E-Mail and Web Server Downtime

E-Mail and Web Server Downtime

E-Mail and Web Server Downtime 03/08/2004 11:21 PM

As some of you might have noticed, currently ActiveWin.com e-mail is unavailable. In addition, throughout the day the website may sporadically be unavailable for 10-15 minute intervals. We apologize for the inconvenience; however, we are in the process of resolving issues and undergoing maintenance before our migration to Exchange 2003 and Windows 2003 Server within the next few weeks. Thank you for your patience, and we hope to have everything running smoothly as soon as possible.

For years, SMTP server software was used to send and receive e-mail communications. These older servers, usually freeware, have created many delivery challenges. Most of the time, marketers, CEO’s and even CMO’s are completely unaware of these issues. The owners of ActivSoftware, in central New York, introduced a worldwide challenge to prove their software system (http://www.activsoftware.com/xms) is one of a kind in the email industry. I've just discovered that my mail server was being overzealous in rejecting messages... I've tweaked the configuration and things should now be ok. If you've sent me an email in the last week or so and you've seen rejects, please try sending again, this time it should work (otherwise leave a comment in this entry). Thanks.

Changes:
The MailStore implementation for the IMAP service has been improved, optimizing simultaneous access to mailboxes. It is now possible to map a single user account to the namespace of other users. A minor bug in the SMTP server initialization routine has been fixed. The MailEvent API has changed and now requires one additional argument with the user name for creating a mail event.

Look Ma, No Downtime

Look Ma, No Downtime 02/15/2003 05:35 PM

It seems that the transfer to my new host, TotalChoice Hosting went well. I haven't run into any problems and overall I'm quite happy with the service. As soon as I finish transferring over a few more domains from my old host, I'll be cancelling my service with them. My new hosting plan gives me a lot of flexibility and lots of features. It's a reseller plan that I'll be using with my web design business, but I may set up some kind of blog hosting or something along those lines. We'll see.

If you are reading this through a news aggregator, this paragraph is for you. I have noticed through my error logs that a lot of people are still requesting the old URLs of my RSS feed (either /index.xml or /data/readinged.xml). This still gives you my current RSS feed because the error script that drives this whole site sees what you are requesting and gives you the new URL. I would like to eventually remove support for the old URL's, so if your aggregator is requesting the old location, I'd appreciate you switching to the new one (http://www.readinged.com/blog/rss/latest).

Ready for Some Downtime?

Ready for Some Downtime? 04/20/2004 04:55 PM

A researcher in Milwaukee has discovered a nasty exploit of the TCP protocol that could give hackers a way to knock out entire segments of the Internet's backbones.

The vulnerability was discovered by a Paul "Tony" Watson, a computer researcher in Milwaukee, who found a way to remotely reset network connections via a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. The flaw affects both TCP and BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). BGP needs a persistent TCP connection between peers in order to route packets, so if the routers are reset, BGP goes into hibernation and traffic stops.

Sequence numbers in the packet headers usually make this exploit infeasible, but Tony has apparently figured out a way to guess the right sequence numbers in 4 tries. The nasty part is that the exploit is possible due to the design of TCP itself, not just some broken software. This one could be ugly.
