Grain farming pushed back 10000 years

Grain farming pushed back 10000 years 06/27/2004 05:45 PM
Farming origins gain 10,000 years. Humans made their first tentative steps towards farming 23,000 years ago, much earlier than previously thought. Stone Age people in Israel collected the seeds of wild grasses some 10,000 years earlier than previously recognised, say experts.

06/24/2005 06:34 PM
Cory Doctorow: This well-developed project from Columbia University walks through the realities, possibilities and constraints of multi-storey, urban, high-rise farming:
What is proposed here that differs radically from what now exists is to scale up the concept of indoor farming, in which a wide variety of produce is harvested in quantity enough to sustain even the largest of cities without significantly relying on resources beyond the city limits. Cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and other large farm animals seem to fall well outside the paradigm of urban farming. However, raising a wide variety of fowl and pigs are well within the capabilities of indoor farming. It has been estimated that it will require approximately 300 square feet of intensively farmed indoor space to produce enough food to support a single individual living in an extraterrestrial environment (e.g., on a space station or a colony on the moon or Mars)(35).

MuVo2 FM Joins Fruit Brigade

MuVo2 FM Joins Fruit Brigade 09/01/2004 12:01 PM

The iPod mini colors strike again, this time bringing down Creative's MuVo2, now available in five, easy-to-digest pastels. Well, and black. And it's possible white isn't technically a pastel, but still, these are clearly iPod inspired. The new MuVo2 version also will have a 5GB hard drive, instead of the previous 4GB version, and will now include a built-in FM receiver.

So far they're Japan only, going for around $250. The last MuVo2, if you'll remember, was almost universally adopted so that it could be broken open and its 4GB Microdrive scavenged for use in digital cameras. I would bet there is something - the lack of a proper Compact Flash interface, for instance - in these new models that will prevent that, but until an intrepid photographer hammers a new one open, we'll just have to wait and see. (Thanks, Jon!)

Fruit porn sparks outrage

Fruit porn sparks outrage 09/01/2004 01:43 PM
Xeni Jardin: BoingBoing reader Alex points to this purportedly XXX image (organic teabagging?) ripped from the Kama Fruitra, and says, "This Ananova story contains images of Maoam fruit wrappers which appear to show fruit in sexual positions. A Catholic college has complained. What is interesting is that Haribo doesn't seem to have denied this interpretation, calling the packaging 'very racy,' and saying, 'The new wrapping is certainly fruitier than the old. But we have not had any other complaints. In fact until now the feedback has all been positive."

Link to news story. Link to Maoam website with barely legal hothothot fruity porn wrapper pics.

Update: BoingBoing reader ix says, "The reader quoted in your post says, A Catholic college has complained. That's not quite right. It seems, as this site says, that it has been a joke by graduates (abiturienten) of a catholic school (jesuitenkolleg zu sankt blasien - really, more a highschool than a college) back in March. Not really hot this story, but a German magazine made it a story again a couple of day ago (more on that here: Link)."
