Fiberlink Uses Boingo SDK

Fiberlink Uses Boingo SDK 11/11/2003 03:10 PM
Fiberlink, the remote access aggretator, said it will use Boingo’s SDK (software developer's kit) to build a client: The client will provide Wi-Fi and in the future 3G sniffing, connection and authentication. The deal also means that Fiberlink customers can access the hotspots that are part of Boingo’s service. In another deal from an aggregator, Infonet, which caters to large multinationals, will use hot spots that are part of GRIC's network. GRIC is an aggregator that appeals to distributed enterprises. I'm seeing an increasing number of announcements about aggregators like Fiberlink, iPass, and GRIC including as many hot spots into their networks as they can and making it easier for their customers to find and use the networks. They are aggressively trying to lock their customers into relying on them for Wi-Fi access before tons of roaming agreements happen between Wi-Fi operators, making the aggregators irrelevant. It will be interesting to watch what happens to these guys as the market evolves....

Fiberlink allows its client software adds 3G cellular to the list of roaming options for its secure client/server software users: Fiberlink's virtual private networking software lets enterprises tune policy management for what users can do and what methods of Internet access they can employ while away from the office. The latest version adds support for 3G networks. Fiberlink can opportunistically use dial-up, Wi-Fi, 3G, or wired networks as available and as the enterprise allows these particular networking methods. The software also ensures that a remote users has the latest anti-virus, firewall, and intrusion detection updates installed....

Free open WiFi on Tacoma-Washington
train, courtesy WiFi hacker
03/24/2005 08:15 PM
Cory Doctorow: A Seattle wireless hacker rides a commuter train from Tacoma every day with a battery-powered WiFi hotspot in his backpack that's linked up to the Internet with a 14.4 144k wireless modem. Catch his train and get free WiFi on your commute.
The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID "FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy 07/16/2004 04:50 PM
A few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's WiFi Seeker, a convenient keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced WiFi Spy is a rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform identically.

To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

Now Software and Parliant Corp. have announced that the former's Now Up-to-Date & Contact calendar/address book tool and the latter's PhoneValet Message Center are now integrated. The combined solution won a Best of Show award at Macworld Conference & Expo Boston, which wraps up on Thursday. The Remote Activity List feature allows you to call your phone, enter a password and have PhoneValet read your day's events from Now Up-to-Date. This fall, Now Software expects to make available integrated dialing, which will automatically call someone when you click the phone icon in their Now Up-to-Date record.

Earthlink Integrates Boingo Software

Earthlink Integrates Boingo Software 07/12/2004 02:24 PM
EarthLink will build Boingo's Wi-Fi software into its TotalAccess package: TotalAccess has been EarthLink's key to user happiness from its introduction about a decade ago. Originally, it handled the nasty bits of finding the latest phone numbers and then dialing and connecting. Now, it's broadened to include anti-spam, anti-popup, and anti-scam software--and Wi-Fi. EarthLink's founder and chairman, Sky Dayton, also founded and runs Boingo Wireless, and the two companies have had a partnership for some time. The integration of Boingo's Wi-Fi management software into TotalAccess makes it that much easier for EarthLink's five million subscribers to choose to use Wi-Fi. Boingo, by the way, used to note over 6,000 access points under contract with about 3,300 live; in this press release they say 9,000 under contract. We're on the verge of seeing a large bump in network sizes from aggregators to judge by this number and details provided recently by GoRemote and iPass....

flickr integrates Creative Commons

flickr integrates Creative Commons 06/29/2004 11:32 PM

flickr, a photo management/social network/community/chat service just integrated Creative Commons so you can choose a license for a photo when you upload this. This is awesome. flickr integrates photos into your chat so that you can plop photos into a chat room from your shoe-box and copy photos into your shoe-box from a conversation. People can comment on the photos, etc. It's probably the best integration of photos in conversation that I've ever seen and now with Creative Commons, it should make feel safer and more fluid.

Nice job Stewart!

04/05/2005 03:56 AM
Opera has just announced that its popular internet browser will be integrated into the upcoming release of the Adobe Creative Suite. Neowin exclusively reported several weeks ago, that Adobe planned to launch Photoshop CS2 this coming May. Creative Suite 2 products (including GoLive) will use the Opera browsing engine to preview output.

"Adobe Creative Suite 2 is a complete design environment that accelerates publishing workflows for print, the Web, and mobile platforms," said John Brennan, senior vice president of Creative Professional products at Adobe. "The advanced rendering technologies and open standards provided by Opera's advanced Web browser ensure that designers using Adobe Creative Suite 2 can create and realize their best work, for output online or to the latest handheld devices."

Adobe will make heavy use of Opera Small-Screen Rendering technology, which allows for simulated output of content on different screen sizes. (Proving very useful for web designers and graphic artists who today, must create platform-independent content)
