04/27/2004 03:52 PMI can't see my house from here: WiFiMaps has interactive map of
wardriving database: Although nodedb has been around for quite a
while, offering geographic information system (GIS) mapping of access
points to graphical maps, WiFiMaps has a crisper display and shows the
results of wardriving and other sources. It's a good way to tell
whether anyone knows your network exists (mine hasn't been stumbled in
this database), and to find out how active Wi-Fi is in your
neighborhood or community....

Warchalking + Bluejacking =
Bluechalking?
12/08/2003 11:48 AMI suppose it was just a matter of time until someone did this, but
Mike Butcher of mbites has coined the term "Bluechalking" to describe
the practice of, "marking a Bluetooth symbol on sidewalks/pavements
and walls to indicate that someone with a Bluetooth-enabled phone is
often in the area, using the Bluetooth symbol [pictured at right] and
your phone's 'name'." Taking things even a step further, mbites reader
Edgar Gonzalez suggests that Bluejackers could also wear clothes with
the Bluetooth logo emblazoned on them, or (gasp!) even get the logo
tattooed on themselves. Read [Via The Red Ferret Journal]...

Time Wonders, Who Invented Warchalking?
and Other Howlers
11/10/2003 10:55 PMIn a short piece on warchalking, writer fails the test: The author of
this article in Time magazine finds a warchalk symbol (so he
says...I've yet to see one in the wild), and writes a good, short
piece about it. Good until he notes, Nobody knows who invented
warchalking. This reminds me of some of the lines from my favorite
canceled sci-fi animated series, Futurama, set 1,000 years in the
future. We're in the present, so I type who invented warchalking into
Google, and most of the matches explain precisely, as is well known,
Matt Jones invented it. He designed the sign, spread the meme, posted
a PDF with the graphics in it. I wrote about him and warchalking for
The New York Times, in fact. Hilariously, the 2nd match on Google
right now is this Time article. They have a lot of inbound links does
Time magazine. Time published a huge package of wireless stories about
a week ago. They come off as a little bland to me, because I know
everything that's in them. To an audience that knows little or nothing
about Wi-Fi, I'm sure this sounds much more exciting. But it reads
like circa 2002 newspaper coverage. The articles all have some missed
notes, too, mostly in the technical and statistical details. In an
article detailing business use of Wi-Fi, this statistic is thrown in:
a surprisingly small number of U.S. firms that have installed wi-fi
networks. Fewer than 5% of U.S. workers use them today, according to
an estimate by Gartner, a high-tech research firm. Unfortunately, the
author has confused five percent of workers with five percent of
companies. In this News.com article from a few days ago, the reporter
presents an array of statistics on business use, including overall
industry sales figures, and cites Jupitermedia's number: 57 percent of
businesses are using Wi-Fi already to some degree. (Damn, I even know
that magazine reporter; we worked on our college paper together.)
Given that companies like Microsoft and Novell have thousands of
workers -- basically everyone with a laptop -- using Wi-Fi all the
time all day everywhere on campus, that five percent of all workers is
the mobile, laptop-connected five percent. What percentage of U.S.
workers have computers at all? What percentage have laptops? That
would better contextualize the number. Maryanne Murray Buechner's
pieces, including this FAQ, are quite excellent, offering sensible
accurate advice...

French President Suggests Banning
Religious Symbols
12/17/2003 02:24 PM French President Suggests Banning Religious Symbols From the
Washington Post: "French President Jacques Chirac asked
parliament on Wednesday for a law banning Islamic head scarves and
other religious insignia in public schools ... 'Secularism is one of
the great successes of the Republic,' Chirac said in an address to the
nation. 'It is a crucial element of social peace and national
cohesion. We cannot let it weaken.' Chirac said he would push for a
law to be enacted in time for the school year that begins next autumn.
Islamic head scarves, Jewish skullcaps and large crucifixes would fall
under the ban.

