Be Careful Where You Build

Be Careful Where You Build

Be Careful Where You Build 03/08/2004 11:21 PM

For those of you who were deprived of this early childhood ritual, allow me to provide a bit of background. The song tells the tale of two men. The so-called "wise man" built his house on some sort of a rock, evidently a first-century precursor to modern concrete. Meanwhile, the "foolish man" was constructing his home on a foundation of sand. The song ends with each of these guys getting the results any grown-up would expect them to get. After all, if you're going to put your building on a bunch of sand, you should expect it to float away when the rains come.

Be Careful What You Believe In

Be Careful What You Believe In 03/14/2005 05:38 PM
Beliefs are powerful, because they are not only the basis for our decisions, but also filters through which we view the world. We are constantly bombarded with huge volumes of information from our senses. Our eyes take in a full 120 degree sweep, much of this at a very high resolution, our ears are constantly responding to sounds, our sense of smell always probing the air around us for food or threats. The vast majority of this torrent of information is effectively ignored. Based on the information we get from the senses, we form a model of the world and it is this model, which forms the basis for our decisions. Absolute truth is out there, but in our heads everything is to a greater or lesser extent an interpretation. For any set of sensory data more than one interpretation is possible, and it is our beliefs, implicit and explicit, which we use to decide between the interpretations available.

Valotalo

« Valotalo by Jouko Kärkkäinen in the Forces of Light show in Plague Park. »

So, in one of those cases of 'be careful what you wish for', I have joined the ranks of those who wake up in the darkness and find their way to an office somewhere in the metropolis. It always sucks being the new person having to ask where the coffee, bathroom and coke machine are as well as having that dazed and glazed look as you're trying to remember the names of everyone you were introduced to. There is no shortage of stuff to do so I doubt I'll be bored. I'll have to try to keep from inflicting pictures of puppy cuteness on everyone, too. :)

On one of the metalink sites yesterday morning I noticed modern pooch which is a new doggie blog that could be a bit of light entertainment. On the side of not so light entertainment there is finland for thought [or lack thereof], the new blog by the inimitable "Mr. X", the American Libertarian who, unsurprisingly, finds plenty to gripe about in Finland. I encourage the Finns to abuse his lack of clue with enthusiasm. :)

A Careful Look At Offshoring

A Careful Look At Offshoring 12/22/2003 03:11 AM
Yet another article that takes a look at the "offshoring trend", but this one actually takes a step back to put the whole thing in perspective. From a historical vantage point, this trend doesn't seem all that different that past trends where products made in the US were eventually outsourced. The article quotes Walter Mondale from twenty years ago, when he was worried about chip production going to Japan, saying: "What are our kids supposed to do? Sweep up around Japanese computers and sell McDonald's hamburgers the rest of their lives?" Instead, what happened was that cheap chips resulted in a technology boom that certainly helped the US economy quite a bit over the next two decades. The article also points out what we've been saying here all along: the rush to outsource is a bit shortsighted for most companies. Those who are only looking at the salary aspect of it, don't realize that there are many more costs involved, and many are already starting to regret the decision to outsource. However, in some areas, it clearly does make sense to outsource, but the number of jobs that will go overseas each year is a very very small number - and pales when compared to the number of jobs lost each year naturally through layoffs and company closings. Finally, the article points out that, when done right, offshoring is a net positive for our economy - and has been historically. This doesn't mean that it doesn't make life hard for some people who lost their jobs. However, instead of thinking up protectionist plans, the US should be making an effort to train these displaced employees for better jobs in sectors that need them.

Be Careful What You Google

Be Careful What You Google 02/19/2004 11:22 AM

It might just get your mother arrested.

According to an LA Times story (requires registration) a 17 year old kid in California did a Google search on his own name and found himself on a missing kids list. Turns out that in 1989 his dad was given custody of him after a divorce, but apparently mom wasn't happy with the situation, so soon after she skipped the country (Canada) during a visit, with the kid.

The dad notified authorities, but mom was successful in evading the Canadian authorities, and was living peacefully with their son as a legal immigrant in the LA area.

The teen, according to the U.S. Marshals Service, told a teacher about what he discovered on a website devoted to missing children. That set in motion a federal investigation that ended with the arrest of his mother last week and ignited hopes among his father's family of a reunion they feared might never happen.

Now the traumatized 17 year old is in the custody of the LA County Children and Family Services Department, waiting to be reunited with the dad he doesn't know. Mom was arrested and is awaiting extradition to the Great White North to face child abduction charges.

Ok, how many have googled your own name, and actually found something?
