Toothing was a hoax!
Toothing was a hoax!
04/04/2005 11:59 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Earlier today, Jim Hanas, co-creator of
Boring Boring, published a
post on his
blog asking "What ever happened to Toothing?," last year's UK craze
where commuters hooked up random sexual encounters via
Bluetooth-enabled cellphones. (Wired News story
here
. Reuters article
here. BBC
article
here.)
Surprisingly,
Toothy
Toothing, the source for many of those original articles,
responded to
Jim's inquiry. Turns out, Toothy (aka Ste Curran) made the whole thing
up. (Or so he claims!):
All we did was register a forum (which has now been taken
down by the service provider, but we have a backup) and fill it with
fictional posts by fictional Toothing ’sceners. A week later, we
had what appeared to be a vibrant UK Toothing community all ready to
roll, and I sent the link off to Gizmodo, a gadget blog. They reported
it (you can see that first story here,
with a credit at the end to ‘S’, my super-subtle
pseudonym). Everyone else linked to / blogged / ripped off their
story. Things started to roll, and we became a ludicrous, implausible
meme. In turn, that brought Real People to our forum. Others created
forums for their localities - Sweden, Denmark, Italy,
whatever.
A few days later, the print media requests started coming. We kept a
record at the start of where we were mentioned, but there were soon
too many to record in full. There are hundreds of tiny anecdotes,
though. I had to write Penthouse-letters-page style sexual adventure
stories for a full page article and interview in The Telegraph.

Familiar Strangers and Bluetooth
Tracking
05/12/2004 12:42 PMIntel Research looks at tracking people you see all the time, but
don't know, via Bluetooth: Mark Frauenfelder writes about Intel's
Jabberwocky, which explores your relationship with other people,
including what are called familiar strangers: people who you don't
know, but recognize because you see them regularly. The first
instantiation is a Bluetooth application that tracks the Bluetooth IDs
it sees. The more frequently you see certain IDs, the more familiar
the program marks them. When you're surrounded by actual strangers (or
their strange Bluetooth devices), you'll see a different display than
when you're near people you see often but don't know. Once and if
everyone is carrying Bluetooth devices, perhaps you could use this
tool as a way to avoid detection. Private detectives will have to
learn to turn off Bluetooth features to avoid showing up as known
parties. Trying to avoid colleagues at work? As the colored squares
grow in intensity, you zip out a fire door....

12/14/2003 06:26 PMI just ran across the Bullmoose Republican site,
complete with multiple blogs. The strange thing about them is reading
their four
pillars, they don't sound like republicans at all. They don't
sound like democrats either, though their stance makes them sound
centrist to me. I suspect a party like this could gain a lot of
support, but I doubt next November's choices have much in common with
these folks.

Don't talk to strangers, remember what
happened to Sarah Cherry....
08/06/2004 01:33 PM
On July 6th, 1988 Dennis Dechaine of Bowdinham, Maine came home
from work (transporting frozen chickens from a slaughterhouse) and
planned to work on constructing a greenhouse. However, that project
hit a glitch and sometime that afternoon he decided instead to take
some amphetamines and go exploring in the woods near his home. When
he emerged from the woods, lost and looking for his truck, about 8:30
pm that night he was questioned by the police who were looking for a
missing 12 year old girl named Sarah Cherry. Two days later, Sarah's
body was found and Dennis Dechainewas charged with the girl's murder.
He was convicted in March of 1989 to life in prison without parole and
an entire generation of Maine girls were told to 'remember Sarah
Cherry' as a caution to not talk to strangers.
The question before
us now, is, of course,
did
he do it?