Photoshop rips heavy cultural symbols
out of artists' phrasebook
Photoshop rips heavy cultural symbols
out of artists' phrasebook
01/08/2004 07:49 PMPhotoshop CS automatically detects images of US currency and prevents
the manipulation, copying and pasting of same. When my grandfather was
in hospital with Alzheimer's, one of his major causes of anxiety was
money, but we could soothe him by giving him $20 "bills" we ran off an
inkjet (fakes easily detected by anyone not suffering from senile
dementia). The images on the US dollar, being a product of the US
government, are not copyrightable.
The images on US currency are among the most ubiquitous in our
society. They are freighted with heavy symbolism, and have constituted
part of the artistic vocabulary of visual artists for generations.
Thanks to Adobe's decision to exercise prior restraint over its
customers -- to punish the innocent to get at the guilty -- currency
images have been ripped out of the photoshopper's artistic phrasebook.
If we ever needed an example of the idea that "architecture is
politics" and that "code is law," here it is.
And as if that wasn't enough, the scanning of all images for content
reportedly creates a massive performance hit in Photoshop, as your
CPU's cycles are hijacked to police your lawful activity.

Sherlock Holmes were to take a walk in these days of computer icons
and wireless communication he might deduce a connection between
mysterious chalk marks on the sidewalk and one of his own cases. A
circle with the letters ssid above it could mean… what?
Whatâ€TMs remarkable is that the secret
symbolic language of wardrivers today has roots in ancient gypsy marks
which were later adopted by tramps and hoboes. If you study the
history of gypsy symbols youâ€TMll discover a
vocabulary of secret marks made on gate posts to tell future beggars
whether the inhabitants of a home would provide food, shelter, money,
or if they were to be avoided or had a vicious dog. That ancient
language was far more complex than the simple chalk marks left by
Soviet spies in some pre-arranged public place like the side of a mail
box to indicate that the microfilm had been delivered to a secret drop
site. Now, though gypsies, who are more politely called Roma from
their language Romani, and hoboes are almost unknown in most places,
the art of communicating by secret chalk symbols is back.
Itâ€TMs the language of wardrivers, hunters in
search of free broad band wireless computer connections. The chalked
sidewalk circle with ssid over it stands for a closed node. The other
symbols (see illustration) are tips to wardrivers who look for an open
wireless computer connection that is not secure. Offices making use of
wireless technology to access bandwidth with portable computers often
fail to secure access with a password. Use of the bandwidth can be
stolen. That student sitting on a wall with his open laptop computer
outside an office building may not be doing homework. He may be
pirating use of an unsecured system inside. Compare: like that dusk to
dawn light in your driveway, though you may be paying for the
electricity bill, anyone in its range can make use of the light. Is
unauthorized tapping into this unsecured wireless access a form of
theft? California law forbids use of high technology to commit a
crime. Consider the old story of the Fool of Paris. A beggar held his
bit of bread in the smoke from a market
venderâ€TMs grill. The cook demanded money, but
the beggar hadnâ€TMt stolen anything. He had
simply savored the fragrance of the smoke. He
hadnâ€TMt stolen anything, hence no crime.
According to a user who calls himself Anonymous Hero if spammers can
freely use his address, he can freely tap into an open signal. Having
the dusk to dawn light on costs you no less if you are not using the
light to do night yard work, and if you have paid for a wireless
connection it costs you no less if you
arenâ€TMt logged on. This technological
innovation explains the recent police report of an arrest of a man who
was cruising the neighborhood with his laptop open and his pants down
in search of an open channel where he could access pornography without
paying for high speed bandwidth. Wardriving uses a portable computer,
wireless card, and GPS to mark the location of wireless access points.
The range of those signals is limited, but it is possible to outfit a
computer with a "cantenna," an antenna made using a light weight
Pringles tube to convert it to a WiFi disk. The Wardrivers cruise the
neighborhoods much like World War II Gestapo agents sniffing the
streets for the signals of clandestine radio operators. Once one is
located, its exact position is noted for future use. Hence the chalk
marks on the sidewalks. Shades of ET calling home with a gadget made
of a broken toy and an umbrella frame! The ingenuity of our local
techies is mind boggling. There are even maps revealing to aficionados
where the open nodules are located. Now if Sherlock Holmes had only
had a portable computer with a cantenna he might sniff into the
private files of that arch villain Professor Moriarty who thought,
erroneously, that he could hatch his plots safely in his penthouse
office lair without securing the node with an unbreakable password.
Elementary, my dear Dr. Watson: just look for the telltale chalk marks
left on the sidewalk by a local wardriver. Of course, though
Wardrivers are only seeking free broad band access, industrial spies
can use the open channels to break into private computer files and
steal company secrets. Now that California law applies. Just as a
window lets you see out, those on the outside can see in. Best not to
be exposed. Secure your wireless system "window" from prying eyes.
