NYPL Gets Wi-Fi Fever, With One
Potential Problem

NYPL Gets Wi-Fi Fever, With One
Potential Problem
01/16/2004 11:28 AM
NYPL Offers Free Wi-Fi

"Free Wi-Fi Service at 53 branches of NYPL!!! Suweeeeeet!!" [Library Stuff]

Overall, this is great news, and NYPL has even posted an informational page about this on its web site (including a list of the specific locations).

While it's great to see NYPL run with this, I'm worried that there is one little caveat:

"The Wi-Fi service is funded through the Federal Universal Service Discount program."

That's the scientific term for "filtered internet access," and technically it should mean that your access will be filtered by default if you take advantage of NYPL's service. What's more disconcerting is that the page explaining Wi-Fi -- that even offers troubleshooting help and lists limitations and disclaimers -- doesn't note this anywhere on it. Even worse, CIPA requires the Library be able to turn off the filter when requested by an adult, and NYPL's page doesn't note that you can request this. So if this is true, I guess that's actually a pretty big caveat.

Thanks again, CIPA!

Can't yah feel the vibe?

That's the sound of a 100,000 rushing into the next big thing - Yahoo 360. Over the coming days people's impressions will be revealed on this hybird social network/blogging tool.

Just to be clear. This is what I call a DLA (digital lifestyle aggregator.) No they didn't get completely right- but it does successfully combine these two latest technology aspects - which each have been hailed as new 'spaces' (marketplaces, trends, what have you.)

But to me - they both were destined to be together. I can remember insinuating that to Joi, Barak and Anil and getting blank stares. I sure hope they realize NOW that all software is about people - and just proving a dinky old "about me" page - ain't gonna cut it.

It's great that SixApart gave LJ a new home - but EVERY 6A product has to have the notion of realtionships, personae, meta-data, messages, groups, the commons, etc. But that woudl come AFTER they provide basic WYSIWYG editing.

But it's not like Yahoo 360 has WYSIWYG - either.

So who's gonna do all things for all customers?

Another thing Yahoo 360 has really blown it on - is Groups. I guess sinec they had something called Groups - they thought they were done. WRONG!
Take a look at what Tribe.net calls a Group. They call it - a Tribe.

It's key - and Yahoo 360 ain't got that. But they will.

They'll also eventually merge it with MyYahoo.

TrustWatch - Website Verification Service
http://www.trustwatch.com/

TrustWatch is a web site rating system that gives Internet users information on the security and trustworthiness of domains and web sites. Before you exchange sensitive information, such as a providing a credit card number, personal identification information or other confidential data, TrustWatch allows you to check that the site has been verified by a trusted third party and is using appropriate safeguarding measures. TrustWatch is a free, publicly-available utility that checks several sources and then reports back to the user a verification rating for that domain or web site. Based on a variety of factors, TrustWatch reports a rating very much like a credit bureau reports an individual's credit score. TrustWatch has been developed by GeoTrust, a leader in identity and trust services, and the world's second largest Certification Authority. GeoTrust's business is helping individuals and organizations obtain trusted digital identities - whether that's for a person, device or an application. This has been added to eCommerce Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Revocing email signature

Revocing email signature 07/01/2002 01:38 PM
Jon Udell was experimenting with certificate revocation in Outlook and Mozilla mail clients: "Last night, as an experiment, I revoked one of my Thawte Freemail certificates. Today I sent myself a message signed with that now-bogus cert. Few people have ever used an S/MIME cert. Still fewer, I am sure, have explored how email software deals with a CRL (certificate revocation list)." I, for one, have tried to use signing certificate in Outlook, and have found one serious drawback. If the email recipient does not have root certificate installed, he cannot get to read the email, even though the email itslef is not encrypted. After couple of responses from annoyed pals I decided not to use it. Reading this post, I have noticed several intersting links in Jon's Googlebox. One was a nice backgrounder on certificate revocation, CRLs and OCSP from Network Computing. Another one was about cert revocation in apache&mod_ssl. This attracted my attention, because some time ago I needed to do some research into the use of personal certificates with the webserver and then I was told by a person supposedly in the know that there were some issues with CRLs. So now I know that it does work.

Application Signature Builder 1.0

Application Signature Builder 1.0 11/18/2003 12:14 AM
The Application Signature Builder (ASB) tool is used by software vendors and IT professionals to generate a Signature File containing file attribute information that allows Microsoft to discretely identify the program (executable) files added to a Microsoft® Windows® -based system when a particular version of a software application is installed. This information provides Microsoft the ability to programmatically identify discrete variations of an application across multiple versions, which in turn enables Microsoft to deliver dynamic information to Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) regarding issues encountered on Microsoft Windows platforms and to provide dynamic resolutions to Windows users, for known application issues on Microsoft Windows.
