World Pinhole Day

World Pinhole Day 2004 is Sunday, 25 April this year. The idea is to have people around the world take a pinhole photograph on that day and submit them. I wasn't interested in making one out of an oatmeal box or buying an expensive wooden model but when I noticed that you can buy body caps with a pinhole for your 35mm camera and an exposure guide I've decided to give it a try. Jarkko laughed at the idea of taking an expensive camera and turning it into a cardboard box. Everyone's a critic. :)

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera

We've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright. In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an impact on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset makers to offer multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly) over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will cost lots of money and anger many people.

Yesterday, Dan Bricklin took me camera-shopping at his favorite camera store, Newtonville Camera (in, guess where, Newtonville, MA). My current camera, a Sony DSC-S50 is about 4 years old. It's 2.1 megapixels and only ASA 100. Worse, I've never been impressed by the vividness of the images it takes. So, I'm looking for a camera that I'll use primarily for family photos, almost always for viewing on screen. The immediate spur for the purchase, however, is that I want to be able to take pictures at the Democratic Convention without having to use a flash. So, here are some...

Poppot Pet Camera 07/26/2004 02:18 PM

peppot.jpg imageIt looks extremely hokey, but Matsushita Electric Works has announced a new camera with a motion-sensor that will take pictures of your pet, then email them to your mobile phone so you can keep an eye on them. Called the 'Poppot Camera ATR0202W,' it uses a DDI Pocket CF card for some reason (why couldn't they just integrate the electronics?) And while that's all well and good, I don't know that a 0.1-megapixel camera and motion-sensor is worth $110 dollars, especially when a combination of a webcam and some software could probably do almost the same thing for about one-quarter the price.

But Does Anyone Want A Camera Phone?

But Does Anyone Want A Camera Phone? 05/11/2004 02:20 AM
There seem to be two opinions when it comes to camera phones: either people think they're going to be the greatest thing since the first internet browser or they're a silly waste-of-time trinket that's only going to make mobile phones (that don't work all that well already) more expensive. As with any such situation where there are extreme viewpoints, it often helps to have someone take a bit more of an objective look at what's really happening in the camera phone space. The summary seems to be that they're coming, no matter what. What people aren't quite as sure about is whether or not people want them. In fact, in areas where camera phones are being offered, there's really not much evidence that they're using them all that much. Also, while much of the push for camera phones has focused on how it will help the carriers by driving more wireless data usage, some providers have said they've seen no evidence to support that. Does this mean the whole camera phone concept is set to come crashing down before it's really begun? It's certainly possible. As with so much in the wireless space, the ridiculous level of hype has a tendency to do more damage than help. However, there are a few reasons why camera phones may work out after all. First off, people aren't buying camera phones for the camera. They're buying them for the phone. The camera just comes along with it. As such, handset makers and wireless carriers don't have to be nearly as concerned about the success of camera phones early on. It's almost a "stealth" way of seeding the market (if you can call this stealth). Next, whether or not users think they'll use camera phones isn't so much of an issue compared to whether or not they actually will use camera phones - and that will depend on the applications. People are going to realize that there are an awful lot of connected cameras out there - and that presents an opportunity. It's not the fact that everyone will have a camera in their hands, but the fact that those cameras are connected that will drive people to start creating applications that take advantage of that - whether for productivity, for safety or for fun. It's those applications that will make the camera phone worth while. I doubt that it will happen nearly as fast as most folks in the industry would like, but I certainly don't think it's the fad that some columnists/analysts are predicting will quickly go away.

Hotspot Camera

Hotspot Camera 01/05/2005 06:47 PM
Did Kodak just build 802.1X into a camera? Kodak will release a camera in June that can upload photos via T-Mobile hotspots. The software to enable this uploading isn't due until fall, for some reason. The new Easyshare-One sounds like a combination of Apple iPod Photo, PDA functionality (for wireless and previewing), and digital camera. It comes with a trial for using T-Mobile's service. I'm guessing that this camera's fall software release will leverage the 802.1X authentication that T-Mobile has added to its North American venues. 802.1X is both simple and hard. If Kodak preloads unique accounts, or allows people to set this up through PC or camera back software, there's very little complexity. The 802.1X supplicant in the camera can manage the connection. The camera will retail for $600 plus $100 for the optional Wi-Fi card. Terms of the free trial service and monthly pricing are yet to be determined. It's a direct shot across the bow at cellular operators who are offering poor upload speeds on their high-speed network. Given that T-Mobile has articulated a long delay in their 3G rollout plans and don't want to clog their GPRS networks, this seems like a perfect symbiosis for Kodak and T-Mobile....

