X-Files actor invents gadget to prevent
laptop-induced infertility
12/24/2004 12:09 PMActor Dean Haglund of the X-Files has invented the Chill Pak, a
cooling system for computer laptops, which were identified in a recent
study as potentially lowering sperm counts in men.
Haglund's Chill Pak is a freezable mat designed for placement beneath
a laptop to cool the CPU, which tends to overheat when users run
today's computer programs. Not only does this cooling action allow the
laptop to run faster and more smoothly, it also prevents the
overheating attributed to male infertility. The Chill Pak is encased
in a condensation-free material to protect the electronics from
moisture.
Haglund inadvertently discovered this innovation while recovering from
a knee injury. Haglund recalls, "I was watching a movie on my laptop,
and it kept locking up on me. The ice pack protecting my knee injury
accidentally slid underneath my laptop, and the movie immediately
began playing, trouble-free. I realized the cooling action of the ice
pack was the key." Haglund immediately launched his Chill Pak
invention through his own company Geek Chic, which is scheduled for
beta-testing with Time Warner Cable employees nationwide. The Chill
Pak can also be personalized with corporate logos.

Doctors Want Their Mobile Phones
Doctors Want Their Mobile Phones
07/01/2004 03:41 PMThere have been some questions lately on why exactly hospitals ban
mobile phones. The common reasoning, of course, is that the phones
may interfere with medical equipment -- but most medical equipment is
pretty well shielded, and there are lots of other items, such as
emergency service radios that would seem likely to cause a lot more
interference, but don't. So, now, many doctors in the UK are standing
up and saying
the ban on mobile
phones should be dropped. They point out that risks are minimal,
and it would make their lives much easier. They also point out
(probably quite accurately) that they're positive plenty of people are
wandering around hospitals all the time with mobile phones turned on
in their pockets, and they don't see why they should be banned. Of
course, there
are other reasons for keeping mobile phones away
from doctors -- such as the fact that they
can pick up
germs. Good thing there's now a
sterilizing
phone charger.

Doctors Warming Up To Email
Doctors Warming Up To Email
04/27/2004 03:19 AMTwo years ago we had a post about how
few
doctors were willing to communicate with their patients via email.
Some doctors were afraid they would be overwhelmed with email, or
that important information would get lost in not being able to speak
directly to the patient. A year ago, it sounded like the tide was
turning as a study showed that
doctor-
patient emails were generally very helpful. Now, it appears the
doctors are catching on. Many more are
emailing with
patients and find that it's been very useful. Often, patients are
better able to express what they're feeling when they get to write it
down, rather than when faced with the doctor in the white coat staring
down at them. Certainly, some people abuse the communications
channel, but it sounds like very few do - and the positives greatly
outweigh the negatives. Still, there are some doctors who are
concerned that they don't get to charge for email consultations, and
are trying to figure out ways around that. Realizing this is becoming
an issue, some health insurance plans are covering doctor email
consultations in addition to regular visits.

non-profit
02/10/2004 05:22 PMThis is a horrible display of media manipulation. The nonprofit,
Physicians Committee for Responsible
Medicine, stole and leaked confidential data that indicated
that Robert Atkins (author of the famous diet) was obese when he
died. The news stories
exploded all over
the world (267 on Google News alone), all with the
title: "Atkins was obese when he died." Unfortunately,
the information is apparently baseless. According to
the
AP, Atkins
was in a coma during his last week of life where he was pumped with
fluids. These fluids accounted for his extensive weight
gain. This group obviously did this to discredit a diet
that clashed with their low-fat orthodoxy. Shame. This is
a level of desperation and maliciousness that denigrates the
committee and their cause.
