Longhorn '06 : MS appeasing SA
licensees?

Longhorn '06 : MS appeasing SA
licensees?
09/01/2004 09:45 AM
Gartner Research, a market analysis group, is suggesting that a solid 2006 Longhorn release date is more about re-assuring Microsoft licensees than anything else. Customers who bought into Microsoft's Software Assurance License program (SA) were apparently worried that they wouldn't be getting a good deal if Longhorn was pushed back further than 2006, due to the nature of the licensing program.

Garner also noted that "Microsoft's earlier assertions that Longhorn was not a date-driven release no longer seem accurate." The group also suggested that as well as re-assuring SA customers, Microsoft wanted a earlier release date to shore up revenues.

The compromise to remove WinFS, (not) Longhorn's new file system, to see a '06 release of Longhorn has produced a mixed reaction. Customers, although happy that they'll get more value out of an expensive licensing program with Microsoft, are worried that the new OS's significance will be diminished without WinFS. Microsoft, prior to the WinFS announcement, had be encouraging developers to base future strategies around the system. Garner is recommending that companies introduce XP rather than wait for Longhorn.

Currently, very little seems certain about what will make it into the final Longhorn product. What would now seem more certain is that we’ll see a ’06 (probably late – Q3/4) clientrelease with a '07 server release, with WinFS left out of the initial Longhorn release. One would hope that if Microsoft learn one thing from the release timing debacle, they learn to introduce a bit more clarity into their PR machine. Hype only goes so far.

In addition to expanding the Windows CE Shared Source distribution to more than 2.5 million lines of code, Windows CE 5.0 will also include networking performance improvements that dramatically increase data processing speeds, more than 60 production-quality drivers that increase developer productivity, technology to remotely monitor device performance, and Direct3D® Mobile to enable high-intensity gaming applications. Windows CE 5.0 -- previously code-named "Macallan"-- is scheduled to be released to manufacturing July 9, 2004.

Spirit of Armed VC

Spirit of Armed VC 06/01/2004 06:51 PM

Tim Oren is now an Armed VC with a little help from Marc Danziger, formerly Armed Liberal, whom he met via Winds of Change blog.  Marc has unmasked his identity and joined Spirit of America as its COO to help spread the spirit of America abroad by sending donated supplies to countries like Iraq.

To be honest, I think the effort amounts to dumping sugar into a sea of hate but it's a Good Thing for our spirit at least.  Maybe I am soured by the spread of anti-American sentiments among young Koreans.  I tried to engage them online but they have constructed a strong echo chamber around them to protect their warped viewpoints.

Iraq will be worse even if Iraq becomes a strong ally of America and Iraqis are drowned in everything American for the next 50 years like Korea has been.  Internet?  It's the very substance their echo chamber is made out of.  Still, we need our idealistic delusions like every Miss Universe needs her beauty sleep.

California Prison Guards on Defensive

California Prison Guards on Defensive 06/22/2004 10:48 AM

  • Mercury News (reg req): Guard union in showdown. For more than a decade, California's prison guards have had it their way. Hefty salary increases that outpaced most state workers have made them among the highest-paid prison guards in the country. Favorable overtime rules last year brought the paychecks of 362 officers over $100,000. The guards' union, a generous campaign donor, has been allowed a strong hand in running prisons. But the union's currency, literally and figuratively, has suddenly been devalued. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the state's wealthy, increasingly popular leader, neither wants nor needs the group's contributions. The very strength of the prison guards' union has become a weakness.
  • About time, too. California's prison-industrial complex is one of the reasons the state has gotten into such trouble, fiscal and otherwise. Our prison population grows, in large part due to the idiocy of the War on (Some) Drugs, which treats a medical problem as a criminal one and creates entire new classes of criminals. Meanwhile, our schools continue to wither. Some public policy that is. The guards have a tough job. But they've created a monster of their own, and now they're being held to account. Let's hope the legislative reformers stick to their guns on this one.
