According to a Eurkalert news release, a company called Fatronik Technological Centre has built a robot capable of climbing on aircraft fuselages and wings while carrying out precision drilling and riveting operations. Using a series of suction cups, the robot can climb on any material that will support its weight. The robot also includes a vision system for self-orienting itself in the work zone. The company plans on adapting the robot to automated ship building and other construction projects.

AP - It could be called a mechanical miracle — a robot that walks on water. With inspiration from nature and some help from research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a research team led by Carnegie Mellon engineering assistant professor Metin Sitti has built a tiny robot that can walk on water, much like insects known as water skimmers, water skaters, pond skaters or Jesus bugs.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

There is a wealth of information available on the Internet and in separate repositories like university library databases. It would save time to be able to search all digital resources using one interface. Researchers from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China have come up with a distributed information retrieval system that promises to help. The system could eventually become part of the Internet infrastructure as an extension of the domain name service. This has been added to Deep Web Research Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

LG builds "smart washer"

LG builds "smart washer" 09/17/2004 12:40 PM
Every now and then, I come across some news that is just plain odd. This would have to be one of those stories.

If the military can build a missile that can fly through your window and build satellites that can read your license plate... why can't you get a washing machine that helps tell you how best to wash those silk PJs? Well, now you can.

A new washing machine developed by the Dai Nippon Printing Company can read special smart tags on clothing and instruct the user the best method with which to wash the clothes. Not only that, but the LG-built unit can keep track of how many times a particular item has been washed, what material it is made out of, and can even send an email or SMS when your load of laundry is complete.

Just what will they think of next?
(My guess is probably a smart dryer.)

Microsoft builds a better Bit Torrent 06/17/2005 03:18 PM
Researchers at Microsoft's computer science lab in Cambridge have developed a peer-to-peer filesharing system that they say overcomes the scheduling problems associated with existing distribution protocols such as Bit Torrent.

The researchers claim download times are between 20-30 per cent faster, using their network coding approach, than on systems that only code at the server, and between 200 and 300 per cent faster than distributing un-encoded information.
