluetooth adapter for most modern flavors of iPod (except Shuffle). Compatible with 2nd, 3rd, 4th, photo and mini iterations of "everyone's favorite audio player," the iCombi headphones feature pause, skip and a couple other buttons. The lithium ion battery inside the headphones will last you for about 11 hours, but not that it really matters as you can just recharge them by USB anyway. Thanko didn't mention whether or not the headphones were compatible with the Headset Bluetooth profile (for your phone), but they don't have a mic so I guess not. The range is 10 meters (about 32 feet), and price 15,800 yen.