The Gigapixel Camera

The Gigapixel Camera 12/17/2004 06:43 PM

Ok, so it is basically a large-format film camera, the image only gets to gigapixel size after the film is developed and scanned, and the thing will probably never see mass production, but Clifford Ross' R1 camera is getting plenty of attention in spite of it's decidedly low-tech construction. And it's worth noting that the people who are sitting up to take notice of this camera are scientists from NASA and spooks from the CIA.

The camera uses a 9 x 12 inch piece of high-definition film — ordinarily used for high-altitude reconnoissance photography — which yields a 2.6GB image file. The file has to be color corrected in Photoshop to clean up color abberations that are characteristic to the film (can you imagine how long it takes to apply a change in a file that big?)

The end result is an image that has about a thousand times more detail than a standard digital photo, which NASA engineers think may be able to help them see problems with the Shuttle's heat shielding without the need for the astronauts to do a manual inspection. And who knows what kind of duties the CIA and military types might cook up for it.

Chad Gets a New Camera

Chad Gets a New Camera 10/29/2003 01:15 AM
I haven't posted many photos in the last month or three. The reason? My old Kodak digital camera gave up the ghost. I researched and researched, and I bought a Canon Powershot A60. I've been using it for about three weeks. The executive summary? An amazing amount of performance for a camera in this price range ($210-$250 as of October 2003). It can do a continuous drive mode which lets you hold the shutter down and take 3 or 4 pictures in a row like a fashion photographer (saying something cheesy like "Make love to the camera, baby" is optional.) The pictures are crisp: many are usable at 100% size. It also has a 3X optical zoom and manual settings like a F-stops, shutter speeds ranging from 1/2000 up to 15 seconds, and exposure compensation, that let you capture what the vast majority of digital cameras costing this much simply couldn't. The only real miss is the software. The picture transfer software uses TWAIN to bring pictures into Photoshop. Excuse me? Like I have time to do that for 100 images? Even worse, the install program crashed twice on my fully patched Windows 2000 computer; and afterward the ZoomBrowser thumbnail program crashed every time I tried to run it. I eventually installed a newer version from the Canon web site, but it ran slowly and didn't tell me anything the File Browser in Photoshop already couldn't. Fortunately, I had bought a Compact Flash reader and am happily using that to transfer pictures. Here are pictures. I took the first with a 15 second exposure and a camera being moved on a tripod. Guesses encouraged as to what I was actually photographing....

Chicago plans advanced surveillance: I don't know what's more amazing — that Chicago is going to have a network of 2,000 cameras monitoring their city streets, or that the ACLU didn't flip their lid about it.

The linchpin in the network — paid for with a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and scheduled to be up by March 2006 — is software designed to detect "suspicious" activity.

For instance, if someone left a suitcase in a stairwell, the software would engage any camera within range and alert a worker at the emergency operations center. It would do the same if an individual rushed up to another and dragged him away. A series of cameras could track fleeing criminals, and 911 operators would be able to give police descriptions of suspects.

DIY Underwater Camera Housing

DIY Underwater Camera Housing 06/21/2004 01:43 PM

underwater_bag.jpg image

This do-it-yourself waterproof camera enclosure is pretty involved, and isn't the sort of thing you'd want to screw up, even a little, but if you're handy with the heat gun and aren't afraid to get your handheld deburring tool with swiveling cutter a little dirty, you can take pretty much any type of camera you'd like into the drink. Of course, if they make an underwater housing for your camera, it would probably just be easier to buy that, and maybe a little more reliable. Also, just for the record, this will work with your pet turtle Sub Captain Sandy, but only for about three minutes or so.

