From Foreign Affairs comes How to Deal With North Korea.

From the New York Times comes
Q&A: Should U.S. Launch Direct Talks with North Korea?

Here, by the way, is the fourth footnote from How to Deal With North Korea :

Had the Agreed Framework not been signed in 1994, the North's plutonium-based program would by today have produced enough plutonium for up to 30 nuclear weapons. Critics of the accord should not ignore this fact.

Networked homes move closer to reality [CNET News.com]

Gotta love those Koreans.  10 years ago no one even mentioned Korea in terms of hi-tech.

Today not only does Korea have the highest percentage of broadband penetration - but also two major players in our World - Samsung and LG.

All I can say is that the folks at the local Korean BBQ place (Brothers on Geary) know me and my family pretty well.  My children have been raised on Bul Go Ki, Kim Chee and Jap Chey - and they fight for a turn at the grill.

This article is on home networking - but they're also leading in memory, LCDs, cell phone and industriousness.  I've heard stories of 12 hours shifts going on hand-in-hand between Kansas City and Seoul.

Korea

Korea 06/21/2004 01:05 AM

Korea is a country where:

  • Everyone thinks they know best.
  • No one is willing to lose.
  • Final decisions are never final.
  • Opponents are respected by vilifying and dehumanizing.
  • Violence is considered a way of teaching.

I know this because I know best and I am not prepared to accept contrary opinions.  Anyone who thinks otherwise are communist pigs who deserves a good beating so they will know better.  See what I mean?

KTF to Pioneer Ubiquitous Orchestra With Mobile Baton

"Today the number of mobile phone subscribers has surpassed 35 million, and accounts for 75 percent of the total population.

In particular, almost all people in their 20s and 30s own their mobile phones and a mobile phone is the most wanted birthday present among elementary school students.

Not too long ago a mobile phone symbolized wealth and power, now, in such a short time it has become a necessity....

With such advanced mobile infrastructure in place, everyday life is rapidly going mobile.

Sookmyoung Women¡¯s University in Seoul is the case in point and currently attracting attention from all over the world.

Under an initiative to build a mobile campus with KTF, students now use their mobile phones with built-in student ID card to enter a library, borrow a book and inquire about personal records.

They installed an attendance check system at a large lecture hall whereby students can simply touch their phone to the system to record their attendance.

And hospitals are now getting in on this too. Samsung Medical Center now uses PDAs to identify and check patient records including the status of a patient, treatment records, prescription, test results anytime and anywhere. Much more convenient and reliable than the bulky, paper records of the past....

More interestingly, now mobile phones are used as means for well-being by providing information such as blood sugar, diet and meditation. A mobile phone even offers services like driving away mosquitoes, a finger vibrator for hand acupuncture and music therapy, a guard service by sounding a siren, a location tracking service and product information in which a camera phone is used to read a barcode." Sales of MP3 Mobile Phones to Break 5 Million at Home This Year

"This year, LG Electronics introduced Korea's first MP3 mobile phone, the LP3000, which has sold over 300,000 units, and the company expects that the sale of their MP3 models will easily smash through 1 million units this year. An LG official noted that of the 20 new models to be introduced in the domestic market by the end of this year, 80~90 percent of them will be MP3 phones. He also said MP3 functions will become a basic function of mobile phones like camera function.

Pantech & Curitel said it expects 1 million of its 3 million units of supply to be MP3 phones. Most of its 15 new models will be MP3 mobile phones. The company added, 'We plan to provide MP3 function as a basic function.' It explained that therefore, the domestic MP3 market should greatly expand." [The Digital Chosunilbo , via textuall y.org]

Sa msung Shows 'World's First' Hard Drive Phone

North Korea Said WHAT?!?

North Korea Said WHAT?!? 04/09/2004 11:50 PM
FilteredNewsFilter: The only headline about North Korea in most of the media is that the U.S. Wants North Korea Working Group Talks to Resume Before the End of April. But, if you live in Australia or parts of Asia, you will have heard about N.K.'s rather shrill official statement claiming that the U.S. is "dri ving the military situation on the Korean peninsula to the brink of a nuclear war" with "moves to put the strategy of pre-emptive nuclear attack into practice." Fighting words. How come nobody in the 'real media' around here seems to have noticed it yet?
I will withdraw my snark if BOTH stories make the morning papers tomorrow, but I doubt it.

It's cold and foggy in Seoul - but I'm all jazzed to do our meeting today and nerd out with some serious nerds. I'm having the best hotel access experience of my life. It's so civilized.

My username is my room # and my password is my last name. The bandwidth is great, it started up flawlessly and it's something like $4 a day.

Boy do I wish all hotels were this civilized.

What's up between Japan and Korea

What's up between Japan and Korea 04/06/2005 03:22 PM

History Lesson: Heart of the matter by Hayami Ichikawa and others at Asahi Shimbun in Japan pinpoints the real issue behind the ongoing conflict between Japan and Korea over Dokdo (Takeshima) islets: Koizumi and his cabinet are clueless.

Hayami understands why Koreans are so upset over Dokdo and explains it well:

To the South Koreans, Takeshima, a group of islets called Tokto in Korean, represents a symbol of Japan's 1910-45 colonization of the Korean Peninsula.

The incorporation of the Sea of Japan isles into Shimane Prefecture on Feb. 22, 1905, is viewed as a prelude to what Japan was later to inflict upon the peninsula.

It's now 2005 and it seems to be happening all over again.

Japanese government's history whitewashing service covers US too because mentions of the fact that no WMD has been found in Iraq were removed from school textbook drafts at the request of Japanese government officials.

Pretty funny?  Well, not if you consider that Japan is trying to buy a seat in the UN Security Council.  Brrrrr!

Korea, A Nation of Spoons

Korea, A Nation of Spoons 06/11/2004 03:34 AM

I think Korean food is wonderful.  After all, I have eaten it all my life and I still eat it three meals a day (thanks to my wonderful wife).  But what I haven't noticed until recently is how Korean cuisine is uniquely 'spoon-centric'.  Other countries use spoons as well, but they are usually brought out only when there is a need (i.e. soup).  In Korea, spoon is the primary utensil.

As long as I could remember, I had a spoon and chopstick with my name on them.  By that, I don't mean my name was inscribed on them, but I could recognize my utensils by the shape, color, feel, and sometimes smell (well, I was a little paranoid when I was little).  With every Korean meal, my spoon and chopsticks were laid side-by-side like a couple married for life.  Which is the male?  The spoon, of course.  It's masculine and uncompromising where chopsticks are feminine and versatile.

Why is Korean cuisine so spoon-centric?  Because a proper Korean meal comes with a bowl of rice and a bowl of soup for each person.  The spoon is used for both the rice and the soup.  The chopstick is used mainly for the side-dishes where, in China or Japan, chopstick is used for practically everything.  Also, there is usually a shared soup in the center for which spoons come in handy.  These center-soup is usually served piping hot and has a name that ends with either Tang or Jhigae (i.e. Maewoon-Tang or Kimchi-Jhigae).

Hmm.  This post made me hungry.
