08/22/2004 02:35 AMSchool groups, sports teams, clubs, and other non-profit groups are

Elizabot passes sex-chat Turing test
Elizabot passes sex-chat Turing test
07/27/2004 05:51 AMA bored hacker modified an Eliza programme to act as an IRC sex-chat
bot that impersonated an eighteen year old girl (or, rather,
impersonated a sex-chat afficianodo of indeterminate gender
impersonating an eighteen year old girl). He assumed that people would
try to have cyber-sex with his bot and get bored, but in fact a
surprising number were convinced and even got off with it.
This is a plot element in Bruce Sterling's brilliant "RU486?" a short
story collected in Globalhead -- feminist hackers finance their RU486-running
operation with a phone-sex line staffed by automated chatterbots.
It turns out that pornbots are among the class of Eliza-derivatives
that can pass a Turing Test (or rather, horny sex-chat boys are among
the class of human beings that can't tell a chatterbot from a person
-- other groups include psychotherapists, who, in one experiment,
couldn't distinguish actual transcripts of therapy sessions with
schizophrenics from simulated therapy with schizophrenic chatterbots;
and the university student who mistook a chatterbot for his prof in
the middle of the night when he IMed same for permission to extend

'eliza' is a program that talks to you, pretending to be a
psychologist. its script of possible responses is super tiny, so it
doesn't fool anyone. or so i thought.
IRC is a network full of chat rooms (or "channels") where a lot of
scary internet people (or "perverts") hang out. my friend reduz found
a version of 'eliza' that could go on IRC. he put it on IRC. a lot of
people from other countries thought it was a real woman, so naturally
they tried to have sex with it. they got frustrated quickly. reduz is
a bad man...
so i replaced eliza's tiny, boring script with a massive dumb blonde
script that has like 3,800 responses on all sorts of topics, but
mostly sex. jenny18 is very horny and she loves talking to horny guys.
and everyone knows the best place to talk to horny guys is on dalnet
irc sex channels.

Safari Passes the Acid2 Test (Updated)
Safari Passes the Acid2 Test (Updated)
06/05/2005 11:17 PM
Safari now passes the Acid2 test. There were two
issues left that needed to be resolved.
The first issue involved implementing a few enhancements to the
object element. I needed to support fallback content when invalid
MIME types were specified or when bad status codes were returned for
HTTP requests (like 404). After fixing these bugs and a couple of
other problems with intrinsic sizing of plugins, the eyes of the face
showed up.
The second issue involved improper antialiasing of the border
corners. Antialiasing was enabled for the drawing of the corner
polygons, and this resulted in a bleed-through of the background.
Because the two corners were drawn separately, the antialiasing was
actually incorrect, since it was disrupting the join of the corners by
letting the background show.
Here are the patches for all of the problems fixed in Safari to
make the test pass.
Fix parsing
of the REL attribute on links.
Disallow
TABLE inside P in strict mode.
Add
support for min/max-width/height for positioned elements.
Fix the
rendering glitch that causes the reference page to paint
garbage.
Make sure
that percentages that go to auto don't mess up the self-collapsing
block check.
Implement
SGML-style comment parsing for HTML in strict mode.
Make sure
empty tables honor CSS-specified height in strict mode.
Fix
baseline alignment within table cells to use the bottom of empty
blocks. Fix floats to not grow if child floats overhang but the
height of the outer float is auto.
Make sure
percentage min-height goes to 0 and not auto when the percentage does
not apply.
Implement
fallback content for the object element and fix intrinsic sizing to
work properly when images are specified in the object element.
Disable
antialiasing for the drawing of polygons.

http://www.schoolresults.orgThis week a new Web site went online as part of the No Child
Left Behind Act of 2001, an education law that had strong support from
President Bush. The site displays results from testing of elementary
school students sorted by geographic area. The data include statistics
about the percentage of students who are economically disadvantaged
and the numbers of students who show acceptable progress in reading
and math proficiency. Data are currently available for six
states--Delaware, Florida, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and
Washington--and data from all states is expected to be available
eventually. Testing for middle and high school students is not
scheduled to begin until 2006. The project was funded jointly by the
Federal government and the Broad Foundation, which supports elementary
and secondary public education.[Federal Computer Week, 3 February
2004] This site will be added to

reported on it last Friday. With more Googling, I found out MIRTs

Wi-Fi Means: Never Having to Say "I'm
Not Working"
01/16/2004 11:01 AMThe New York Times offers this cheery piece that suggests you can
still ignore your kids while in the same room [reg. required]: I'm
sounding cynical, but this article does extol the virtues of being
able to be connected all of the time and work all of the time, even
when in physical proximity to your family. Seriously, however, the
notion that you can get necessary work done and not have to hole
yourself up in a basement or at a specific location is one of the
great benefits of a home wireless network. Oddly, the piece opens
looking at Oren Michels, identifying him as the president of a human
resources benefits administration firm. I knew that name, so I perform
a Google search, and find that he is also president and CEO of
WiFinder, a Wi-Fi directory site. (Disclosure: I'm the senior editor
at JiWire, an editorial and directory site focused on wireless that
competes for ad/sponsor dollars with WiFinder.) I shot a note to Oren
to confirm that he was still in that role at WiFinder, which he is.
Like WiFinder's chairman and founder Scott Rafer, Oren wears a few
hats. My point here is not that it's odd that Oren has multiple jobs,
but rather it's an odd choice of the reporter to not mention that Oren
Michels is the head of a company that's devoted to spreading
information about Wi-Fi. It's not bias; it's just a strange omission,
n'est c'est pas?...

could be tampered with through vulnerabilities via the OpenSSL

What the Attack on Abu Ghraib Means
What the Attack on Abu Ghraib Means
04/04/2005 12:46 PMAs I
mentioned
earlier, the attack on Abu Ghraib is proof that al Qaeda is now
officially in Iraq. The execution followed a classic al
Qaeda pattern. Here are some things that the press missed in the
little coverage they provided:
- The level of sophistication. Swarming and feints.
- Large number of attackers (50).
- Low casualties for attackers killed (~1 maybe).
- No prior intelligence on a large, well planned attack of this
size.
- Weapons mix: RPGs, VBIEDs, and small arms.
This is problematic. This attack demonstrates that Al Qaeda
can now mount an attack of the size and sophistication necessary to
over-run a large number of US troops.An over-run could
produce significant US casualties and captives.
