Defying classification

Defying classification 01/23/2004 02:21 PM

What is Planet ApacheWhat is Technorati?  These questions fascinate me.

Mailing list vs comments as a venue for dialog?  To me, that's like comparing board meetings vs pubs for as venues for making business decisions.

I am told that using information at the IP layer to affect behaviour two layers up isn't going to work?  And yet I run firewall programs filter outgoing connections based on the path of the main program which issued the request.  Despite coming up with "perl.exe" for a fair number of commands, it does seem to catch a lot of spyware.

Classifications are so impossible, yet so darn useful.

HOWTO make a gravity-defying room

HOWTO make a gravity-defying room 03/24/2005 02:22 PM
David Pescovitz: Two UC Berkeley students explain how they transformed their co-op room into a mind-bending, gravity-defying suite of surreality:
Ordinary-Creators-400The way this all got started was that my friend and i were sitting around at dinner chatting about what to do for the upcoming room-to-room party. We went through a whole bunch of ideas for room themes. And then — you know how, sometimes when you're bored, you look up and imagine what it would be like if gravity turned upside down and you got to walk around on the ceiling? (Does everyone have this daydream?) Anyway, we both mentioned it at the same time, and then it dawned on us that we could make it happen. Or a variant, anyway. I think sideways actually works better than upside-down, because then you can integrate real people into the scene in strange ways.

The World Expo 2005 opened doors to visitors today. Attractions include robo ts, a mammoth, and participating countries from Australia to Zimbabwe. Some think that in the age of the Internet and intercontinental travel, world expos are becoming o bsolete; others think the Aichi Expo might spawn a new industry: industrial tourism. The last Expo in Japan was held in Osaka in 1970, and brought us arguably the world's ugliest artifact.

Thanks to Michael Geist for alerting me to this: There's an extraordinary decision (unanimous) by the Canadian Supreme Court that all looking for balance in this "war" should read: LSUC v. CCH. Convention Wisdom From the CEO: Day Two
With the Democrats

I went to see Rod O'Connor, CEO of the convention. And I asked him a lot of "why" questions. (Including why he's called CEO.) He has a coherent story. That doesn't mean wholly convincing, only that it holds together what's happening this week in the Fleet Center. His view of what political conventions are? Message delivery over multiple platforms, with television yet the biggest deliverer. But that too is a convention-- of thought. It can change.

Why 2004 won't be like 1984. A phenomenal read detailing why Apple's reluctance to open up iPod is not the harbinger of doom that so many pundits claim it is. The horror! Apple may have learned from its mistakes with Macintosh 20 years ago and guess what? Macintosh's failure had little to do with licensing. That is, if you agree with the analysis over at daringfireball.net. This article points out why the media pundits are wrong about Apple's reluctance to open up iPod and shows why their position today is entirely different, and stronger, than 20 years ago. Let the flame wars begin!

Via Visa. But I will shorten it, and only answer a single question. The only question I care for anymore.

If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?
I would take one certain person, and give her the love she seeks, because it is what she deserves. But which was not mine to give.

I don't want to hurt anyone else ever again.

Please excuse my low bitrate for now. Too much to think.
