Is A Google Background Check So Odd?

Is A Google Background Check So Odd? 04/12/2004 03:27 PM
Earlier this year we spoke about how the old "references available upon request" line at the end of resumes was incredi bly out-dated in an age when most references are available by Google. It appears that not everyone has received that memo. Over at E-Media Tidbits, they're surprised that a newspaper needed a reader's suggestion to Google the backgrounds of three candidates for the local school superintendent job.

Now You Need A Background Check For Your
Online Date
04/19/2004 10:59 PM
It seems that with the popularity of online dating, a variety of new companies are springing up around the space to offer value-added services in conjunction with online dating services. The most popular seems to be the standard background check to make sure that the person you're about to meet isn't 10 years older than they claim, isn't married, or isn't wanted in multiple states. There are also "authentication" programs that will verify the data about an individual for a price -and they can post that info to their dating profile. One company that does such authentication doubles as a photo studio where they promise to take nice photos of you for the dating site (and will put in a note saying exactly when the photo was taken, so you know it's not from decades past). It's always interesting to see outside companies spring up around successful businesses, and now the question is whether or not any of the dating sites will simply start to offer their own such services (or buy some of these outside providers).

As the various internet job sites try to differentiate themselves from each other, HotJobs has now added a feature to let users do a background check on themselves. You assume that someone will know if they're lying on their resume, but the point is (similar to doing a credit check on yourself) to get an idea of what potential employers will see on your background check, and making sure that everything is accurate (or, to make sure that your little untruths aren't revealed).

Google Background Check On Date Catches

Google Background Check On Date Catches
Fugitive
01/29/2004 02:49 AM
Thanks to John for submitting this story about just how useful it might be to Google your dates. Of course, this has been known for years. It's been more than three years since we first posted stories about Googl ing dates as a poor man's background check. While, for most people, it's just an amusing and quick way to find out a little more about the person you're meeting up with, sometimes you can turn up quite a bit. In this case, a quick Googling turned up the fact that the guy a woman was about to meet was a wanted fugitive who had eluded authorities for over a year. Once again, it appears that Google really is your permanent record. Of course, you have to wonder... if you're a fugitive with the FBI trying to track you down, why are you going to use your real name on a date?

Retail Stores Trying Software Kiosks...
Again

Retail Stores Trying Software Kiosks...
Again
12/16/2003 04:14 PM
About five years ago, I was involved in a project looking at software kiosks for retail stores. The idea was that a shopper could walk up to the kiosk, select from a bunch of software titles, and the machine would pop out a receipt. Meanwhile, a second machine in the back of the store would get to work burning a CD and related artwork (and, potentially, manuals). This way, the thinking went, any software store (or, really, any store) could hold millions of software titles. However, the more I looked into it, the less exciting the idea became. First, it was just a few years before that the music industry had tried the same sort of thing - putting such kiosks in retail shops. Those kiosk had proven to be a huge failure. They broke down constantly - as publicly pounded machines are known to do. The maintenance fees were ridiculous. They also tied up customers. Depending on how many of these (somewhat expensive) kiosks you had, only one customer could use them at a time - and the process of finding the software you want is time consuming. If they want to sit at a machine and buy some software, they'll do it online at home. So, it's a bit surprising to read this article in USA Today talking about just such a software kiosk at CompUSA and suggesting that it will change the way software is sold. If anything, conditions for these sorts of machines have gotten much worse since when I was looking at them. The software retail business is much less appealing. Fewer and fewer people buy boxed software products. Computers come with much of what you need and you can download most everything else. In the few instances where boxed software is needed, many people just order online to have it shipped. The fact is that there are only a very few boxed software products that sell - so the number of items that will actually sell from such a kiosk are fairly limited - and won't have very much margin. Furthermore, the trend is clear that an increasing number of software applications are moving online to be web-based applications, rather than local applications. I honestly had to double check the date on the USA Today article to make sure it wasn't from five or six years ago when lots of people were talking about this same idea. Why they suddenly believe that everyone is going to use such a device is beyond me.

Kyocera isn't the only camera company taking hot fashion tips from Apple's iPod mini. Adesso has a new line of new cameras that seem to match, at least superficially, the green, pink, and blue colors of the mini. However, in an interesting break from Kyocera's form, the Adesso cameras seem to be exceptionally, well, crappy, with the high end model rolling in with a 1.3-megapixel sensor. I guess hoping for an LCD on the back of these is asking too much, huh? I think this is one time when following the 'smaller is better' ethic is probably a misstep.

Even worse? They're not even out. (Thanks, Justin!)
