Interoperability is Troublesome
Interoperability is Troublesome
12/15/2003 02:08 PM ">Despite best efforts from industry standard groups,
interoperability among Wi-Fi products is hit or miss these days: Not
all products are certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance and some vendors are
cutting corners. For example, they may not do a great job of
implementing the mechanism that asks an 802.11g chip to fall back to
802.11b. New security features and the plethora of chips available
increase the complications in making all devices compatible. I don't
imagine the compatibility issue will get any better as we move into
the future because more upgrades to the standard continue to be
developed....

03/06/2004 01:49 AMThe Register reports on a story that ran in a magazine called
Computing Which? that details failures to get standard Wi-Fi gear from
different manufacturers to interoperate: The editors tried to set up a
Linksys 802.11g router and a Netgear bridge but couldn't get the two
devices to interact. Eventually one Netgear help desk agent told the
writers the products could be incompatible. It doesn’t appear that the
original story is online so it's hard to know more about this trial.
It sounds as though the aim of the report was to test how easy or
difficult it is to set up wireless networks. The writers concluded
that it's too hard to use. It would be unfortunate if the industry has
a hard time attracting additional users because the products are
inoperable and difficult to use....

Using .NET Assembly (Interoperability
with COM) in PHP
11/06/2002 11:36 PMThe .NET Framework is a new computing platform that simplifies
application development in the highly distributed environment of the
Internet. The .NET Framework is designed to provide a consistent
object-oriented programming environment, a code-execution environment
that minimizes software deployment and versioning conflicts, which
guarantees safe execution of code and to build all communication on
industry standards to ensure that code based on the .NET Framework can
integrate with any other code.
PHP has built in functionality which uses COM objects, using the COM
interop feature of .NET we shall create a wrapper around the .NET
assembly and use it in PHP (in fact you could use the same steps to
use .NET assembly for VB6 or any other COM applications) -- Jayesh

products such as the UAN are becoming a reality, interoperability is
no longer such a weighty issue. Or is it?

Interoperability, Compliance to be
Challenging
12/04/2003 02:28 PMThe 802.11 standards groups have full plates and they will struggle to
ensure that all their efforts interoperate: The development of
802.11e, the quality of service mechanism, seems to be the trickiest
and will require repeated upgrades. Problems are already surfacing.
Vendors are adding their own bells and whistles, like higher speed
offerings, as a way to differentiate or to speed up the upgrade
process. Those extras create interoperability problems. Even without
the extras, vendors struggle to comply with the standards. Frank
Hanzlik, the managing director of the Wi-Fi Alliance, told me recently
that about one quarter of all 802.11b products--the most mature of the
standards--submitted for approval fail certification initially.
Products going through certification of the newer standard fail at an
even higher rate....

working with both platforms is going to become the norm. This article

09/12/2004 07:11 AMRecommendation for Search Interoperabilityhttp://ww
w.cio.gov/documents/ICGI/recommendation.htmlThe U.S.
Federal Government should adopt a search service standard to enhance
interoperability among networked systems that aid in the discovery of
and access to government information. The adopted search service
standard should be the ISO 23950 international standard, thereby
providing a high degree of interoperability across many communities of
practice and types of data and information holdings (see section 5,
ISO 23950 Overview , below). This recommendation follows existing law
and policies of the U.S. Federal Government, positioning the standard
search service as a supplement to other search mechanisms as may be
needed for reasons other than broad scale interoperability. [

You don't own your iTunes, they 0wn you
08/22/2004 07:30 AMCory Doctorow: Good blog post on why Apple iTunes
DRM -- and other DRM systems -- that convey the message "you don't
own the music you buy, you merely license it," make for such
unsatisfying experiences.
We are outraged at the theft of a bicycle. We would be astonished to
find bank executives having lunch on our patio, (“actually, if
you read the contract, you will see we own this part of your house-the
whole yard actually. Hank's gone to get his barbeque.”) We would
be unhappy to get a note from J. Crew telling us that the expiry date
for your new shoes has been moved forward and that we must cease and
desist in their public display. No, as we understand and feel it, we
own these things as if ownership were outright and in perpetuity.
Ownership has this quality in part because the things we own are part
of what Goffman would call our identity kit--they help define who we
are, both inwardly and outwardly. Strip us of these things, and our
lives become, as Lear put it, “cheap as beasts.”
Naturally, we regard the most “telling” of our possessions
as if they were strategic resources and we defend them as governments
do. Our security depends on their security.

New iTunes
04/28/2004 02:26 PMI've been playing with the new version of iTunes for the past hour
or two and the first thing that strikes me is all those annoying
little arrows that link to the music store. I could perhaps see this
being useful every once in a while, if I think to myself "I wonder if
there's a new record by Mountain Goats?" but I can't see doing that
more than once or twice a month. Why not put a "Look up in the iTunes
Music Store" right-click menu option instead? The weirdest part is
that my own purchased music has links to the store... so I can
purchase them again? I'm turning that off asap but I still wonder
why the arrows are turned on by default. Perhaps, as Tom just told me, to blur the lines
between "your music" and "the store music for sale" which would
certainly increase sales.
The party mix is weird looking, interface-wise, I wonder if it's
using any sort of BPM analysis to arrange songs next to each other. I
can't really tell the difference between that and random shuffle at
this point.
Andre pointed out
compilations to me, which I didn't notice before either. It appears
that they're reading compilation info from ID3 tags now, and putting
albums by various artists in the Artists browse list, which is kinda
useful.

DVD Jon becomes iTunes Jon
01/06/2004 01:14 PMJon Johansen, the Norwegian programmer who cracked DVD encryption, has
effectively done the same with iTunes DRM-ed music.
"We're about to find out what Apple really thinks about Fair Use,"
Johansen told The Register via email. Johansen cracked iTunes DRM
scheme in November by releasing code for a small Windows program that
dumps the stream to disk in raw AAC format. This raw format required
some trivial additions to convert it to an MP4 file that could be
played on any capable computer.
But in the best Apple ease-of-use tradition, Johansen has now made
this
completely seamless, integrating it with the VideoLAN streaming free
software project.

03/24/2005 11:50 AMJon Johansen’s PyMusique application which allowed purchasing

PyMusique does not write out DRM to the song, leaving it unprotected
and free to be used on an unlimited number of machines. Johansen says
he wrote the program to allow Linux users to buy music from iTunes
music store, the ability to move the music from machine to machine
without the DRM is just a nice side-effect. Looks like this serve and
