The juiceman cometh 04/19/2004 07:12 PM
There are numerous reasons proffered to drink juice. It's easier to drink a small serving of juice than to eat a large serving of fruits and vegetables; that much is intuitive. An oft-plagiarized article claims that juicing frees nutrients that otherwise could not be absorbed, cites 1940s research that chlorophyll can aid in hemoglobin synthesis, and claims that 1 cup of carrot juice has the nutritional content of 4 cups of chopped carrots (although cranking the numbe rs [pdf] gives an answer closer to 2 cups.) Skeptics argue that much of this talk is hype, correctly noting that juice is not a miracle disease cure as some hucksters claim, and that by juicing you are discarding beneficial fiber. But absurd juicing claims aside, is there any reason needed beyond the great taste? [more inside]

Garbage day in the village

Garbage day in the village 05/29/2004 08:51 PM

iwatogarbage
May 30, or 530. 5 3 can be read "gomi" in Japanese which means garbage. So what does May 30 mean in our village? Garbage 0 day. This morning, I participated with most of the village in picking up trash and junk around the village. Along one of the roads, there was an area that was clearly being used as an illegal garbage dump by many people. There were mufflers, car batteries, toilets, beds, bicycles and even a car dumped there. We spent the morning hoisting this junk out of the mud and carrying it in trucks to a location where the local government would come and collect it for us.

There were many children helping out as well. Hopefully this annual garage day will help educate them not to dump trash by the road.

I got a chance to meet more of my neighbors so it was nice. I still have a hard time remembering everyone's name but sharing this massive chore with the whole village was quite a bonding experience.

The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci

"I want to read the Notebooks, but there are 1,565 pages and I have too much else to read.

At a page a day it would take a little over four years, but be manageable.

Fortunately Project Gutenberg (who make freely available online out-of-copyright books) has created a text version of the Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci. You can download it. It lacks the illustrations of the original, but it's Good Enough.

Using this site, I can read one page a day using my RSS News Reader. Find an RSS News Reader. I started at page 1 on May 30th, 2004. I'm now on page 3. You can either read along with me, or start reading at page 1 today.

Subscribe to one of the following two feeds (copy and paste the URL into your Reader):

¨ Start reading today (starts at page 1): http ://interconnected.org/home/more/davinci/2004-06-01.rss
¨ Read with me (starts at page 3): http ://interconnected.org/home/more/davinci/2004-05-30.rss" [Interconnected, via del.icio.us/tag/rss]

I am thoroughly intrigued by this, and my first thought is how similar this is to what the Chapter-A-Day folks do. Of course, publishers could also offer this service directly to readers, but wouldn't it be great if libraries did? Or if we start providing RSS feeds of new materials from our catalogs, what if we could also provide the first paragraph of each book in the feed?

Public Supported E-Village Fizzles Out

Public Supported E-Village Fizzles Out 12/12/2003 04:35 AM
An interesting look at an attempt to bridge the digital divide four years ago by putting up a housing project that included free computers and internet access. The article suggests that plan certainly hasn't been a huge success. There was a rough start when many people were unwilling to go through the necessary two week training program to get the free PC. Also, now that the program has used up its funding, no one really knows how well it's done. Not a single study has been done to see how (or if!) the people are actually using these free PCs. More telling, though, is the fact that none of the other similar housing projects has offered the same deal.
