Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge

Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Bridge 06/17/2005 07:13 PM

For most graphic artists, Adobe's applications are their bread and butter. Adobe Creative Suite 2 recently hit the streets, but is it worth paying the price to upgrade? We have a comprehensive look at Photoshop CS2 along with Bridge, an image browser which "connects" the Creative Suite 2 applications.

In Photoshop 7, Adobe added a file browser to Photoshop and let it chill for two versions seeing if it would get better with age (it didn't). It was a good idea but weird in Photoshop, a really document-centric program. Now, they've taken it out of Photoshop, made it an independent program to act as a connector between apps much like say, a concrete passageway or a road above water.

It makes a lot more sense this way since it was really out of place as a floating window inside the Photoshop interface. Adobe has added a favorites and collections pane in addition to the basic file system browsing, chocked it full of features to interact with other Adobe apps and added an interactive thumbnail zoom that works much like iPhoto's.

Of course, there are plenty of other apps on both Windows and Mac OS X that perform the same function (GraphicConverter represent!). Is the combination of some spiffy new features in Photoshop CS2 and the new Bridge enough to make an upgrade worthwhile? There's only one way to find out...

Cracking Iranian codes

Cracking Iranian codes 06/15/2004 10:17 AM

Bruce Schneier has written an interesting article discussing the accusation of Ahmed Chalabi of informing Iran that the US had broken its codes and when Iran knew that the NSA was cracking their codes. He digs into the history of Crypto AG, the NSA and Iran. He links to an article about Hans Buehler, the Crypto AG salesman who was arrested by Iran in 1992 on suspicion that Crypto AG had installed back doors in its encryption machines. There is no conclusion, but this story reminds me of Crytonomicon and the interesting world of information, misinformation and spying.

Return-codes vs. Exceptions, Part 129

Return-codes vs. Exceptions, Part 129 05/24/2004 12:27 PM
Doug Ross, CTO of BadBlue (which sells a mean web server that runs PHP), has a nice recap of the debate on how to handle errors. Should we use error codes or exceptions? Doug weaves a nice story around several people's opinions. I totally agree with Doug with regards to real-time software (you want to handle the error as soon as possible with an error code).

However that's not the way I would want to write financial code nowadays. With the relational databases we now use, I'm more likely to throw an exception and perform a database rollback in the exception handler. I think that database advances with commit/rollback make resource cleanup sufficiently trivial for us to use generic exceptions.
