Iosono: Equitable Surround Sound

Iosono: Equitable Surround Sound 07/27/2004 09:21 AM

iosono_sound.jpg image

Wired News profiles a new sound technology called 'Iosono' which aims to recreate the sweet spot of 3D sound in every seat of a theater. Created by one of the major developers of MP3, Iosono uses over 300 speakers arranged around a space to provide more realistic environment, one where sound can subtly move across the room for everyone listening, not just those in the middle of all the speakers. Unfortunately, as cool as the technology might be, movies theaters are already scrambling to scrape together enough money to pay for digital projection and other upgrades, and since no movie studios are currently producing movies with the Iosono format, it's unlikely owners will be rushing to install a 300-speaker upgrade for a format with an unknown future.

IT Managers Have Spam Under Control

IT Managers Have Spam Under Control 06/15/2004 06:24 PM
A year and a half ago, we wrote about a study saying that most people didn't get too much spam at the office. It was mostly a personal email account problem. Nowadays, Symantec was surprised to find that the results are basically the same: most people don't think spam is a problem at work - if they're ordinary employees. The IT staff, however, tells a very different story. To them, spam is a huge problem. What this suggests, of course, is that the IT staff, for all their hair pulling, is actually doing a fairly good job blocking spam and keeping it out of employee inboxes.

Why IT managers value analyst firms'

Why IT managers value analyst firms'
conferences

ORLANDO, Fla. -- "You can't trust vendor marketing material at all," said the CIO for a Midwest-based manufacturing company over beers at the GigaWorld 2004 conference. It costs around $2,000 to attend, and there are about 800 people here; I was told unofficially that at least 500 paid in full. And this isn't a big analyst-sponsored conference, either. Gross revenue of $1 million (not taking into account sponsorships, advertising sales, etc.) strictly from attendees for a four-day conference -- that looks like a profitable enterprise.

Contact Managers - Evil or Good?

Contact Managers - Evil or Good? 07/09/2004 11:36 PM

A friend called me this morning saying that he got an e-mail message from someone he knew, but that message was apparently sent on his behalf by Plaxo. This friend was wondering what I knew about Plaxo, and whether he should respond to the message, which was asking him for all sorts of information he didn't feel comfortable sending. Since I hadn't heard of Plaxo before, I did a little research. Deane even has a post on it.

And the more I looked into it, the less I liked the whole concept.

Sometimes a lighter-weight window manager is in order, such as for laptop usage, children's use, or quick startup applications. Here are four "alternative" window managers that are mature, fast, and functional.
