Newsweek's Focus on Wireless

Newsweek's Focus on Wireless 05/30/2004 11:46 AM
Newsweek covers all forms of wireless networking and cellular telecom across several stories this week: The package of articles opens with Steven Levy musing about why people find wireless technology so compelling. You can distill his interesting and accurate overview of the field into this sentence: The ease of distribution becomes a force in itself, pushing networks to handle more bandwidth. It's a restating of Metcalfe's Law, in part: The power of the network increases exponentially by the number of computers connected to it. Therefore, every computer added to the network both uses it as a resource while adding resources in a spiral of increasing value and choice. Wireless networks require substantial innovation and expense in developing the basic technology, but then each additional node has substantially less cost associated than with increasing a wireline network, whether in an office or across a city. Wireless reduces the friction in accelerating the density of network, and that rollercoaster ride into exponential power is where speed freaks get their high. A bar at the right top of the article links to the several other pieces in the package, but I'll point out two notable pieces: The Wireless World offers a city-by-city rundown of some of the more interesting uses of wireless data, including entire towns blanketed with Wi-Fi and Austin, Texas's intense density of free hotspots. The other article to note is A Few Who Got Us Here, which puts NYCwireless co-founder Anthony Townsend in the first position alongside the founder of BlackBerry's maker Research in Motion, and a VP at Samsung....

Is VeriSign Up To Running The .Net
Registry?

Is VeriSign Up To Running The .Net
Registry?
02/05/2005 09:45 PM
Later this year, a company will be selected to run the .net domain on the internet. VeriSign has operated the .net registry since 2001 alongside the .com registry. However, exactly how certain it is that the company will be able to take on the registry for another term is unknown. VeriSign critics have highlighted their poor track record on certain issues as a sound reasons as to why the company should not be allowed to run the .net registry again. In 2003, VeriSign introduced a controversial and short lived "Site Finder" redirection service for all un-registered .com and .net domains. ICANN forced VeriSign to remove the service and VeriSign in turn sued ICANN in a case that was dismissed in late 2004. Yet as NTK summarizes, two security researchers have another reason as to why VeriSign shouldn't be running the registry.

"Everyone else likes to worry about Google's gathering conflict of interests, but Verisign's S.P.E.C.T.R.E.-level skills still take some beating. This week, orbiting crypto analysts Ian Grigg and Adam Shostock belatedly pointed out to ICANN that perhaps VeriSign couldn't trusted with .net. Why? Well, VeriSign these days offers both top level domains and SSL certificate authentication. They also, with their NetDiscovery service - sell ISPs a complete service for complying with law enforcement surveillance orders. So, if an American court demands an ISP wiretap its customers, and the ISP turns that order over to VeriSign to do the dirty: well, VeriSign can now fake any domain you want, and issue any temporary fake certificate, allowing even SSLed communications to be monitored." (Complete message here)

VeriSign have yet to respond to these criticisms. So far, ICANN, the body that oversees the .Net registry, has received five applications to run it; Verisign's four year contract with ICANN expires on 30 June 2005. VeriSign had seemed highly likely to win the bid until it emerged that CORE++, a global consortium of companies, had quietly placed a bid for the contract. Core claim to have the backing of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Systems_Consortium&qu ot;>Internet Systems Consortium, a non-profit company that makes central internet software like BIND. The company seem reasonably determined to take over from VeriSign, who are experiencing their first ever challenge to their monopoly of running top-level domains. ICANN will announce the winning bid in the coming months.

VeriSign Loses Out To ICANN

VeriSign Loses Out To ICANN 08/27/2004 02:00 PM
Not even bothering to let the case go to trial, a judge has simply tossed out VeriSign's lawsuit against ICANN with a ruling that can be summarized as "you guys have to be kidding me, if you think I'm going to buy that." Still, VeriSign could refile the case, and there really are some interesting legal issues raised by the case, concerning how much power ICANN really does (or should) have.

Sex.com And VeriSign Settle Many Years
Later
04/20/2004 12:47 PM
The Sex.com legal fights started soon after we started Techdirt almost seven years ago - and we've followed the case on an ongoing basis. First, there was the battle over the domain name itself, and whether it belonged to the guy who originally registered it, or the person who forged some documents to take it away. However, the more interesting element of the case was always the legal battle with VeriSign (really, at the time, Network Solutions) over whether or not they were responsible for handing over the domain without any proof that it should have been done. Last year, the Court of Appeals ruled that VeriSig n could be sued for transferring the domain without permission of the rightful owner, basically admitting that domains are property of those who registered them - and not simply under the complete control of VeriSign/Network Solutions. Now, realizing that put them in a difficult position, it looks like VeriSign has agreed to settle the lawsuit with Sex.com - though, details aren't given - suggesting that this legal battle may finally be over.

Sony PSP: Good Inventory Planning, Poor

Sony PSP: Good Inventory Planning, Poor
Marketing Strategy?
03/31/2005 02:52 PM
These days, when a hot new gadget hits the market, you almost expect it to sell out and be hard to find for the first month or so. Apparently, that's not happening with the new Sony PSP handheld gaming device. Analysts are saying that it's selling well, but not selling out. From the sound of it, Sony may have done a good job accurately forecasting demand and supplying retailers with a reasonable number of the devices. That's the good news. However, since the expectation is that it will sell out, does it appear to be a negative for Sony that it didn't sell out -- even if it's more an aspect of inventory management, rather than device popularity?

Spider-Man marketing by Blog

Spider-Man marketing by Blog 01/01/2004 05:07 PM

Sony Pictures has created a s et of Spider-Man 2 blog templates for LiveJournal and Blogger. They’ve also put together background images that can be used on any other Web page or blog.

Some companies are notorious for squashing fans that use copyrighted characters or images on their own sites. But Sony, realizing that fans create buzz, is not only allowing this practice, but embracing it. By some accounts, the Spider-Man fan base online is the reason that the first Spider-Man movie was made in the first place, so Sony obviously realizes what an important role their fans play. By creating these easy-to-install templates, Sony is essentially getting free sponsorship placement on any blog that chooses to use them.

Two gripes, through. One. it’s not spelled "Web Logs," it’s one word "weblogs." And where are the Movable Type and TypePad templates? If Sony wants to commission me to create MT templates, I’m available.

04/18/2004 12:32 AM

I'm lazily stealing this post from Rick Bruner:

MarketingSherpa has called for nominations for the best marketing blog:

We're launching MarketingSherpa's Reader's Choice Award for Best Blogs on the subjects of marketing, advertising and PR. A blog must have been regularly updated for at least the past 90 days to be considered. Winners get a review and hotlink from our site, plus a MarketingSherpa Blog Star t-shirt.

To enter a Blog you author, or are a fan of, email our Managing Editor Anne Holland by April 30th. Then we'll collect reader votes in May (hey it's a great way to get traffic to your Blog), and announce winners in June. Please put "Best Blog" in the subject line of your nomination email and send to anneh@marketingsherpa.com.

With all due respect, if MarketingVox (aka MarketingFix, Up2Speed, MarketingWonk and MarketingWhatever) fails to win this, there is no justice in the world. Lots of other marketing blogs are good, but MarketingVox simply stomps ass on all of them.
