In Tustin for the Night

In Tustin for the Night 03/08/2004 11:22 PM

Ray and I headed down to Southern California today. We left my new place around 8:30am and arrived in Huntington Beach so that I could collect some equipment, drop off a check, and do the necessary paperwork to become the new owner of N304GT. We're staying with Steve in Tustin, who's an amazing host. He prepared a most excellent grill feast for us this evening: beer, shrimp, peppers, steak, and more! I'm sooooo stuffed. Tomorrow morning we'll head to Hemet...

All alone in the night 03/06/2004 02:03 AM
Bad day. Two unscheduled meetings, one scheduled, but failed meeting, far too much email, far too much confusion, lost laptop, and to top it all off, an unnecessary ride back home to check whether I left the iron on.

The trams and stars don't care. They just travel on their paths, unaware of the problems of the insignificant little creatures that happen to be traveling along.

Night All

Ok.  Its officially now 19 straight hours at the keyboard.  The last database update for today is done.  The database is up to 14818 posts, 1309 rss urls and all seems well and good.  Am I 100% happy?  Of course not.  There's like a zillion and one things to do but "bit by bit" you know.

I'll be online and grinding on this all day tomorrow I suspect.

I remember dreaming that something was lost. I woke in the middle of the night, not knowing what or why I was seeking so desperately. Something was missing, and I could not say what.

Then I found it on the floor, where it had apparently fallen off the bed during the night.

I lifted it and put it back next to my pillow where it belongs, and fell back to a dreamless sleep. With a smile on my face.

I wonder... How long can one shirt keep her scent?

"Time passes, or rather doesn't pass. It is just there, solid as a coffee mug on the diner's counter. Time hangs like the reek of old tobacco in the hotel furniture". We all think we know Edward Hopper's images, even if we've never seen his paintings. Somehow the solidity of the world -- even the sky is like a wall -- is at odds with the transience of the people in it, however long they sit and stand and wait. Hopper's people, like Manet's figures , often appear consumed by the irreducible business of being. Hopper, too, would descend into his own silences, would delay himself in self-doubt...  They were literally rolling the old hippies (Baba Ram Das) around in wheelchairs athe 13th Digital Be-In on Saturday night.

I was there to talk about DLAs, and in typical fashion someone didn't show up, so they moved me up the schedule - which of course then meant that none of the people who came to hear me - could - as they thought I was coming on later.

The EFF, Creative Commons and danah boyd were there - too.

Well God Bless Michael Gosney anyway.  I got to see some old friends - such as Tony Bove (otherwise known as T-Bone) - pictured to the right, along with Brad DeGraf.

What a day and half a night!

What a day and half a night! 06/25/2004 07:09 AM

Well I have had one heck of day woke up this morning to agonizing back pain stretched for a while to try and get the back to loosen up. Went downstairs and found the meds the doc had stocked me up on. A OxyCooden and a Flexeril and 20 minutes later I was doing much better. After a 2 hour nap I am up trying to get some work done. Start off and play around with Top Style and Homesite deciding that I still like Hotmetal better for regular html stuff but Top Style is the ticket for CSS. Went ahead and paid for that over the web and no I don't have to deal with the trial nags.

About 2 this afternoon I decide I have the templates and the CSS cleaned up as much as it is gonna be on the MT3 Test site and decide to roll the production to MT3 along with a couple of other sites I run. Start backups of the 2.6 site along with downloading the databases etc. Between a run to the pharmacy dinner and messing with the kids. This site is now running MT3. I then decided to do some house cleaning on the Laptop as I have been abusing it for the past 2 months and needed to get all of the software I have bought along with all of the programs that I decided where not worth it de-installed and general file organization. Burn a couple of Master DVD's etc etc etc. So here I am at 1:45am Hawaiian time and I am ready to see what has happened in the tech world news. No wonder my wife calls me nuts sometimes.

But I will tell you one thing that I have been able to get done while recovering from spine surgery is that I am remote logging into all of my machines and getting them organized and sync'd. Wife said her PC has not run this good in a couple of years. Amazing what you can get done when you have nothing but time on your hands.

You can easily encrypt your traffic when attached to someone else’s network. 3. You can safely plug in at a hotel without other guests reading your email. 2. Eating on a Saturday night

Eating on a Saturday night 04/17/2005 06:52 PM
I've been doing a fairly good job of eating at lots of yummy places while here in Paris. Obviously I've been doing a fairly crappy job of documenting those meals, mostly out of sheer laziness. But last night we decided to eat in for a change, and to soften the repeated blows my wallet has taken during this trip. To turn the documentation tide, I present a photo of what we had for dinner on Saturday night. For our shopping, we decided we'd head to La Grande Epicerie Paris, the amazing food market at The Bon Marché -- one of Paris' grand department stores. We started in the wine section and being, in reality, poser gourmands and wine afficionados, we just grabbed two bottles that looked good and tried to escape before the woman started speaking to us in French about wine. My French class hasn't gotten to that level of interaction yet, and I wasn't up to the challenge. The take? A half bottle of Domaine Pradelle Crozes-Hermitage, 2002 (white) and a full size 2000 Saint-Joseph from Ferraton Père & Fils. Where they good? Seemed so to us. We're pretty much happy with anything from the Rhône. Next stop, the meat counter where we procured some mousse de canard. Somehow I managed to leave it out of the nice photo, so here it is just tossed on a plate. Then, on to the cheese counter! Here we were at a loss as there were just too many cheeses to choose from. Though I have French Cheeses: The Visual Guide to More Than 350 Cheeses from Every Region of France, it was no use among the vast selection (because I didn't have it with me and hadn't memorized it all, yet...). So I used my every-improving French to explain our predicament to Madame la Fromagière: (In French, sort of)Madame, we do not know the cheeses well of France. Is it possible that you make a selection of three cheeses for us to know more the cheese? Of course!, she replied, quite happy to be put to such a test. So she asked a few more questions and we ended up with a Brie de Meaux, a Comté Rivoire, and a bouton Charolai which was a button of a lovely aged goat cheese. They were all excellent, and Madame chose well for us. The Charolai was my favorite new cheese in a long time. We had also picked up a saucisson sec aux myrtilles, a dry sausage with a blueberry(!) coating. It was good, but didn't have much blueberry flavor. And of course, the requisite baguettes upon which to spread our yummy cheese and mousse. It was tasty and easy and I have to say, I want to do it again very soon!

To do Tuesday night in LA: RES screening

To do Tuesday night in LA: RES screening 07/12/2004 05:49 PM
OK, look -- even if this description of tomorrow night's monthly RES screening in Hollywood doesn't get you worked up, consider this: it's followed by an afterparty featuring an as-yet-unannounced secret Silverlake-based DJ duo who CONVERTED AN ICE CREAM TRUCK INTO A MOBILE DUB REGGAE SOUNDSYSTEM. That is the wickedest most baddassed thing I've ever heard of in my life at least the last three hours. Seriously, the program looks great too, and features:
special guest Geoff McFetridge who will share a retrospective of his video work including his music videos for the Avalanches, Simian, Plaid and his quirky spots for Jinro, X-Games, Burton and HP. The program will also include new short films from Suk & Koch, Brett Simon and Cheryl Dunn who will present the world premiere of Come Mute. Also screening: breaking new music videos for Placebo, Mr. Lif, Armand Van Helden, Supergrass, Los Amigos Invisibles, Colder and Floria Sigismondi's latest for the Cure.
Link to screening info, and listen to an archived live set from the ice-cream rockaz who shall not be named right here.