Nokia Remote Camera

Nokia Remote Camera 09/23/2004 07:13 AM

nokia_remote_cam.jpg imageNokia announced an interesting new home security camera that uses any GSM network to send images back to your phone or email if someone trips its motion sensor or if its in-built thermometer exceeds a pre-set threshold. It's a lot like a 1-megapixel cameraphone without the phone part, although it can even take pictures at night with an infrared sensor. For now, though, it looks as if the Nokia Remote Camera will be Europe only, as its dual-band (and priced only in Euros, at around €450). You can also use an existing Series 60 phone to remotely control the camera via SMS. It's great idea - a smart way to utilize the existing networks.

Camera Phone Photos Not So Bad Afterall

Camera Phone Photos Not So Bad Afterall 06/22/2004 04:34 AM
At the top of the list of complaints among reporters and analysts who simply don't get the concept of camera phones is almost always the tired line that "the photo quality sucks." It doesn't take a genius to work out that the technology is improving rapidly, and it won't take long for that complaint to fade away. A new study suggests that day may even be closer than many expected. The study compared photos from camera phones with regular phones and found that, surprisingly, the camera phones could hold their own when it came to photo quality. The study was fairly thorough in testing a variety of situations and cameras in order to come up with a detailed set of results. The end result was that even the low-end camera phones often displayed quality that wasn't too far off from cheap disposable film cameras. However, once they started going to higher end camera phones, the quality quickly surpassed the one-time use cameras, suggesting it won't be long until disposable cameras are a thing of the past as well.

Camera Phone Photos For Location Info?

Camera Phone Photos For Location Info? 04/12/2004 03:44 AM
As the major media and short-sighted analysts continue to trash camera phones for their poor resolution, some people are actually realizing that it's not the camera that makes it interesting, but the fact that the camera is connected. Here's yet another example of some people trying to take advantage of a camera phone for its ability to do something that a regular camera cannot do. Everyone is talking about location-based services, and one of the reasons why many think they're finally set to take off is that most new phones have GPS included as part of the efforts to get E-911 location services in place for emergency phone calls. However, once that GPS is there, lots of people see the ability to do other services. The problem, though, is that GPS has some weaknesses - especially in urban areas. So, some researchers from the UK are working on photo-recognition software that would let someone take a camera phone photo of a building, send it off to a server, and the softwar e on the server would figure out where the person was and even send them back directions to their destination. Of course, this seems like quite a lot of effort, especially considering that GPS is already pretty good and will only get better at filling in where it currently has problems. Still, the researchers claim that the advantage of their system is that it can also tell which direction the person is facing and thus give them clearer directions ("go left" instead of "head west"). Still, is that really worth money to people? Furthermore, it seems like there are two huge hurdles to this system: (a) they need to create and maintain a huge database of up-to-date images of building photos and (b) make sure the software can recognize the buildings taken from different angles and distances in variable lighting and weather conditions. It seems difficult to believe that the combination of the database and the software can be good enough at a reasonable enough cost that it's worthwhile for enough people to actually use the service. So, while this particular application might not go very far, it is still an interesting look at a way to take advantage of what makes a camera phone special.

sonydsct33.jpg imageSony has released a new sleeker version of the CyberShot DSC-T3, called the DSC-T33, in countries that aren't Japan or the United States. Much like the DSC-T11 was the slimmer counterpart to the DSC-T1, the new camera isn't fundamentally different internally than its predecessor—the difference is just the casing. I have no idea why the camera might be available in Korea, for instance, but not other countries, but I'm sure that demand for a svelte, blue camera will encourage someone to start importing it into the US.

Whether a Japanese importer will ship a Japanese product from Korea to sell again in Japan is something I can't speculate on.

dsc-m1.jpg imageOh Sony, when you aren't acting like a blind, lumbering bastard of a company sometimes I almost want to give you a big bear hug. Like when you make something like this new Cybershot DSC-M1 - there's no reason for it, you just decided to get funky, and let the engineers take a long, deep pull off the pipe before starting to design it. It's not the specs that really get me, I guess - it's just a 5.1-megapixel camera that scrounges parts from the DSC-T1 - it's just all the weird features, like the four shutter buttons and dual-microphone stereo sound recording. And the new MPEG4 video implementation (although in truth, I really don't care much about solid-state camcorders, at least not using expensive Memory Sticks).

LivingRoom has the press release and some pictures, while DCResource actually got to play around with one of the cameraphone-looking things and has lots of hands-on impressions and more pictures.
