google advertises itself

google advertises itself 12/30/2003 01:16 AM

Since Google was founded, I have never, ever seen an ad for it or for any of its services. That changed today, as I was reading the Wall Street Journal and came across this (partial screenshot):

Who Advertises On WhenU?

Who Advertises On WhenU? 06/30/2004 01:07 PM
Last week, we wrote about big companies that advertise through spyware, noting that most of them refused to admit it (with Verizon being the big exception). Ben Edelman has decided that it was time to do a more thorough bit of research on who advertises through WhenU and began releasing the findings today. As noted last week, there are plenty of big companies such as Verizon, Priceline and Best Western. The article about the report also notes the surprising news that Major League Baseball (who has been sinking to new lows recently in some of their advertising deals) has actually made the decision that they will no longer sign deals with any company that advertises on WhenU or Claria. It would be interesting to find out if that's actually true. Considering some of the big name advertisers listed as working with WhenU, I'm sure MLB has at least a few of them signed to ad deals as well.

Apple has a new iPod ad up, and from the talk of people on the Mac sites, you'd think it was the third coming of Jobs or something. The Vines score a spot in the ad, which is...cute, but supports the sort of reckless facial hair that's become far too...

I just saw a text ad in this article (it might not be here anymore due to rotation):"Sponsor Spot:Your customers use Google throughout the buying cycle. Advertise on Google and stay with them all the way. Google does 1/3 of all searches, with more than 10 billion B2B searches a year and keyword-targeted ads that reach an in-market audience. Learn more by clicking here or email b2b@google.com."The choice of place (Line56) and copy shows they want to reach out enterprise customers. Seems organic growth can only take them so far, and they eventually decided to start advertising as well (did you ever see an ad for Google before?)Update: Robert tells me Google started advertising its search appliance last month, and he saw ads for Adwords on Clickz about two weeks ago.

The inimitable fiction writer and satirist George Saunders typically runs his political convictions through his work as undercurrent, the subsurface but unmistakable charge of his dark and poignant hilarity. His latest offering is this "press release" -- a manifesto of sorts from a group known as PRKA.
