LugRadio
03/06/2004 02:01 AMLugRadio rocks. It's a
collaboration between Jono
Bacon, Stuart Langridge,
Stephen Parkes and Matthew Revell, all members of the
Wolverhampton Linux User
Group. They've just released their second episode after over 1,000
people downloaded the first one. It's witty, laid back, saracastic and
quintessentially English - in fact just listening to some genuine
British banter is enough to make me a little homesick. Thoroughly
recommended.

LugRadio Live
03/14/2005 05:27 PMThe guys over at LugRadio (nice new site, see Stuart's blog for gnarly implementation
details) have announced the details of their long hinted-at Linux
event, LugRadio Live.
I'm pretty excited about it; word on the grape vine is that they're
booking some really cool speakers, but they're completely committed to
keeping a grassroots feel to things. The 15 minute lightning talks
should be a lot of fun (I've tentatively offered one on Firefox
extensions) and it sounds like the atmosphere will reflect that of the
show - irreverent, fun and with a trip to the pub afterwards.
The date for your diary is Saturday the 25th of
June, which conveniently coincides with the end of my finals.
I can't wait.

about cell phone blogging and they mention WaveMarket - the
company that Russell Beattie works for.
I really dig this company. Their WaveBlog
product is just part of their offering, which also includes
WaveSpotter and WaveAlert. Though I'd certainly like to see all trhee
of these products in an integrated experience - I'm sure Russ will
make sure these products - rock.
One thing I hope they get right is
integrating cleanly with a PC experience. I just hate it when cell
phoen folks try to "go it alone". There shoudl be a clean dance
between phone, PC and back - just like doing the Tango.

Since When Is It Illegal To Just Mention

Since When Is It Illegal To Just Mention
A Trademark Online?
01/05/2005 05:51 AMThere are some strange things happening with trademark law, and it
certainly seems to go beyond the scope of what it's intended to cover.
The point of trademark law is to prevent someone from passing off
their goods as someone else's. It's to avoid confusion. A trademark
shouldn't be considered something that you have absolute control over
-- but just in situations where confusion can occur. However, that's
not at all how it's being used. Instead, it's being used to stifle
any kind of comment that someone doesn't like. About a year ago, we
wrote about the somewhat bizarre case where the Greater Toronto
Airport Authority told a silly site that posts photos of urinals
(pretty much just for the hell of it) that
they
couldn't mention the name of the airport for no clear reason other
than that the GTAA didn't like it. The owners of that site,
Urinal.net, have now been approached again by someone who is trying to
stop them from posting perfectly legitimate information. In this
case, complaint is coming from the Marco Beach Ocean Resort, who is
claiming that it's somehow illegal to use their name on the website.
Urinal.net has responded by (amusingly)
distortin
g the name enough to try to get around the request of the lawyers
who contacted them. Part of the complaint seems to concern the fact
that the anonymous contributor mentioned that the urinal is viewable
from the lobby. Of course, courts have ruled that simply
passing
on content sent to you via the web or by email does not make the
person or company passing on the info liable for its content. So, if
the resort believes that this information is false, then it's not the
fault of Urinal.net, but the person who sent it in to them. I asked
the maintainers of the site if I could see a copy of the cease &
desist, but apparently the lawyers claim that the cease & desist is
copyrighted to them and that the recipient is
not allowed to
forward it to anyone. I wonder if that means they can't even
forward it to a lawyer? So, as far as I can tell, the Marco Beach
Ocean Resort seems to think that (a) they absolutely own all rights to
the name beyond what the law intends (b) they can blame the most
easily accessible party, rather than those who are actually
responsible and (c) any cease and desist is to be some sort of
"secret" cease & desist that can never be shown to anyone, which seems
to go a bit beyond what rights copyright gives them. How long is it
going to take before lawyers realize that the simple act of trying to
repress something they don't like online is likely to make it so that
something that most people would
never, ever see (like a photo
of a urinal in some random beach resort) is now seen by many more
people? Let's call it the
Streisa
nd Effect.

The Quest for ASP.NET Scalability
The Quest for ASP.NET Scalability
05/31/2004 11:39 PMAt the height of the dot-com boom in the mid-1990's, many companies
burst onto the scene as Application Services Providers (ASPs) hoping
to capitalize on the wave of Internet success stories, and rake in
some loot. Aside from the unfortunate market collapse that followed,
ASPs had other issues to deal with such as training staff to
effectively build and manage a secure, reliable and highly available
operation. Today, Web-enabling architecture is prevalent, particularly
since Web services have become a staple for most applications, and the
growing pains of ASPs past are feeding businesses everywhere with a
hunger for successful implementations for 24x7 applications. As
Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) themes spread across
organizations, applications are now reaching wider audiences than ever
before. Gone are the days where you can sling some code, ship product,
and cross your fingers.

MSDN: The Quest for ASP.NET Scalability
05/26/2004 01:49 PMA little bit of cross-pollenization never hurt anyone. There's a lot
to be learnt from .NET:
At the height of the dot-com boom in the mid-1990's, many companies
burst onto the scene as Application Services Providers (ASPs) hoping
to capitalize on the wave of Internet success stories, and rake in
some loot. Aside from the unfortunate market collapse that followed,

Today, Web-enabling architecture is prevalent, particularly since Web

Architectures (SOA) themes spread across organizations, applications
are now reaching wider audiences than ever before. Gone are the days
where you can sling some code, ship product, and cross your fingers.
The key points that i see addressed in this article:
- You need to be able to handle long-running jobs, and you can do
that by storing the job in a queue to be handled later by a background
process. In the PHP world, this can be implemented by storing a queue
of jobs in a database table or shared memory. Then you have a
background process monitoring this table for new jobs to run.
- Distributed processing to spread the load. COM+ is discussed. In
PHP, we could use XML-RPC or SOAP to work with a set of distributed
servers.
- And when you have distributed processing, you might need to
synchronize distributed transactions. This is something that's
difficult to implement in PHP, and it is probably best to structure
your design to allow only a single master software to perform data
synchronization, instead of allowing multiple masters.
For example, in the typical PHP-distributed MySQL scenario, you would
have one single master database which you write to, and multiple
read-only slave databases to which the changes are replicated to.
