Review: Pioneer DVR-107D DVD±R/RW drive

Review: Pioneer DVR-107D DVD±R/RW drive 03/08/2004 11:21 PM

CDFreaks has posted another thorough review, this time for Pioneer's new DVR-107D dual format 8x recordable DVD drive. One of the most popular drives on the market right now, does CDFreaks think it deserves its success? Here's a snippet from the review:

The main positive points
The drive supports 8x DVD-Writing for both DVD-R and DVD+R and it support 4x DVD-ReWriting for both DVD-RW and DVD+RW. And it’s pretty fast, a full DVD-Disc is written at around 8 minutes and 30 seconds at 8x speed. And the writing quality is very good for most types of discs. The build quality of the drive also feels good. It also supports reading and writing of 99 minutes discs.

The main negative points
We think that many will find it annoying that no 4x DVDR discs works at 8x writing speed and that few 8x DVDR discs works at 8x. We did also expect the media compatibility to be almost perfect since it’s almost perfect with the older DVR-106 drive, but there were quite a few discs that the drive was unable to detect. Another serious issue is the CD-RW writing problems; Many drives have problems reading the discs written by the Pioneer DVR-107D and the CD-RW discs becomes unusable after few times of use. And it has problems reading less than perfect discs, especially pressed DVD discs seems to be a problem, another reading issue is that reading DVD-RAM discs does not work in most cases. And it has very weak backup capabilities for both Games and music discs.
You can check out the entire review over at the CDFreaks web site.

If you thought all Yet Another Flash Drives were the same, leave it to Ars Technica to prove you (us) wrong with a hugely informative (if pedantic) review of 10 different USB 2.0 Hi-speed flash memory drives, with benchmarks, read/write tests, and even an experiment involving two flash drives and RAID 0. It's a great place to start if you're interested in any of the drives, with include units from PNY, SanDisk, Mushkin, SimpleTech, FujiFilm (a write-speed beast), Verbatim, Transcend (the overall winner), and Iomega (who did very well all around).

Neowin Review : Seagate 5Gb Pocket Hard
Drive
03/23/2005 08:49 PM
In the <a href="http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=27461&category=ma in&highlight=">second part</a> of our look at some of the portable gear Seagate are offering currently, we've taken a look at the company's smaller option for users : a 5 GB, pocket hard drive.
<ul>"USB: it's everywhere. Like a plague amongst motherboard designers, the USB socket has become ubiquitous with the modern day computer. Asides from devices like printers and mice, USB devices range from the quirky to the rather useful. Arguably one of the most useful groups of devices on the market today is the portable USB drive.

High speed, reliable and small, they've virtually killed the floppy disk drive giving computer users a better way to store and transfer their files. In a world of bulging PowerPoint presentations and growing media libraries, the question of storage on the go is one that has hit most of us. Perhaps, we've found an answer."</ul>
After the initial amazement that they could pack in 5 GB's worth of hard drive into such a small space, we looked deeper into an exceptionally well designed portable device. For the full review, follow the link below.

Neowin Review: Maxtor DiamondMax 10
250GB Hard Drive
03/28/2005 12:38 PM
After our very own Tom Graham reviewed some <a href="http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=27461&category=ma in" target="_Blank">portable</a> <a href="http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=27605&category=ma in" target="_Blank">hard</a> <a href="http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=296533" ; target="_Blank">drives</a>, today we'll have a look at a Desktop counterpart by Maxtor. The massive <b>250GB DiamondMax 10</b>. As large hard drives are becoming of an increased importance, we will also cover a small guide so you know what to look for when buying a new hard drive.
<ul>After plugging everything in, the drive was visible to my onboard Promise RAID/SATA Interface controller&#8217;s BIOS. In here, you can setup the &#8220;bootability&#8221; of drives and decide whether you want your hard drives to work in a RAID environment or simply to work alone; I decided to skip the RAID options and work alone. Maxtor offer a setup of tools to help you format the drive; MaxBlast, a piece of hard drive management software for Windows by Maxtor, for Maxtor drives.

The first thing you may notice, or not, is the noise level of the hard drive while in operation &#8211; it is, to say the least, very quiet. I found noise only noticeable whilst doing sustained file transfers between itself and my DiamondMax 9. I felt the drive was probably about twice as quiet as the DiamondMax 9; serious credit to Maxtor&#8217;s &#8220;Quiet Drive&#8221; technology, the Fluid Dynamic Bearings, and the fact that the spindle runs at 7,200 RPM (Western Digital has a line of hard drives running at a noisy 10K RPM).</ul>
Will this massive drive keep up to par with the other drives available? Namely the 10K RPM Western Digital Raptor drives? On to the review...

Portable Hard Drive

Neowin Review : Seagate 100Gb USB 2.0
Portable Hard Drive
03/14/2005 06:26 PM
Harddrives : a critical part of any personal computer. They store our personal data, files, operating systems and much more. Over the last decade, the industry has gone through some major changes both in terms of the hardware and the companies involved.

Seagate is one of an increasingly small number of harddrive vendors to stick through tough times and keep on producing good gear. Founded in 1979, the company stayed at the forefront of the industry making the first 5.25" harddrive, the first 7,200 RPM diskdrive, and the first fiber channel interface disk drive.

<strong>Today, we're looking at a portable harddrive from Seagate</strong>. It's basically a small (2.5") harddrive packed inside a strong shell with a high speed, USB 2 adaptor on rear; it's also got a bright blue LED light for good measure. Seagate offer two version of the drive; a 40gig version and a 100gig version - we looked at the 100gig version. Read on the review!

Memory Reading Hard Drive
06/30/2004 12:37 PM

DriveProVP300_2.jpg imageThe Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for only the price of additional hard drives.

pioneer_dvj-x1.jpg imagePioneer has announce the DVJ-X1, the first (to my knowledge) DVD-based turntable for real-time video mixing straight from source discs. It's got all the normal tomfoolery you'd expect from a digital turntable, like no-tempo-loss reversals, Hot Cues (instantly recall up to three points on the disc), and Emergency Loop functions for when you drop the biscuit and need a quick 4 beat loop. Plus you can save all your wave data and cue and loop points to an SD card and recall your set later. Looks rather hot - expect to see it in an audio retailer near you real quick like.

Be sure to check out the Video Demo, too; it looks like a blast to play with. (Thanks, Chris!)

pioneer_dvdrdl.jpg imageThis is a tad late, but last week, Pioneer announced the world's first hybrid video recorder with DVD-R DL (Dual Layer) support. The "DVR-555H" has an estimated 80,000 yen price tag, comes with a 250GB hard drive, and can accept image files by way of USB for writing to DVD. Only PictBridge cameras are supported in this fashion, though, so it won't exactly bring enough functionality to sneeze at.

The rest of the sets are standard IR headsets that get about 29 hours (!!) of life on a few AAA batteries. They also support 12.24-Giggermunks Encoding and 9.10 Pioneer Surroundfield SussAround for 12Mbps megaspark activity.
